Well not having a proper nest didn't help, I'm sure. She may have laid eggs somewhere and they rolled off. Or possibly she was too young. What happens when they are too young anyway, do they just not lay eggs? We'll probably never know.

Thanks for posting that update, ljames. It is such a shame, but hopefully Alcoa has learned something valuable here and will reinstate the nest box next year at the location where it is known to be successful.

Quietly growing up
Posted on 27-10-2010
Apologies for the lack of news in the last few days – we’re back on-board and up
to speed! Our ever-growing charge is beginning to take first steps. A proud moment
for us all! There is plenty of time though lying down which, when colleague Cilla
compared last year’s records, appears to be a little unusual for this specific age,
but nevertheless Solo is eating well, very alert and exploring the eyrie.
Beau was seen carefully pushing Solo away from the ledge the other day, and both
adults are hanging around when needed with the little’n cuddling up close
when possible. Today is Day 23 for Solo. Average time in the eyrie before fledging
appears to be approximately 40 days, and being more than 50 metres directly above
the ground it’s not a step to take lightly (literally!), as we found with one of the males
last year who jumped a day too early and had to be returned (only to jump the very
next day again, this time more or less successfully!).
We’ll load up some news videos in the next couple of hours …

Nothing much happening in here today

The Amazing Disappearing Act
Posted on 28-10-2010

All appears to be going well up the Concrete Hilton but this afternoon some observers noticed what looked liked an empty eyrie. We waited to see if there was any movement, but it looked like a quick trip up the tower to check the roll call as Solo had disappeared for an hour or two.
After some anxious moments, and a gathering of strength for the climb, Beau flew in and within seconds Solo’s fluffy head appeared from the back corner – the hidden corner which we can’t currently pick up on either camera. A search of the eyrie may be undertaken to see if Solo has been hiding a nail file and is secretly breaking out under the camera blind spot. Not to worry – if that chick can scale the steel ladders then The Great Escape would be monumental!

thanks for the updates. Sounds like they really care about their little falcon.

I wonder if there is a platform outside the nest or a beam for Solo to practice on. If not, the first step out will be a big one. But sounds like others have fledge before (more or less) successfully. :mummy:

Just in but the video's don't seem to be loading yet
Some new video clips
Posted on 29-10-2010
A couple of new video clips of Solo and events in the eyrie.
First one is of Solo and some very early upright steps.

A little unsteady still but it’s not far to go over to the far corner near the ledge.
It appears both parents are aware of this new-found adventure and regularly
can be seen monitoring the ledge when Solo is on the move.

The other video clip shows feeding time with a particularly bothersome
main course,

proving tough to provide bite size pieces (not for the squeamish).
Long at 3 minutes but Solo is beginning to have a go at the food now,
although still without the beak strength to make much of
a difference at 22 days old.

More coverage on Prime TV News tonight
Its nice to see Scott now I can put a face to him as he posts

Posted on 29-10-2010
Hayley and the wonderful team at Prime TV News Orange came out today to film a
brief interview outlining our gallant chick Solo and the fund-raising push we’re
undertaking at the moment. We’re currently a small (but enthusiastic!)
voluntary group, running this project with existing equipment and in a limited format.
We’d love to be able to upgrade to better quality cameras, recording & monitoring equipment, and ultimately bring to everyone live web streamed
cameras to a web page for all to see.
All funds we raise, and awareness we create, right now is
going entirely towards these objectives.

The Prime TV News interview can be found here …

The waiting game
Posted on 01-11-2010

After some unsettled weather over the weekend the peregrine family are all on the tower this morning, Swift and Solo in the eyrie, Beau up on the top and everyone’s just… waiting…. much like a surfer does, waiting for the ideal swell, or a good wave to roll in. On a fine, sunny morning (with reports of showers later) it’s a time for a little repose and thought before starting the peregrine work week.
On Day 27 Solo is developing quite an array of wing and tail feathers now and is taking on that awkward “teenager” appearance!

This section has been split up into 3 threads: Alcoa, Orange, and Robyn Hills. Please post in the appropriate thread for November/December! Thanks!
