Fledge watch starts tomorrow. We will do what we can here. From what Bev says, we have not, so far, had a good response for fledge watchers. I think we all need to retire so we have more time available during the day! And these four chicks are fledging in such a tough environment, as all the buildings are close together, plus we often have a helicopter landing on top of one of them, which is right next to the Clinical Sciences Building, where the nestbox is located. We will report back as to how things go with this fledge watch, when we can.

WEll, thanks for all the nice shots of our guys. one is sure getting his nice brown coloring.

Tomorrow we start our fledge watch. I really do not expect a fledge until after Wednesday but you just never know what will happen.

We do not have good numbers of volunteers this year. Elaine and some others will do all they can after work , which we appreciate. But day shifts are very skimpy , so I will have to hold that up. Peter will relieve me after he has done work.

We have hired someone to stay for an hour in morning and an hour in afternoon with our dogs. suppers are all made for 2 weeks, so Peter will not starve :sunno: :sunno:

I know some say, leave it to nature and, if it was nature ,like at Cobb Island, I could accept losses. but when it is buildings etc that they hit , or are run over by a car, it breaks my heart.

This site used to be quiet and safe . Now with LRT running through and the new Heart building right across from nest box, with all its shinny glass, and the helicopter that comes in often and lands on the roof, it is a hazard.

But we can only do what we can and as I said before, my health has to come first.

so I am hoping for success , and I have tried not to get to know these guys too well, .

Rain forecast for next few days also and mosquitoes will be our nightmare.
We will try and get reports to you.

Have a great evening my cam friends. What will be , will be.

Hugs to all who have been here for all of us this season .
Bev

I admire the Edmonton crew as it is so hard when there are only a few of you and trying to cover dawn to dusk shifts. Elaine, you will be tired from a full day of work before going to your "second job," so take care of yourself, too. You all are special for the commitment you make to your falcons! :flowers

Bev, thank you for the update. Good luck with the fledge watch; I wish I were not so far away, and could participate.

Well , I am just home and ready to go out door again. It has been a long day but no fledges, thank God.

thanks to pictures people posted today, it confirmed that I was seeing the yellow band male doing a lot of flapping.

We had rain , rain, and more rain, Peter went early this morning while I got my heart monitor on. Then I went right to site after. Peter had one person with him early ( and then he had to go to work)and I had one person till 1pm and then was by myself. Radisson and dad did quite a few flybys which got the kids riled. They are showing them where they want them to fly to and how to do it. Quite fascinating to watch.
Peter has relieved me and Bob and Carol are there with him. Elaine will be joining them at 7pm. Peter will stay till dark.
the kids had two birds bought to them before I got there and Radisson did one beak to beak feed. Then Radisson delivered another feed at 11:30am. there were no more food drops when I left.

Dad tried to catch a smaller bird right by parkade but it outflew him. I am not sure if he really wanted It or just the exercise.

Will try and post a few shots tomorrow as Peter has camera

And there were 4 in box. I could see them all. Lots of white on 2 of them , but it looks like yellow band has lots of white also.( I edited this becasue I said 3 instead of 4) OOps

WEber
Peter went to banding as I was covering clinical. WE have 3 males there.

they had to remove chicks while satellite workers worked on roof. the rain was blowing into box and adults would not shelter them ,with workers there. So Gord took them down inside where they could stay warm. They were young, but Gord banded today , so as not to disturb them twice. Work had to be done on satellite dishes on roof, today.
Peter took pictures and looked over the roof top for me so I know how much room there is between box and ledge.

Will post some of those pictures later.

Sorry this is so boring but I am bushed.

hope rain stops soon.

Edit:

I came back and reread. what a mess I made of this report.

You must have had a good laugh SGB. I had israeltie instead of satellite and birds outrunning instead of out-flying. Will do better :sunno: :sunno:

Good thinking on Gord's part about keeping the weber kids warm...3 males...WOW....and please thank Gord for getting Genesee back up and running...I don't think it will be long before he fledges....almost all the white fluff is gone!!!

Thanks for your reports, bev. Heart monitor? Were you being literal or figurative?

Take care all you ground watchers!

Clinical Sciences Building:

Four of us at the CSB last night until about 9:45 p.m. The chicks are very crowded in the nestbox, but no sign yet of wanting to leave. Whenever the parents flew by, they lined up like little troopers, expecting food, and screamed like crazy when it was not forthcoming. Mom caught a pigeon about 8:00 p.m., and was taking her time defeathering it, so dad came over and told her to get a move on, and then the feathers really started to fly. She then flew over and dropped the food in the box for the hungry chicks, didn't stick around, and I don't blame her, the box was very crowded, and those chicks just mobbed her. We don't want to see her get bitten by these rowdy kids, as happened in Manitoba. Later, dad put on a aerial show for us, flying around and over us, while mom stayed on the corner of the heart institute. The kids could see her, but it looked like they were not looking for more food, and were settling down for the night.
