Shirley Doell posted video of Hiko & Haya's 18 day old eyasses.

Warning: The beginning of the video has Hiko coming in with a live bird.

There was a feeding a few minutes ago. At first only the two were out of the box, but the other two were soon convinced to come and eat as well. One little chick was trying his best to pull the prey away from Clara and gave her quite a time, so much that she had to pick up the prey and move around a bit.

They are eating again right now too but must be the scraps.

Now that I look back at my own pictures, it could have been EC feeding, but it would be unusual for him to face that crown, now that they can move around so well.

Great to catch up here! Loved seeing the Hiko and Haya nest....very unusual, like the one in Montreal.

The chick on the left tossed up a pellet. The chick on the right came over to have a look. :egg13:

Oh, I forgot that I actually took a picture of it. That 2nd chick is too funny. Very curious about the whole thing.

Someone posted a question on the forum. Basically, they thought San Jose had less food than SF.

Glenn posted some info today:

You are definitely missing some food deliveries... and that is probably a good thing. If anyone is seeing ALL the prey deliveries at both nests, they are just watching too much nest cam!! Anyway, I happen to know the answer to this one because my students are tabulating the frequency and estimated weight of prey deliveries at both nests this year.

First, bear in mind that the SJ nest has four babies and the SF nest has three. Based on that alone, there should be less food going into the SF nest. I looked at two days in each of the last two weeks and here are the results:
April 20th SJ: 750 grams food. April 21 SF: 725 grams food.
April 27th SJ: 530 grams. April 28 SF: 395 grams.

These are estimates that tell us a couple of things. They were eating more ten days ago when their bodies were still growing. Prey delivery is similar at both nests but slightly less in SF because there is one less baby to feed. --glenn@scpbrg

Personally, I thought maybe food was not delivered as often in SJ vs. SF because of prey size. San Jose seems to have a lot of pigeons and maybe some small song birds? SF seems to have smaller birds. I honestly don't know the type of birds that are available in that part of the city. I would think some song birds. I don't think there is much "greenery" in that area.

Also learned from that post about food during growth. I thought the kids would need to continue to eat at the same level, not realizing that they require less food now.

Dinner has arrived. Kids took prey from Clara and were playing keep away from each other. Clara finally got it back, but she's having a hard time keeping it.

Michelle, thanks for posting Glenn's info on feeding for the 2 nests. That is interesting that they need less food now--I would have thought that they needed more. I have heard that adults only need to eat once a day, but that one meal is normally pretty large.

Thanks mwplay for that information.

catwoman, I can remember maybe 3 years ago when we we all watching Alcoa and I was extremely upset and counting the hours and minutes since the last feeding (and posting it too, I might add :egg13: ) thinking they were surely starving to death as we watched, when somebody ( And I think it was Froona) came on and informed us that they needed less food and we would see fewer feedings now that they were bigger so not to worry. Boy, she knew so much.

I thought the parent brought in something. May have dropped it off. The chicks are going beyond the drain now :egg119:

Thanks for the reminder about what Froona said about food, ljames! Yes, it would be a comfort to have her around with things happening at many nests again this year.

Thanks for the reports & pictures, ladies!
