Well, Dash had decided he had to help the third hatch. I know he means well, but I know with falcon hatches, the chick will die if its separated from the eggshell at the wrong time, so I'm very nervous about this. On the other hand, these eggs weren't really expected to be "normal" since they were laid at the end of the breeding season. The shell Goofy was in was an odd shape so I understood that he felt the need to help with that one. I just hope they'll all be OK.

He finished helping her out of her shell, then put betadine on her belly button (like he did with the other 2). He said her yolk sac wasn't totally absorbed like it was with the other 2, which makes me think that maybe it wasn't quite time for her to hatch.

Can someone tell me why he keeps helping the chicks? Can't they hatch by themselves? I just don't understand this.

Kitten, the only reason I can think of is that at least supposedly these eggs were end of season eggs that normally don't do very well. The one egg was shaped funny, so I thought maybe that's why he had to help it. From what he said, he thought because the other 2 hatched today & since they were all put under the incubator the same time, he thought the 3rd one should hatch today, too. I don't think it works that way, but I just hope they'll all be OK.

Thanks for the great coverage, everyone...

I've been watching for a while now...I too am confused as to why he assisted, especially with Rascal (#3) and especially reading he wasn't as developed as the other two....I just hope he was getting advice from an expert...Hopefully everything will turn out ok!!!

...and PLEASE I hope he has plans for a much larger container for them...Pip ran around crazy!!!

Thanks, I don't watch to much but I just thought that they should hatch on their own,but like I said I don't watch or know.
Here's hoping things go better this time. Your right SGB there better be more room.

All survived the night, well at least MY night. It is 3:30 a.m. there. I was really concerned about Rascal since the last I saw him before I went to bed, he was having trouble raising his head. Judging by the head markings, he appears to be quite energetic this morning. :leafrock:

Great pics (much better than the ones I have..hee hee)

I did tune in a few minutes ago...somebody was trying to get one of the kids to drink water out of a spoon..While it was very cute to watch, every thing I have read said to REFRAIN FROM FOOD AND WATER for 6-8 days...

from a vet website:

"Refrain from providing food or water until your ostrich chicks are 6 to 8 days old. Ostrich chicks have a great deal of fluid in their tissues that needs to be absorbed so they can stay healthy and develop properly. However, some experts suggest feeding baby ostriches yogurt around day 2 or 3."

This is what drove me crazy with Pip...and I stopped watching...fingers crossed that these triplets will stay healthy!!! They are just precious!!

BTW...according to the "experts" each chick will need 40 square feet a piece once they reach a couple of weeks...this should be interesting... :pumplaugh:

I was concerned when I saw the bowl of water in there because I know SGB had posted earlier that they shouldn't have food or water for many days. I guess the good news is that they don't seem terribly interested in the water they're being offered so they're not getting much. Interesting that Dash seems to think they need water cause I just watched him offering them water & it was only 3 a.m. there, so he must have gotten up in the middle of his night to offer them water. I wonder if the difference has anything to do with the heat lamp. I would think they could dehydrate quickly under the heat lamp. I'm wondering whether that could be the difference between these guys & most ostrich babies. On the other hand, are most ostrich babies raised under heat lamps? I certainly hope all goes well. :flirty:

When you think about where Ostriches live (Africa) their natural habitat is HOT and DRY..so their genetics must gear them toward these arid conditions. If hatchlings were walking around their nest area, they wouldn't see water for days...maybe weeks.

Hopefully Dash is getting regular advice from the Ostrich "farmer" where he got the eggs from...

.they are all snoozing right now...
