Monday, October 17 It would be fun to have sound!
"Hi everyone! My name is Jen W., and I'm one of the other primary panda keepers. I was a nursery keeper when we had our first set of twins, and am happy to be able to spend some time as a nursery keeper with the new twins (v2.0 as I like to call them). I'm sure we're all sounding like a broken record, but it really is amazing to see how quickly these two nuggets are growing. It's also humorous to watch the little cubs get a little cranky with their mom. Now that they are older, they are starting to be able to regulate their temperatures better. So this means that Lun Lun has started to leave them for longer and longer periods. She's even started to take short "mommy time" breaks in an adjacent den while the cub rest peacefully. At least that's what she wishes the cub would do! Unfortunately they think cuddling with Mom is much better than laying on a comfy hay bed or even the bare floor. So they start grumbling, and heaven forbid if they are on their back and have to flip themselves over! Even though they can do it, they'd rather have Mom do it. But she is starting to let them figure out things on their own now that they're older. So while they eventually flip themselves over, they're quite vocal with regards to their feelings about it! Baby panda grumbles are quite adorable.

This view shows that even when Lun Lun does leave a cub for a short period, she’s often still very close by, even though you may not see her on the cam."

And from the National Zoo...

Bao Bao is Moving to China
Bao Bao is going to move to China next year. She will be leaving the Smithsonian's National Zoo in late winter, within the first few months of 2017. Under our breeding agreement with the China Wildlife Conservation Association (CWCA), all panda cubs born at the Zoo will return to China by the time they turn four years old.

"Bao Bao is very special to us at the Smithsonian's National Zoo," said Brandie Smith, associate director of animal care sciences. "She was the first surviving cub born at the Zoo since 2005. She's captured the hearts of people all over the world who watched her grow up on the panda cams, and she has been an ambassador for conservation. We are sad to see her go, but excited for the contributions she is going to continue to make to the global giant panda population."

We will announce opportunities for the public to celebrate Bao Bao and say goodbye before she departs for China. Stay tuned, we'll have more details soon!

During the next several months, keepers will prepare Bao Bao for the move. They will acclimate her to a travel crate that she will make the trip in. One keeper and one veterinarian will travel with her. They will stay with her for a short time while she settles into her new home at one of the bases run by the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP). When she reaches sexual maturity between 5 and 6 years old, she will enter the breeding program and we hope she will have cubs of her own.

Read more about her upcoming trip. Lots of pics here including this one!

Lucky you! I am watching one of the babies snuggled up to Lun Lun. So adorable and so big I almost thought they were both in with her!

We won't get to watch the Meihem girls for much longer. :5val: If you look carefully, you can see zoo visitors behind the girls. They are now up and about - sort of. One in the hammock and the other above her on the poles.

Three Twins Updates from Zoo Atlanta :5val:

Friday, October 28
This week Lun Lun has started taking the cubs out of the nest box and carrying them into an adjacent den. Lun Lun has done this with all of her previous cubs and the behavior is normal and expected. Wild giant panda mothers would move their infant cubs to different dens frequently to avoid detection from predators. The adjacent den that Lun Lun uses to house the cubs has a narrow end that is roughly the width of her nest box, which makes her feel comfortable and enclosed just like a den. The first few times that she took them into that den, she did not leave them there when she left to eat bamboo, but instead carried the cub back to the nest box and deposited it there. Now, she is leaving the cub in the adjacent den when she goes to eat bamboo. Anytime something new happens, even if Lun Lun initiates it herself, it takes her a few days to adjust and feel comfortable. The cubs are both content in the adjacent den with and without Lun Lun.

The cubs turned 50 days old on Sunday and have reached another big milestone. It is time for the cubs to graduate from their incubators to the playpen box that we used when their older sisters were this age! The playpen is an important next step in the cubs' development and is one step closer to both cubs being with Lun Lun at the same time (which won't happen for a little while longer). The playpen has three tall walls and one removable window and will take the place of the incubators. It will be a safe and secure place, similar to a den, for the cubs while they continue to build their muscles in preparation for scooting and walking.

Monday, October 24
Lun Lun is spending more time away from the cubs now that they are older. She is regularly napping or eating for an hour or more at a time in the adjacent dens or just outside of the nest box. This behavior is a normal progression for Lun Lun as the cubs grow. The cubs are able to stay warm without Lun Lun now that they have a full coat of fur. Lun Lun is never too far away and can always hear the cubs if they vocalize. Just like human babies, if the cubs are hungry or need something, they will cry and Lun Lun is very responsive. Lun Lun is an excellent and highly experienced mother and knows exactly what her cubs need and when they need her. She also knows she needs to eat and rest as much as she can so that she has enough milk and strength to care for both cubs. The cubs are calm and quiet while she is away and spend their time sleeping or doing what I call their "exercises" - stretching, wiggling, rolling over, and using their rear legs to scratch themselves. These movements help their muscles to strengthen so that they will eventually be able to scoot, crawl, and then walk.

Happy Halloween! Although it’s important to not weigh yourself before and after Halloween, we’re constantly weighing the cubs! This photo is a few days old – Cub A (pictured) is now 2,223.8 grams (4.9 lbs.), and Cub B is now 2,186.6 grams (4.82 lbs.)!

More from Zoo Atlanta on the girls' departure.
"A bamboo bon voyage to Mei Lun and Mei Huan
Thursday, November 3, 2016
The first surviving giant panda twins born in the U.S. are en route to China

Mei Lun and Mei Huan, the first surviving pair of giant panda twins ever born in the U.S., are officially on their way to Chengdu, China, for a new home at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. The 3-year-old giant pandas left Atlanta in the early-morning hours of November 3, 2016.

The twins, who are the fourth and fifth Atlanta-born pandas to travel to China, are accompanied by two Zoo Atlanta staff and a considerable amount of panda-particular luggage, including around 375 pounds of bamboo, 8 gallons of water, and 25 pounds of favorite treats, including sugarcane, bananas and giant panda biscuits.

“This is a milestone to be celebrated. While the Zoo Atlanta family and their many fans will miss seeing Mei Lun and Mei Huan in Atlanta, we’re very proud to see two more Atlanta-born giant pandas go to join such an important program,” said Raymond B. King, President and CEO. “It’s a tribute to the success of the Zoo Atlanta giant panda program and to the commitment of our international partners who are helping us save this species.”

Mei Lun and Mei Huan will join one of Zoo Atlanta’s longest and most successful conservation collaborations. Zoo Atlanta has contributed more than $10 million in sustained support for conservation of the species, and eight of the Chinese nature reserves inhabited by wild giant pandas are supported by Zoo Atlanta. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) upgraded the giant panda’s status from “endangered” to “vulnerable” in September 2016, but the species remains heavily reliant on conservation programs. Fewer than 1,900 giant pandas are estimated to remain the wild in China’s Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces, where they face continuing threats from habitat fragmentation and habitat loss as a result of deforestation and other human activities. More than 1,200 of China’s remaining wild giant pandas live inside nature reserves like those supported by the Zoo.

Fans from around the world tuned in for Mei Lun’s and Mei Huan’s final days on the Zoo’s PandaCam, and many traveled to join the pair at Zoo Atlanta on October 30, when the twins enjoyed special travel-themed enrichment surprises, including a giant passport, globes and a “China or Bust” banner celebrating the duo’s milestone transition to a future at the Chengdu Research Base, where their parents, Lun Lun and Yang Yang, were born, and where their older brothers and sister, Mei Lan, Xi Lan and Po, now reside.

Giant pandas are a solitary species and are weaned from their mothers by the time they are around 18 months old. Mei Lun and Mei Huan have been living apart from their mother since February 2015 and at 3 years old, are ready for this next step in terms of both their age and behavior.

Lun Lun’s and Yang Yang’s youngest offspring, a new set of female twins born September 3, 2013, will follow in their older siblings’ footsteps as they begin to achieve many important milestones of their own. The 2-month-old twins, who can currently be seen on PandaCam hosted by Animal Planet L!VE at zooatlanta.org/pandacam, are expected to make their debut in December 2016 or January 2017. Like Mei Lun and Mei Huan before them, the twins will be named in accordance with the Chinese 100 Day tradition on their 100th day on December 12, 2016.

Stay tuned to Zoo Atlanta Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for social media updates on Mei Lun’s and Mei Huan’s travels, and visit zooatlanta.org for blog posts on the giant pandas. Visit the cubs’ father, Yang Yang, at the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation Giant Panda Conservation Center."

My oh my have these cubs grown. There are growing up so fast. Many of you may know now that the cubs are girls! As I'm sure many of you have seen on PandaCam, the girls now are able to roll over on their bellies and backs, and they are able to scoot around the nest box. They are both also starting to show more of their personalities as well. Cub A tends to be the more sleepy panda, and Cub B likes to be the feisty one. Today, during their vet check, the girls received their first set of shots, and they took it like champs, without making a single peep. Which I could say the same, when I go to the doctor.

Adorable! Does anyone remember when the staff put both babies in with Lun Lun for the first time?
