Mark Your Calendars!! From the National Zoo.
"Bei Bei Will Make His Public Debut Jan. 16, 2016"
"FONZ Members Will Get an Early Preview Jan. 8-15

Giant panda cub Bei Bei will go on public exhibit for the first time Jan. 16, 2016. In the past three months, he has transformed from a pink hairless cub weighing about 5 ounces to a robust 12.5-pound black-and-white cub capable of crawling and sometimes walking on his own.

The panda team has been monitoring him carefully since his birth Aug. 22. He is larger than both his older siblings Bao Bao and Tai Shan were at the same age. The panda house has been closed since August to give the mother and cub quiet and time to bond. When it reopens, the panda house will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

Members of Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ) will be able to see Bei Bei starting Jan. 8, 2016. FONZ will share more details with members, including through the Member News page on the Zoo's website, in the coming weeks.

Although the panda house will once again receive visitors in the New Year, Mei Xiang and Bei Bei will continue to have access to the den where Bei Bei was born. When they spend time in the den, they will only be visible on the panda cams. On high visitation days, visitors will be allowed into the panda house in small groups."

Another update from the National Zoo.

A Healthy, Growing Bei Bei
This update was written by giant panda biologist Laurie Thompson.

"Bei Bei is a healthy 12.5 pound boy and he's on the move. Although he took his first steps, the rock work provided more traction than the slippery floor, so it will take him a little longer to figure out how to walk on this surface. The other cubs were able to eventually figure it out though so we aren't worried about his progression. When Bei Bei isn't trying to walk, he is often nursing. We aren't monitoring him 24/7 but our best guess is that he nurses 3 to 6 times per day.

Panda cam viewers may hear Bei Bei making many different vocalizations. Like all babies his vocalizations indicate a need for something. Usually he is either hungry, wants his mom, or is just frustrated that his legs aren't getting him where he wants to go. He also may be indicating that he needs to go to the bathroom. A panda mom stimulates her cub to urinate or defecate by licking them. At about four months of age, Bei Bei will be able to perform these tasks without aid.

When he is being held, Bei Bei also makes a happy grunting sound that indicates he feels secure (although you can't quite hear it on the cam). Fun fact: panda cubs may look like giant fluffballs, but panda fur is actually very coarse and dense like wool (especially on their backs and rear ends). Cub fur is much softer but Bei Bei is already getting the coarse fur!

Lastly, Bei Bei does not recognize his individual keepers yet, however he has started to respond to the sound of human voices. Keepers have noticed the cub orienting himself in the direction of the person speaking to him."

Thanks for keeping up with the panda's every one!!

I should have posted this question a while back, but why did they name Bei Bei so soon? They didn't follow the traditional 100 days naming protocol... or did they and I'm thoroughly confused? (probably the latter)

:shockedsanta: Sky the first lady of China was in the United States with her husband ... Peng Liyuan and President Xi Jinping. She and Michelle Obama could not wait til the 100th day and miss this photo op. Soooooooooooooo, they broke the tradition and seized the moment to name him. I did not think China would ever be willing to break a tradition, but they did. :wavingsnowgirl:
