I got quite a scare when I looked at the Derby cam this morning. I expected the sick one to be gone, but all I saw was one chick sitting up & the dead one laying in the nest (I thought dead, but not necessarily). I was concerned cause one was missing. Well, that other little stinker went back over to the other side of the box, so they're all accounted for!

The sick baby is still alive! I thought I saw mom try to feed him a couple of times yesterday, & at the time I didn't know if chicks could be fed when they weren't standing up. I saw in the video of Scout feeding her second born this morning that even when a baby is flat on its back, it can apparently still eat. In my opinion, this baby wouldn't still be alive if it wasn't receiving any nutrition. This article confirms the surprise that this little one is still alive & what the plans are:

I also have to say that I am really impressed with this mom. She has been giving the sick chick most of her attention for days now. & at this time, she is still brooding it, so I figured even before reading this article that it was still alive.

I was watching when first light broke there & when mom first realized that the chick must be dead. She dragged it to the edge of the nest and picked it up & dropped it several times, I guess trying to revive it. I kept watching hoping to see her remove it from the nest, but when I turned the cam off she was again brooding it. I understand from the Derby blog that she did unfortunately feed it to the other 2. :-(

I got these captures last night, but was too tired to prepare & post them.

Well I sure hope what ever was wrong with the chick doesn't affect the other 2 this would be just terrible to lose anymore

Just so, so, sad...I've tried to keep up with the Derby Blog...I know they petitioned to go and retrieve/rescue the chick, but were denied...Then they were hoping to retrieve the little one at banding, but it doesn't look like they are going to band the chicks this year...scheduling problems...so they re-petitioned the authorites...that's as far as I read...I'm with the rest of you, I do hope whatever the little one died of was not contagious...

I REALLY don't like seeing this--only one chick eating. The other one is on its feet now, but not showing any interest in eating. It may have eaten earlier, but still makes me very nervous because of what has been happening here...

I don't think they were eating because I never did see any prey, but they were both active and walking around afterwards.

this was one of my favorite sites but I just have not had the time this year.

I must say , I am so confused by this intervention thing. I sure hope our biologists would intervene if such happened.
I really thought we were all here for the preservation of the falcons, not to watch them die.
Some say nature, I say that we had better be careful or they will be on the severely at risk again. From dying young to eggs not hatching. Anyone that knows me , knows that I have an optimistic approach to things, but this year , there has been so much happening ,that I think the biologists and powers to be, had better be on alert. And the powers to be , should be putting more in the hands of the biologists. the ones that are in the know, and watching these things, instead of tying their hands..

that they are dying at this young age, I think it is the parasites from pigeons. and who knows what is being left out for the pigeons , to control their numbers, thus going down the food chain.

so I am hoping for these two and hopefully all the chicks can be treated in the early season next year, like at New Jersey. (I think I have that correct)

One didn't seem to be all that interested in the feed.

I don't think so, Bev! I haven't watched this site much lately, since I don't agree with the decisions which have been made at the Derby site.
