:7val: Info on California Condors Redwood Queen and Phoenix (The links are not working for me that they provide below about Phoenix, but I have asked about it and no response as yet.):

CONDOR UPDATE- 3/5/21

Hi Viewers,
We are so excited to report that Redwood Queen (190, red tag 90) is nesting with Phoenix (477, white tag 77). We had a sneaking suspicion they may have started nesting last week when we noticed they were not showing up together at the Sanctuary. VWS Biologist, Stephanie Herrera, hiked up there yesterday (3/4/21) to see if Redwood Queen returned to her old nest site. Stephanie called over the radio, "Redwood Queen and Phoenix are here and they are incubating an egg!" The entire crew was beyond elated, we couldn't dream up a better scenario for Redwood Queen. Phoenix had a similar experience to Iniko in that his redwood nest was burned over by a wild fire in 2008 and we thought for sure he had perished. Phoenix's redwood nest was much taller (180 feet) than Iniko's and we could not see in to the cavity from below. We decided the best option was to climb the tree and take a look. Upon arriving to the top of the tree we found Phoenix alive and well, and hence the name "Phoenix", he literally rose from the ashes.

You can watch a video of the climb from 2008- https://youtu.be/dXiVszDf5_o

Learn more about Phoenix- https://www.ventanaws.org/condor477.html

We suspect they laid the egg last week (approx. 2/26/21), so we anticipate the egg to hatch at the end of April (approx. 4/24/21). The natural incubation time for a condor egg is 57-60 days, so give or a take a day or two on that hatch date.

What to expect the next couple months? The pair share in incubation duties and will switch out every couple days or even a couple times per day, there is some variation. They sometimes will leave the egg for brief stints of time (up to 15 mins), so no need to worry.

What happens after hatch? This is when activity really picks up as the pair have to feed the chick almost around the clock. As the chick grows larger, the activity just keeps going up. Condor chicks reach full size at about 6 months in age, which is when they typically fledge from the nest and then spend the next year following mom and dad around learning how to fly and survive in the wild.

The timing worked out well for this because we had just finished our repairs of the Big Sur Sanctuary cam when we learned of the new nest, so it couldn't have been better timing.

This will be a fun for all, so sit back and enjoy the ride!
Thank you!
-VWS Condor Field Team

VWS responded right away and here is the link for the bio on Phoenix, although not current. And I believe I have read that the chick Phoenix raised mentioned here was not actually his. Will have to do research.

https://www.ventanaws.org/condor477.html

And here is the link from 2008 after the fire Phoenix was involved in as a chick:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXiVszDf5_o

It is a was quite a feat as this nest cavity that Phoenix was raised in was 180 feet above the ground. Much higher than Iniko's nest cavity. And they show the climbing crew at the nest cavity with Phoenix!

And I was correct that Phoenix was not the biological father of the chick he raised. Her name was Madelaine #936 and here is her bio:

https://www.ventanaws.org/condor936.html

The link for Redwood Queen and Phoenix's nest is:

:loveheart2: And Redwood Queen is currently on duty. The cam is solar-powered and sometimes will be showing highlights when not working.

And here's info as shown on "Condor Spotter" on Phoenix:

Select "white tag", then 77 or "select all", then 77. For Redwood Queen, select "red tag", then 90 or select all. Look how many siblings she has!

:loveheart2: Phoenix was on egg duty as night fell. The egg is 7 days now. Cali Condor saw a bobcat hunting at the Condor Sanctuary today and did the following video:

:shock It pounced on something at the 2:19 minute, but did not make a catch.

:loveheart2: As best as I could tell, Phoenix remained on egg duty after night fell again tonight. Takes some getting used to that one of the condor parents may remain on egg duty for 2 or more days before switching out with the other parent, but they will leave the egg for a short break/breaks during the day. I know he took at least one break today.

:loveheart2: Phoenix remains on egg duty. He took at least one 2 minute break outside the nest and some stretch breaks inside the nest today. Redwood Queen was last seen on 3/5 at 1:25 pm. He did a look-see before leaving and on return, but she wasn't out there. He's been on duty for over 2 days now, which is normal behavior for them. Screen captures by Gracie Shepard:

Look-see before leaving. (The nest tree is really scorched isn't it. So thankful Iniko survived this fire last August while in this nest. She will be released from the zoo later this year to Big Sur.)

Takeoff!

Egg alone, but he is nearby.

His return.

Look-see after return.

Egg turning.

Back on egg duty.

And the bobcat was on the prowl again to Big Sur today, but 17 condors managed to safely visit the site. Gif by Annabella:

:loveheart2: Another day ends with Phoenix on egg duty. He had a scare or a concern about something that brought him to his feet to have a look-see earlier today and about an hour later took one of his daily breaks. All is well. VWS spoke about the length of time condors share incubation duties between switch outs times again and included what could be the longest range that might be seen. Also, they shared that they received a signal that Redwood Queen was at Pinnacles yesterday. :loveheart:

Ventana Wildlife Soc Mod Keli loves cats • 5 hours ago
As Marcelle pointed out, lots of variation in incubation stints. It's not common to see 7 day stints, but they do happen, 2-4 days is the average.
Redwood Queen was signaled at Pinnacles yesterday so she is likely on the search for food and will then make her way back to the nest any day now.

Gif by JuliaO. This is of the scare or a concern for Phoenix.

Screen capture by Keli loves cats. The bobcat returned again today to Big Sur and this time stopped to show us how gorgeous it is.

:7val: Redwood Queen is back! She returned early this afternoon and took over egg duty. Phoenix had about a 20 minute break earlier in the day, but wasted no time in leaving when he was aware of her return. He headed to the Big Sur sanctuary to get something to eat. And whose food did he keep taking ... none other than that of his stepson Pasquale who hatched in 2018 to Redwood Queen and Kingpin.

Following is more interesting info of this nest from Cali Condor. Some is a repeat of info already posted here, but some has not been and I am going to include it in it's entirety. There is mention of Iniko, Redwood Queen and Kingpins' hatch from 2020 and who survived the Dolan fire in this very nest last August before she was due to fledge in October. She survived the fire, but later fell from the nest after Ninja (a male condor who attempted to overtake this nest) tried to come into the nest and battle her. Redwood Queen went in to protect Iniko and actually all 3 of them tumbled out. Iniko made it to the ground, but later it was noticed she had a limp and was felt to be vulnerable to Ninja and/or as prey to possible ground predators, so she was rescued and taken to the zoo for rehab and to stay for the remainder of the period she normally would have spent with her parents. She will be released this fall at Big Sur along with another 2020 hatchling that was rescued before the Dolan fire could consume the cliff nest she was from. These two have been introduced to each other at the zoo. Kingpin who was the head condor of the Big Sur condors lost his life in this fire.

Normally condors only lay an egg about every 2 years as their chicks fledge about 6 months after hatching, but go on to stay with parents about another year as they are not strong flyers initially and also need to learn the ropes of condor living. The reason Redwood Queen was able to lay an egg this year is because Iniko was removed and so she was no longer caring for him and had lost her longtime mate.

From Cali Condor:

"Male and female condors share incubation duties and usually switch every 1-4 days. It is not uncommon to see 7 day shifts.

After 4 days incubation shifts, Phoenix #477 makes his way to the Big Sur Sanctuary to grab some snacks. He meets Pasquale #914 the son of Redwood Queen (2018 hatch) and Iniko's big brother.

Mom: Redwood Queen #190, hatched in LA zoo, 22y.o.
Dad: Phoenix #477, hatched in Big Sur 2008, 13y.o.

Redwood Queen lost her mate of 14 years, Kingpin #167, in the Dolan Fire of 2020. She paired with Phoenix #477 and laid an egg around 2/26/21. The egg is expected to hatch on or around 4/24/21.
The pair nests in a natural Redwood tree cavity. "The inside of the nest cavity is approximately 4-5 feet wide. The cavity entrance is south-facing and about 60 feet above ground less than a mile from the Pacific ocean. Judging by the size of this one, it could be over 500 years old!"

Video by Cali Condor of Redwood Queens return and the exchange between Phoenix and Pasquale as he keeps deciding he wants what food Pasquale wants. Local cattle ranchers supply the sanctuary with their stillborn calves and the carcass is then chained to the ground by the sanctuary as a supplemental feed source for the condors. They usually shut off the cam while they do this task. They also supply a supplemental water source for them.

:loveheart2: About 5 1/2 hours ago, Redwood Queen left the nest and less than a 1/2 after that, Phoenix comes in and he continues on egg duty this eve.
