onday June 27th - 2011 AM report:
The morning started with a flurry of calls, incoming e-mail and photo snap-shots regarding the Toronto Sheraton nest site. Shortly after 10am this morning, both Kate and little Cinnamon left the ledge and took their first flight, sort of.

While Cinnamon had earlier tried his flight skills earlier with disastrous results leaving him downed on the sidewalk at just feet of busy traffic at York and Richmond streets in downtown Toronto, Kate has yet to take her maiden flight and test her wings.

Had it not been for the heroic and dedicated efforts of the caring staff at the Keg Restaurant protecting Cinnamon with a box and literally standing on guard duty until CPF fledge watch volunteers arrived to complete the rescue, it is very likely that he would have been trampled or run over in the swarm of down town traffic.

While the two fledglings remain together on the roof top of 120 Adelaide - (a favourite first landing spot of many of the Sheraton juveniles over the years), this roof top is much lower in elevation compared to the 43 story nest ledge elevation at the Toronto Sheraton.

One of many photos sent in today - (this one from Eileen in New York state) shows both resident adults on the nest ledge checking out the situation just after the two fledged this morning.

go over and read the day before. They were having trouble with the film crews.
but so far so good.

Kate had to be rescued ojn JUne30

Sunshine, Kate, Cinnamon in View
July 01, 2011 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
Linda Woods Reports:
This morning by 11:00 I had all five in view. Two juveniles on the lower east side of 130 Adelaide. One Juvenile on 150 York Street, one adult on the upper 120 Adelaide. Kate was on 150 York, Cinnamon and Sunshine were on the lower east side of 130 Adelaide. Swing stage for 130 Adelaide was lowered just below the upper roof line. Window washers out on the Hilton Hotel

Late this afternoon, again at 6:10 pm Rhea Mae on the upper railing of 120 Adelaide, Kate on 150 York St., Cinnamon on the lower east side of 130 Adelaide. 6:15pm Sunshine made an appearance on the east side of 120 Adelaide and Cinnamon took off and over to the Phoenix building. Kate had moved off the corner of 150 York Street and has moved to the inner south area of the same building sitting next the cooling tower railing of 150 York St.

I left after Cinnamon made his flight over to the Phoenix. Cinnamon is getting around, but haven’t seen him do any long flights as yet. He his taking his time getting around. Kate is taking her time, being a little cautious after her sidewalk adventure.

Observation for Toronto - Sheraton Centre
!!! Kate Rescued, back to the nest safe and sound!
July 01, 2011 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
Linda Woods Reports:

June 30th - 2011
This afternoon Mark Nash received a call from property management south west of the Sheraton Nest site, stating they had large strange bird sitting on the sidewalk outside their building. I was dispatched to investigate. When I arrived, staff had pillioned and taped off the area surrounding the bird. One quick glance and sure enough, it’s a juvenile peregrine falcon. I couldn’t see who it was, this large bird was lying down having enough of the two legged creatures with no feathers staring at her.

The staff were very helpful and provided me with a cloth sheet to pick up the rather healthy female peregrine and secure her in a box until Mark and Marion arrived. Minutes later, Mark and Marion arrived with nets and carrier. No net needed, but she was feisty as Mark picked her up. On examination is was discovered it was Kate from the Sheraton Nest Site, indicated by her blue band and Canadian Wildlife Bands. A small crowd had already gathered from the start were very inquisitive and Mark was more than happy to show Kate to her admirers and explain the history of the peregrines in Ontario and more importantly, the peregrines in the downtown core.

We then took Kate back to the Sheraton, Mark and Marion examined her thoroughly and she had no injuries and she appeared to be well fed. We gave her water and she was good to go back to the nest ledge. Where at 6:50p.m. she is still there, looking out.

Many, many thanks to the staff and office tenants of 180 Wellington St and local tenants of the adjoining buildings. Deep appreciation to the gentlemen and ladies from Avison and Young Property Management Group for going beyond the call and the many phone calls they made to different agencies to ensure this bird was placed in the proper hands. And also, Sandra Celli, of Avison and Young Property Management Group, who has supported the peregrines nest at 18 King S for many years.

Thanks Mark and Marion for fighting gridlock on a holiday weekend in downtown Toronto to come to Kate’s rescue.

What a great group of people who made all the calls and secured the area until Kate could be properly rescued. SO glad to hear she was uninjured and could be returned to the nest ledge. Good job by all! :bow

Yes, if you go back in their pots you will see that film crews were playing a bit of havoc with the fledging.

toronot has a lot of movie buffs there.

From the CPF site today; it's good to know the little guy has been seen.

Cinnamon back on the nest ledge!

Linda Woods Reports:

A quick spot check this morning around 11:30a.m., One adult on the north east corner of the Hilton Hotel, one juvenile on the inner penthouse area of 150 York St. and a quick look on the nest ledge and IT'S CINNAMON! He made his way back on his own! Good to see him, he is a small little male and is still as cute as ever. Did not see the third, probably Sunshine, who I assume is off on her own until dinner.

I'm glad they are going to do a thorough examination on Kate. Thanks for that update.

Kate having to be rescued again, and her being so easy to rescue, I am concerned. This does not sound good. I hope that she will prove to be fine, not sick, and that perhaps she just has a very mild-mannered disposition.

hmmmmmmmmmmm....that is concerning. I do hope you are right, Carly, and that Kate has just been affected by this horrible heat. That could make anybody (bird and human) lethargic. I wonder if they are going to find that she is dehydrated and undernourished...or maybe like you said, Elaine, she's just a laid-back falcon!!!

According to Linda Woods, Sunshine was on the ledge yesterday, so I think your pics are probably of Sunshine.

Pic from the CPF site.
