Here is video from the fledging of our first little bluebird Sunday night about 8 p.m. You will see mom enters with food in her mouth and then flies out. Baby follows her after a little while.

May 18, 2014: He makes a break for it and climbs out of nest. Don’t worry -- a parent is standing by.

Pauline and Henry both fly to the nest. There is much to say! Very loving parents, one or both are always close by to watch over their youngster.

This is an extremely rare bird in Wales, and the UK now. In fact, they don't even breed at all in Wales anymore.
It's a turtle dove. Photographed yesterday evening by Gil Ratcliffe, just next door to Cors Dyfi by their holiday home on Morben Isaf Holiday Park.
This small dove has a gentle purr - an evocative sound of summers long ago, but has become increasingly rare following rapid and sustained population declines.
It is the only European dove that migrates - they go to the same wintering grounds as our ospreys, western Africa. The turltle dove eats only seeds (posh word - seminivorous) and are very tolerant to heat and other conspecifics.
Happily foraging for seeds in 45°C temperatures, they sometimes gather in massive roosts of up to a million other turtle doves.
Thanks for the photo Gil - that's the 'Bird of the Year' so far, no doubt.

So sad to lose birds. In Hawaii, almost all of the ground nesting birds are extinct, due to the introduction of predators such as rats, snakes, mongoose, cats, dogs. With the loss of habitat, more birds will join the list...

I understand it is 35 - 42 days to fledge. However, I've been observing the length of the flight feathers and fullness of the tail. Compared to those of the parents, both the flight feathers and tail on this young raven are somewhat smaller. As to the wing exercises, his feet aren't leaving the nest. This is an excellent site for research and I have looked at the site every day!

Birds nesting in an underground parkade could have been locked in when the parkade was converted to a campus bike centre with doors on the end. The swallows quickly learned how to trigger the motion detectors to open the doors and go in and out whenever they want. Smart birds!

Very smart birds! We must redefine what we mean when we say "bird brain." :egg8:

Three eggs today in the bluebird nest! Dr. Carleton does not know if the original bluebird couple is nesting again or if it is a new couple. Also, just FYI, Dr. Carleton will be at the eagles' nest on Saturday, mid-morning, in case you are in the area.
