Update from Mathew...
May 13, 2011 - So actually, no.

Happy Friday the 13th! Things could change and it's anyone's guess what happens when, but at the moment I need to revise the past post and say that there has not been a hatch.

Thanks to overcast weather the camera signal is marginally better, and as a result I'm no longer seeing what previously resembled 5 scattered eggs, what could've been white bodies, and today nothing is moving on the ledge. In fact Mom has been pretty constantly incubating over the past day and a bit.

Based on my handy-dandy falcon scheduling chart, the incubation period of 33-35 days ended on the May 11th, so we're overdue if incubation began when I think it did.

So that's where we're at as of this morning, not sure how many eggs, and pretty sure there's no hatch.

I'm happy that there has been a hatch at the Toronto residential nest.

Dad returned and was on the eggs for a few....then mom called (loudly) and he got up, left, and she came in...

Last year they had a problem with ravens. but that is why they have to be more vigilant.

I will e-mail Gordon before I leave and see if he has heard anything. I am gone at noon so I may not hear anything till I get back .

Thanks Bev....and I hope you have a very restful long weekend!!!

Well, I've only been able to find out this much about Red Deer...Images taken from a video on the main Red Deer webpage..

The first surprise, I had no idea there were 5 eggs...This was recorded on May 15th...

Male comes in...and then starts doing something with one of the eggs..

Male out and female in...you can see the eggshells after she gets back on the egg...

Well, this explains the first lost egg....now to figure out what happened to the other two...

Red Deer

I've been wondering what happened there too - I hadn't managed to catch a glimpse of the eggs until today, and did not expect to see only two.

Thank you, kittenface, for locating that YouTube video.

Personally, I did not see either falcon eating the egg. It looked to me like the one came to relieve the other and during his incubation period, an egg became cracked but he continued to care for it. The other came to relieve and all of a sudden there is an empty shell exposed. Could the shell have cracked and leaked out its contents underneath? And during an egg roll the falcon realizes there is an empty shell and expels it? Oh c.r.a.p., I don't want to think that the shells of 3 of these 5 eggs have become too thin. :tearhair

Gord is going to check out REd Deer . He thinks it may have something to do with the eggs. I let him know before I left on Friday. He does not think it is predators.

Burlington

Unexpected news today from the CPF; Sir Adam Beck is no longer the resident male. The new male is MacKenzie from the Sun Life nest in Etobicoke. I wonder what happened to Sir Adam.

Oh, What a Surprise!

May 24, 2011 - Burlington - Lift Bridge

Sue McCreadie Reports:

Bill and I spent some time at the Bridge this afternoon. All was quiet. Both Mom and Dad had full crops and there was no sign of the little ones. I guess they had been fed and were sleeping. Mom was sitting on the edge of the nest box and Dad was sitting on the old nest ledge. A poor Turkey Vulture flew though and he had no know what hit him. Dad took chase and screaming behind him cleared him right out of town. He returned to the wires and continued to vocalize and look up. Finally I spotted a Red Tailed Hawk passing in the other direction. I could barely see him with the binoculars, but Dad was making sure he kept on going. Dad continued with some maneuvers over and around the bridge. A freighter came in and Dad landed on the top railing of the bridge. I got the scope on him and to my surprise, I found it was no longer Sir Adam Beck (Band Black 01/V) it was McKenzie (Band Black 29/Y) born in 2009 at the Etobicoke – Sun Life Centre. We have no idea when the change took place. We just know that as of August 27, 2010, this little guy was hanging out with an unbanded female at a Hydro Tower/Apartment Building at the end of our street in downtown Burlington. We thought they had just migrated. I guess he only migrated about 3/4 miles south to the Lift Bridge. Wow, we thought we better get a look at the female bands, but today was not to be the day. She was sitting snoozing the whole time we were there.

MacKenzie's bands; photo from the CPF site.
