from fb Avian Haven by Hornby Eagles

COLO 1108 Wilton
A Common Loon with fishing line wrapped around her beak and her neck was rescued from Wilson Lake in Wilton a couple days ago. A quick x-ray revealed that, fortunately, she had not swallowed a sinker.
We put her under general anesthesia, and Marc was able to cut and remove all of the line. Basic blood work indicated a general debilitated condition so we decided to keep her for a few days of supportive care before she returns to her home. Her mouth was very sore, but she was able to take a few very small fish.
Thanks to the Wilson Lake association and all the volunteers who helped in her rescue, and game warden Dan Christiansen who finally netted her. She seemed to be feeling much better yesterday and was able to accept larger fish. We hope to send her home on Thursday if blood work has improved by then.

Vermont loons and peregrine falcons had good nesting year; bald Eagles nesting was down

MONTPELIER, Vermont — The once-endangered loons had a record year nesting on some of Vermont's lakes and ponds while nesting for bald eagles was down from the previous year , the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife said Wednesday.

Nesting loons produced 65 chicks that survived to leave their nests across the state, biologists said.

Peregrine falcons also had a good breeding season this year. Last month, the state reported an estimated 50 young peregrines left their nests.

"Rare birds such as peregrine falcons and loons are very sensitive to human disturbance while nesting. They nest only in a few specific habitats, so they need to find these in undeveloped places that are away from people," said John Buck, nongame bird project leader for the Fish & Wildlife Department.

Both loons and peregrine falcons were removed from the state's endangered species list in 2005.

But the number of bald eagles that left their nests this year was down to 17 from a modern record of 26 in 2013. Biologists blame the lingering cold weather for the eagle reproductive decline. But a single down year for nesting is not a major concern since success will vary due to changes in weather or food, Buck said.

"We remain optimistic about the future of eagles in Vermont due to the widespread reports we have received of adult eagles throughout the state," he said.

Wink wink
Quote:
Wink wink...that wasn’t a come on but the sound of pink footed geese flying overhead. Richard mentioned in an earlier blog the arrival of the pink feet heralding the coming of autumn. It has become a familiar sight and sound of late as these migrants arrive from Iceland. Yesterday morning Ross, our operations team leader (some of you who have been following for a while may know him as the hands at the osprey nest), shared an incredible encounter he had out on the reserve with migrating geese who were confronted with the daunting prospect of passing over the Cairngorm mountains in low cloud. Ross has kindly put pen to paper to share on the blog what he witnessed.

‘It was a dull, overcast morning, the kind where the low looming grey clouds sulk over Cairngorm and the nearby mountains, underlit by the early morning dawn in a way that reveals little of the shape and complexities of the ground below. However, my attention was drawn, not to the light on the hillside, but to the action above my head.

It is not unusual to see or hear a skein of pink feet flying south overhead at this time of year, with the ‘wink wink’ call adding to noise and experience of a Cairngorms dawn, but these geese were providing a true spectacle. At first, a ‘V’ of around 90 birds came rushing low into a mountain pass called Ryvoan, and below where I was sat, calling. These birds stalled over a rocky feature on a hill called Creag nan Gall and separated into lots of little groups, flying at different heights, calling to, or at, each other, encouraging different ideas. As this was happening, two other skeins came in to join the confusion and soon over 300 pink feet were circling over me and the surrounding hills, unsure of the passage through the cloud shrouded mountains to the south. As I sat there, intrigued with their behaviour, some mini groups attempted various routes to the West and East and were called back to the main pack for further deliberations. After more than an hour, a few small packs circumnavigated the hill Meall a Bhuachaille to the West and didn’t return, giving more geese the confidence to attempt this passage.

As I sat watching the first of the larger skeins cautiously attempt the western route, just over 150m above me, I could hear the wings beat the warming morning air and their calls echoing off the heathery hillside behind me as these birds made their way south to face their next challenge.’.........

In Maine and New Brunswick where I saw several loons. They are so beautiful. No camera, so I just savored the moment.

Woodie Cam is live this am with the first egg of 2015 around 7:00 am - she will be back in two days to lay the 2nd egg.
>>This is the earliest nest we have ever had on Holt Lake - near Smithfield, North Carolina
Woodiecam1 said: and it is a Hooded Merganser. Probably Punky (HM duck from last two years-we named
her because of her top-looking hair do)
Egg is covered...

Hooded Mergansers egg news...
:newegg:

Woodiecam1: Don't forget...Hooded Mergansers lay 1 egg every 2 days.
Incubation starts after all eggs are laid.
Woodiecam1: And she covers the eggs to prevent freezing...
