Holding on for dear life …
Posted on 17-11-2010

It’s night time now and Solo is still in the eyrie on her 43rd day. After all the efforts and calling from both parents, especially Swift, she just wouldn’t leave and it seems her lack of confidence to make that daring first jump is over-riding her desire to get out in to the nearby trees. First thing this morning she looked ready to go but as the day wore on she seemed to lose that enthusiasm.

Solo (left) and Swift (top of tower)

The following video clips show some stern interaction with Swift, Solo appearing to feel quite skittish about her mother staring her down. It didn’t work. First video and second video of Solo and Swift.
We await tomorrow morning ….

Thanks, Mick! I was wondering if Swift was thinking about giving Solo a little nudge when she was standing in the doorway...

Swift does pay close attention to Solo in an endearing way. With only one mouth to feed, it's probably easier on Swift but Solo acts like she would like a sibling to practice with.

Oh my word, that Solo is too funny to watch and Swift right in there with her watching every move. Seemed like Solo didn't want to get blocked in that doorway either, making sure she could still get around Swift to the safety of her box. I love the way she runs up there on that slanted wall too. Well, she will go when she is ready.

Solo sure has a lot of energy. :pumpbounce: It was funny how Swift tried to keep out of her way and tried to get a few scrapes in when she could.

Ferenz, it will be interesting to see if your prediction comes true.

Solo has departed
Posted on 18-11-2010

At around 10.30am this morning (local time) Solo finally took off from the eyrie. We went for a walk around in the trees below, having missed the exact moment (doesn’t that always happen!) but so far no sign of Solo anywhere. The grass below is very long and thick from the winter rains and if Solo has grounded herself then she’s probably staying still while we walk past, so she will be very hard to find.
Swift is maintaining an aerial vigil above us and seems to be more concerned when Cilla ventures into the trees themselves, with plenty of circuit flying and aggravation when sitting in the pine trees or up on the tower. We watched her retrieve a piece of food from the back of the eyrie at one stage and in her right claw finished it off before heading back to the trees.
We left her to it for lunch in the hope that Solo would surface or Beau would return with more food. This would normally have everyone vocal. A watch is being kept by Cilla on the trees this afternoon in the hope that Solo appears above the ground at some stage, but with the last few days of flapping and training up in the box she should be OK.

Another phase of FalconCam Project is now complete but we will continue with any and all news as things happen and will attempt as much video footage as we can outside the eyrie.

 :-?

What? They've got one juvie to watch and nobody saw her fledge and now they can't find her, so they don't know if she's ok or not? Oh my, might as well be in the city somewhere and I thought that location was perfect. If she's on the ground, she probably can't take off again. Well, I'm sure they won't rest until she is located and safe. I will anxiously wait for word too.

Thanks, Ljames! I'm going to want to keep an eye on the site today for news that they found Solo.

No sign of Solo

Posted on 19-11-2010

I spent an hour this morning (with boots on as the area is known for brown snakes…and the weeds are nearly waist high), but saw nothing of our young one. Both parents were keeping a wary eye on me and circling close when I was near ‘their’ roosting tree and lost interest when I was further away. I can only hope that she is very well hidden, but I am concerned as there has been no interaction as far as we can tell.

Thanks Mick, I was just checking the site and saw that. I sure hope this is not a repeat of the situation earlier this year with Cheyenne's little solo chick who vanished on fledge and was never seen or heard from again. I'm hopeing she's in that tree safe and sound and just getting up her courage to go again.

Warrior Princess... I was thinking the same Carly.

The tree seems a good possibility to me gauging the parents behavior when Scott is on the ground.

edited to add; I just remembered, Warrior was seen again near the road at the top of the bridge. Elimac saw her, took a picture and then she was gone.
