8/22/2011 update on Haya & Marina (Hiko's mate & offspring):

Peregrine falcon update: This past week was a very big week for both Haya and Marina. We are very happy to report that after spending two weeks in a large outdoor aviary, Marina's flight improved to the point where she could be transferred to a falconer. The falconer will continue her rehabilitation and will work with her to help rebuild her strength and flight abilities.

Hospital staff radiographed Haya again last week and we are pleased to see that the infection in her wing had healed. Her wing wrap was removed and she was finally able to stretch both her wings in a small aviary. After one week, hospital staff took her to our large aviary to see if she could fly. After looking around for several minutes, Haya cautiously flew across the length of the aviary! It has been almost two and a half months since she was last able to fly. We put her back in her small aviary so she can continue to stretch without overworking her newly-healed wing. Though both birds made great leaps forward in their rehabilitation, they still have a long way to go. We are all hopeful for their recovery and we thank everyone for your continued support.

That is very good news. Thanks for the update. Our little Legs from New Jersey is with a licensed falconer should be almost flying by now. Falconers let the birds fly and I think they provide very good care.

For those who want to follow the progress of Marina, Glenn Stewart is the "falconer" who will be rehabilitating her and testing her fitness for release. He has set up a blog where you can read more about the techniques used to prepare for release.

I am thoroughly enjoying Glenn's updates on Marina and Delta. Amazing how they go about rehabilitating a falcon for release.

Thanks for posting these updates.

A new concern for Marina, posted 9/10. Excerpt with a link to the page.

"She was six or eight feet off the ground so more or less at eye level. I grimaced and clenched my fists. As she pumped her wings, her right wing was flat in the down stroke but her left wingtip turned up with each beat of her wing. Either I have never been in a position to notice this previously, or it just started happening.

Clearly, the left wing works and she is able to achieve level flight–its just not working well enough to achieve more than level flight. But her flight was painful for me to watch and thinking that she might be in pain, I produced the quail on my glove and made in to her where she stood on the fencepost."

(such an excellent blog!)

Good news about Marina

I wonder how Haya is. I do not believe there has been any news on her condition. I hope she's still improving.

Falconers would always be my first choice to rehabilitate the birds.

this is looking good and it looks like they have figured out a way to strengthen the muscle.
