Peregrine falcon spotted in downtown Fargo
Published March 18, 2011, 01:39 PM
By: Dave Olson,

FARGO – For some, the arrival of a robin is a sure sign of spring.

For others, it’s a peregrine falcon sighting.

This week, at least one perennial visitor has apparently returned to the Fargo-Moorhead area.

Miracle, a female peregrine falcon who has nested outside the 12th floor of the Bank of the West building in downtown Fargo for several years, has again been seen downtown.

Or at least Wickham Corwin thinks it’s Miracle.

Until the local bird watcher is able to get a good look at the band on the bird’s leg, Corwin won’t be sure.

If it is Miracle, there is so far no sign of her past mating partner, Dakota Ace, a male peregrine who has been visiting the Fargo area since 2000.

But, Corwin added, it is not unusual for Dakota Ace to show up later than Miracle each spring.

I was just thinking about the Fargo cam yesterday & in fact checked to see if it was up yet. If I remember right, there were working on making it less of a hassle to get this cam.

I check a couple times a day also, I hope it is easier to get to this year.

And here we go again

Oh my, these deadly predators!

By: Rodney Nelson, Fargo

JoAnn Coon’s letter (“Peregrine falcons vicious predators that do not belong in city limits,” Forum, March 27) was of interest to the bird-watcher.

I knew the Peregrine to be a predator, not that it was “vicious.” Maybe she saw a falcon do some “top dog” – like strutting over a canine kill.

It’s alarming to hear that Peregrines have become such a threat to residential neighborhoods that people no longer dare leave small dogs and infants in their own backyards.

What action Coon wants the city to take is unclear. Dispatching Fargo Police Department marksmen to take the birds out might be seen as too predaceous.

Slowly adding a toxic supplement to the diets of every pigeon, Chihuahua and human newborn in town would probably work, but it would take awhile and have odd ramifications.

The city could contract the services of a licensed bird whisperer with a degree in avian counseling to do cognitive therapy to extinguish the falcons’ vicious behavior or, that failing, have their owner remove his or her pets to a remote nonurban hedge or thicket site where they’d nest and get off their current regimen.

Anyway, I agree that something must be done to rid our skies and backyards of these deadly, antisocial predators.

Does this guy not know that falcons are protected, & anyone trying to harm them could face serious consequences? Where do they get this stuff?

This is the male...what you can't see is the female in the small inserted cam. He leaves the box, apparently loops around, and they enjoy a little canoodling before she goes into the box...
