Sorry to hear that Ethel. We were fortunate to miss the real bad winds. It has been a wet time here lately. Glad you are back on line.

* * *I had a customer telling me about a picture at Mt.Cuba Center. It was a Praying Mantis with a Hummer in it's clutches. Can't imagine how that could happen. Oh, the ways of Nature.

Robert Sargent says at pages 62-63 of his book "Ruby-throated Hummingbird" that "perhaps the most common ruby-throat predator is the praying mantis"; that orb-weaving spiders sometimes catch and eat them; that "toads and frogs are formidable hummingbird predators"; that cats catch them and sharpies and kestrels do too. I wouldn't put it past CJ either but if he does he gobbles them whole, leaving no evidence.

New mourning dove feathers on the sidewalk this morning plus a passerine feather that I didn't recognize from before the last rain.

One of the adult falcons was perched on the box ledge at 2:30 pm EDT, looking northeast across the city and river.

Oh, by the way, don't hang your hummingbird feeders next to vegetation where mantises can hide.

Greg, thank you for that article. Isn't that interesting, but sad too. Everything has a predator. The way of this world! Thanks so much for posting that. We have two Mantis's at the shop. I talk to them!! Crazy you know! I talk to the birds in the yard too and I know the neighbors will call the "guy's with the white coats some time"!! LOL

Thanks for eyes on report on the Falcon's and feathers.

They must be out and about this stormy morning. Heavy storms again. No wind though!

Well, last night or should I say early after midnight we had the worst storm that I can remember in years. The lightning continued for an hour and a half , never stopping, with terrible thunder. The ground shook once. Then the rain was another issue. Kept thinking about the wild life as our cats went nuts. Earlier we had bad storms with nickle sized hail. What is going on with all the energy being dispelled?
Hope that doesn't happen again for a long time to come. Have a good day!

DARN, WAS HOPING THEY WOULD GO IN THE BOX, BUT I THINK THEY ARE GONE NOW. IT'S GETTING DARK ANYWAYS.

HAS ANYONE EVER GONE DOWNTOWN AT NIGHT TO SEE WHERE THEIR ROOSTING SPOT IS? I'M GUESSING A LEDGE ON THE BUILDING? OR IS IT SOMEWHERE ELSE?

This morning, there is that dark spot, in the scrape that I have seen before. Just the way the light hits I guess. ( Almost looks like an egg.) Will have to go to into the City today. Will look around!

I've checked in two times today, and the cam was working both times. No falcons in view, though.

Did any of you feel the quake in Virginia? I had a tremor last a good 15 seconds up here west of NYC, still pretty freaked out (I've never felt anything like that before). Was just sitting in a chair watching tv, suddenly felt like everything was moving...not alot, but very noticable. I stood up and then saw a stack of books on my computer desk actually swaying!!! I've got goosebumps....

It hit here in Wilmington and adjoining Pennslyvania at about 1:52 pm. Harder in DC. Apparently 6.0 on Richter scale with epicenter near Mineral, Virginia.
