Glad to see they have more room. Now maybe they won't trip over each other as much & tip over their dishes! Of course, when they're running around they don't seem to want to go around a sibling who is lying down--they have to go over! :hapdance:

They all look good! :hapdance: Not the best picture, but I think having more than one is better.

One of the ostrichs may be sick. At least it doesn't seem to be feeling well. I thought that earlier today but nobody on the stream was mentioning it. Now they are talking about it & some are telling them to quit being so negative. Skippy (Miss Perfect) seems awfully tired & isn't moving around much. Their towels are pretty dirty too so I hope Dash checks on them soon! :girlsad3:

Well, Dash climbed in the box & has been trying to get Skippy to eat & drink. He may feel that Skippy is dehydrated. Skippy has been drinking water from a dropper & at times going after it quite aggressively. Hopefully he just has a minor tummy ache or something.

Update from facebook page...

Special report
Day 8
October 20, 2013 at 11:00 PM

Skippy was not thriving, she was not eating or drinking, and was lethargic. This afternoon I tried:

Putting drops of water on her beak with an eye dropper
Putting bowls of food in the heat lamp area (which I expanded by getting a second heat lamp) so she would not have to move to get food and water.
Putting food granules on the floor around her
Putting minced lettuce around her
She did not really respond, and so I contacted the avian veterinarian specialist (who I have been updating on these chicks) and she made an emergency night call. (I turned off the camera while she was here).
After assessing Skippy, she decided that tube feedings with recovery fluids were in order, and started her on flagyl antibiotic. She taught me how to do the tube feedings and loaned me her steel feeding tube and other supplies.
I will be doing tube feeding 5 times a day until Skippy is eating and drinking vigorously on her own. I will continue the antibiotics for 7 to 14 days.
Hopefully she will rally and start going strong again. (And I do not know the gender of any of these chicks, I just call them "She")

Day 9 at 5:00 AM
October 21, 2013

Skippy passed away at 4:45 today.
She had her second tube feeding at 2 AM. She was weaker and less responsive, but took the feeding.
She was asleep and her siblings were next to her.

Very sad.... :sorrow: I hope whatever she had was not contagious. I'm sure Dash is just crushed...

Very nice of the vet to make an emergency visit....

Poor little Skippy & poor Dash! I was watching her before I had to get ready for work this morning & she had hiccups, I guess from being tube-fed. Dash rolled up a piece of material & made a pillow for her cause every time she'd hiccup, her head would pop up. The last I saw before I left the computer was one of her siblings laying down next to her & sharing the pillow. I found out she was gone when I took a quick look before leaving for work... RIP Sweeheart! :tissue:

I am not sure where this should go, so let me know if I have chosen incorrectly.

This is the Condor Cam sponsored by the Ventura Wildlife Society in Big Sur California. I will also add this to the CAM page under Misc. Birds Forum

The kids have new outdoor digs, complete with heat lamp, heat mat, & importantly for us, a cam! Dash plans on them being outside most of the day--he's not sure about night, depending upon whether they seem too cold.

Rascal has a deformed leg that Dash is talking to people about, trying to find the best way to correct it. He had athletic tape on it, but Popcorn broke Rascal out of his shackles in a hurry, so there needs to be another plan. Dash is concerned about the leg because it seems to be getting worse.

Such cute ostrich chicks! To change the subject a bit, Cornell has two new bird feeder cams up and running.

In addition to the birds that come to the feeders, you can see ducks swimming in the water below.

What a great birdcam! Does anyone know what kind of bird is on the left in Catbird's first picture? Very pretty! :sum9:

Update on the ostriches: The kids are enjoying their outdoor digs & are growing leaps & bounds! It is kinda hard for me to watch them on the cam right now cause Rascal's leg looks so bad. It apparently doesn't hurt her cause she's running all over the place. Dash made an appointment for Wednesday a.m. to have a vet look at her leg & hopefully come up with some kind of brace for her to wear to correct the problem, so keep your fingers crossed. Dash is so kind--he's taking Popcorn to the vet along with Rascal so they don't get stressed out from being away from each other!

I'd say evening grosbeak.
