Update on Duckie-Loon...

We continue to prepare the Common Loon, Duckie for his trip to the Gulf of Mexico. He is eating voraciously
( thanks Hilger Baits) and is getting stronger by the minute.

This site is great to read, thanks again Kitten for posting!

Thanks again KF for the latest Duckie update - however, I couldn't quite work out what they are doing with him - it sounds as though they are driving him all day & stopping at a motel somewhere before releasing him - are they trying to get him farther south??? :? They wouldn't be driving him all the way to Mexico would they??? Any feedback appreciated

Common Loon Released In Gulf of Mexico

We have great news today from Pensacola,Florida. "Duckie" was successfully
released on the Gulf Islands National Sea Shores. We will have photos and
a video of the release in a few days.

By all reports however the release was spectacular and could not have
gone better.

The Common Loon from Duck Lake, WI was released about noon on 12-17-09.
He was cautious when he swam into the lagoon adjoining a larger bay.
A Great-blue Heron, Egret, Double-crested Cormorants, and some Brown Pelicans
came into his view as he entered the bay. Suddenly, it was as if he realized he
was not only free, but in a perfect location. He began to dive, feed, flap
and bathe. He never looked back as he quickly moved to a further shore.
He would dive and disappear for 30 seconds or so and then pop back up
and begin bathing and preening all over again. After about fifteen minutes
he called once and then began to swim rapidly towards the open Gulf of Mexico.
Another Common Loon joined him very soon. They were soon joined by at least
one more loon before they went out of view. It was a perfect day and a perfect
ending to a story that began a week ago on a frozen lake in northern WI.

We are all happier tonight including "Duckie". We will never know what was
going in in his mind during this adventure, but knowing he is in the warm waters
of the Gulf of Mexico with other loons for the remainder of the winter is comforting.

Pictures and video clips will be posted soon!

On another note REGI's winter newsletters were mailed out yesterday! Keep a
look out for them in your mailbox.

Thank you so much for sharing that with us Eiguoc - I suppose the best thing to come out of that sad tale is just how many people were obviously also touched by it - so much so that the newspaper sold out - so it gives us hope that more & more people do recognise, & then also respect, the intelligence & integrity of all LIFE.
