I thought the other reason the box was moved, though, was because they were doing construction around/on the tower and the falcons were dive bombing the workers...

Well, I'll really be surprised if they even go near that pepto bismal box with the strange "smaller room"...but, I have my fingers crossed..I'm just sorry that didn't reinstall the old box...I feel sure they would have gone back to nest there..

Thanks for the update KF...and everyone who emailed, check your email box. I got one back too..slightly different from yours, KF, but the same message

Let's wait and see - there is a little chance that Havoc & Ava have heard your pledges :hi:

Here's the reply I got:

thank you for your email.

apologies that it has not been answered earlier.

at this stage, there are no plans to locate the nest box back to the water tower.

we have an ongoing relationship with the Victorian Peregrine Project, who continue to advise us of a suitable location for both the peregrine falcons and the safety of personnel.

the website at www.alcoa.com/falcons has been updated today for the beginning of the 2011 season and will be updated weekly from here on in if any news comes to hand.

thank you again for your interest.

Yeah, I got about the same thing in response. I don't think Alcoa is 'falcon friendly' anymore. I bet that Elise nor the Victoria Peregrine Project people are calling the shots here.

I always felt like Elise was truly an advocate for the falcons.

this is the reply I received

dear bev,

thank you for your email.

the nest box was first relocated to the opposite side of the water tower in 2009 in an attempt to prevent swooping/striking incidents.

while the number of incidents involving staff did reduce, it was not considered reduced to an acceptable level.

therefore the nest box was removed from the water tower entirely.

there are no other locations suitable for a nest box around the water tower except for the station itself.

installing a nest box in the vicinity of the water tower or station would not remove the issue of conflict between the falcons and employees.

we are well aware that the nest box on the stand alone pole is not as ideal as the water tower.

however, at Alcoa safety comes first and in the absence of a nest box on the water tower, an alternative needed to be installed to at least attempt to provide something for the falcons as an alternative to the station structure which has proven to be unsuitable for both the falcons (where is all started in 2003) and employees.

has the new nest box worked, probably not. will we reconsider a new location, most likely. but we don’t have a lot of options.

I suggested they contact the biologists involved in Genesse project for some ideas.

I would like to know just what the falcons did that proved so dangerous for the employees. And while we are at it, just what did the employees do. When we are on our peregrine patrol here in Indy, the falcons pretty much ignore us unless we are at the top of one of the parking garages near the juvies. And then the threat is usually a verbal kak kak kak warning. Are the employees climbing the tower during fledgling season? It sounds like it is Alcoa 1, Falcons 0 and it is final....

Just to give us some perspective, here is a picture of where the tower is.

gigi I think you have got the right questions and they have the WRONG answers for how many yrs they didn't complain at all and then when Shelia left thats when everything went to heck in a hand basket.
Great picture thank you for posting it it really shows where the tower is I wonder what clump of trees that pink monstosity (sp?) is. They just seemed to give up when females changed

I am baffled here as they do not have problems at Genesse which is a similar set up.

They worked on the stack the nestbox was on, in the inside and we all saw Pa leave and cack at the opening. They were mindful of the nesting and falcons.

At Edmonton, at Uni, our kids were landing on a building next to Windsor apartments,in the first weeks. Someone kept opening the door on the roof and the adults would do fly bys and cack.

I went over to the administration and asked for the door to be locked for a couple of weeks. there was no problem after that. They were very cooperative

I think in Alcoa ,personnel has probably changed, and they just do not want to deal with any problems. You would think , if they were truly interested in the falcons , they could put up with a little ,for a few weeks. It is usually when kids are ready to fly that adults will dive bomb areas they are flying to. We ask for a few weeks of not going on roof tops etc.
Every year there has to be a reminder.

this is jsut so disheartening.

Thanks for sharing your email response, Bev....So nice to get a quick answer. However, haven't we learned that simply moving a nestbox, doesn't move falcons? They can still nest on the tower if they choose. Then what? If the falcons are around, they will nest and probably in a very bad spot.

I would be curious as to the number of swooping/striking incidents. Of course parents are gonna swoop if they feel their nest/babies are threatened. Maybe there's only been 1 swoop/strike and that was 1 too many. It is very curious that we don't read about similar issues at all the other nests we watch..and there are tons on towers/ledges, etc. So what is it? Is it a matter of education? Maybe there is greater tolerance and understanding of PeFa nests/behavior in the US, Europe, Netherlands, etc. than in Australia.

I hope they take your suggestion to contact Genesee, Bev.!!! Heck..maybe they should talk with Ian or someone at CSU Orange!!!

Alcoa Anglesea Peregrine Falcon Webcam news...

Tuesday September 6, 2011

The new nest box for Havoc and Ava remains vacant. By this time, it is expected that Ava would have found somewhere to settle down to lay her eggs.

Instead, the water tower continues to be the focus for Ava, while Havoc takes up his usual post on the power station beams of the seventh floor as seen in this latest photo of the pair.

That looks like the picture from last yr. she is a beauty also I have wondered about any eggs from last yr.
They said no nesting so I wonder if it'll be this yr and if the eggs will hatch and hopefully they will at least post more than once every couple months
THIS STINKS :furious:
