Nebraska update kind of
Photos here
The chick stands alone.

Without siblings to egg him on, the Capitol's peregrine falcon chick does a little squawking and half-hearted attempts at nipping as Nebraska Game and Parks' Joel Jorgensen puts a couple of identifier bands on his legs.

Then raptor specialists step in to check his health.

The as-yet-unnamed chick is about 20 days old and weighs less than a pound. The adult flight feathers are emerging and body feathers are just beginning to poke through his fluffy down. His smaller feet indicate he is male, although that's more or less an educated guess.

The peregrine parents had three eggs this spring and two chicks hatched. But only one remains in the nest. That one didn't make it is not unusual, said Jorgensen, the nongame bird program manager.

"They're on the razor's edge of survival," he said.

People like Hollywood plots with happy endings, he acknowledged. But the truth is, of the six chicks banded this week -- five in Omaha -- two will be lucky to reach their first birthdays.

Once they leave the nest and the protection of their parents, the world is hard and cruel, he said.

That's why two Capitol peregrines -- now adults but hatched in 2007 and 2009 -- that showed up in Topeka to take over a nest there and hatch chicks is a minor marvel. And that two of their three chicks are still thriving is a tribute to the two inexperienced parents.

Peregrines primarily eat smaller birds. And to fend for themselves, said Nebraska falconer Mark Churchill, things have to come together rather perfectly. They must have great vision, great skills and at least good luck. No injuries or illness.

Nebraska is not the ideal stomping ground for peregrines, who usually nest on high cliffs and in a wetter environoment, Churchill said.

That this lone chick does not now have siblings is both an advantage and disadvantage, he said. He won't have to share food with other chicks, but his development won't be quite as good without siblings with which to play, learn and practice.

In another three weeks, he could be ready to fly. It will take 12 weeks to become at least moderately adept at capturing his own food.

But first he needs a name.

The Game and Parks Commission is calling for submissions of names for the chick, either at the first-floor Capitol kiosk or online. Your suggestion can be emailed to npgc.nongamebird.temp@nebraska.gov.

Entries will be accepted until June 28 and the winning name announced July 1.

Waukegan--through the dirty lens, it looks like the chick is on the ledge.

Thanks for posting the article, KF....and I have just heard back from Joel...here's his response:

We don’t know. The one chick’s demise may be storm related, but again, we just don’t know. The remaining bird is healthy.

It is very sad that one of the chicks has been lost; this has happened at so many nests this year. I hope the other little one will stay safe.

I found my pictures. My spelling was so bad :suntalk: :suntalk: :suncon: that I could not find them.
So I am really going to ry harder with the spelling.

We had a chick at a site in Edmonton that gone blown off box and was run over in parking lot.It is not uncommon for them to get hypothermia, either .

I have been seeing that one chick at Lincoln for some time now, but can't saw how long for sure. I do have a picture dated 6/2 that clearly shows only one chick.
