The panda cub is taking small steps! Over the weekend and yesterday cam watchers may have noticed that she has been able to get her hind legs underneath her and stand up. She hasn't gotten very far yet though, she's only takes a few steps before sitting back down and crawling. On Sunday she almost walked out of the den all by herself. She stood in the doorway of the den trying to get her hind legs underneath her and walk, but she tired herself out and took a nap in the doorway instead.

As the cub becomes increasing more mobile, Mei Xiang has started to take her out of the den for short forays into the indoor enclosures. On Saturday she took the cub out of the den and put her on the floor of the larger indoor enclosure while she got a drink.

Don't forget to cast your vote to name our giant panda cub! More than 99,000 people have voted so far! The poll is open until November 22. On December 1, when the cub is 100 days old, we will announce the winning name.

Keepers weighed the cub quickly again this morning - and she now weighs 10.34 pounds (4.7 kilos).

I was lucky enough to watch this live!!! By the time I got the recorder on the cam, everything FROZE!!! Thank goodness DoxieMom got it recorded.

Since the vid, they have installed a "step down"...should make it less scary the next time somebody gets up the nerve to go out into the day room!!!

Just checked in and they were sound asleep. :zzzzz :zzzzz But the next instant they were awake and playing away.
I bet Lun Lun thinks this twin business is pretty nice. Instead of bothering her to play, they have each other! :teehee:

Things have been very busy in the panda nursery lately! The Animal Management Team is keeping a close eye on Lun Lun and the cubs and has been observing their behavior since they were given access to the dayroom exhibit on Monday. Rebecca Snyder, PhD, Curator of Mammals, took some time to answer a few more of your giant panda questions:

What vocalizations does Lun Lun use to communicate with the cubs, and vice versa?
The cubs don’t vocalize often anymore, which is normal. In the first few weeks of life, they are very vocal because they have to be repositioned frequently to stay warm and to nurse. They don’t need that type of intensive care anymore. Lun Lun’s vocalizations are also infrequent. Occasionally, she will bleat when she is looking for one of the cubs. Bleating is a friendly vocalization. Giant pandas use this during the breeding season, and a mother will also use this vocalization to call to her cubs.

Has Lun Lun gained a normal amount of weight, and is she expected to gain more since she’s feeding two cubs?
Lun Lun is at the upper end of her normal weight range, which is right where we want her to be. We want to make sure she has enough reserves to produce milk for two rapidly growing cubs.

Is Lun Lun giving both cubs equal care and nursing time? She sometimes appears to favor one over the other.
Lun Lun is caring for both cubs equally. There is no indication that she favors one cub more than the other. She is equally responsive to both cubs.

Thanks, Rebecca! We are so happy that Lun Lun and cubs are healthy and enjoying family time together!

Thursday, November 21 Update
Mei Lun is becoming quite the inquisitive panda cub. At one point last night, I offered Lun Lun fresh bamboo with biscuits and produce in Den 3. Lun Lun immediately went over and started eating, having just woken up from a lengthy four-hour nap. Mei Lun had woken up from his slumber as Lun Lun passed him on her way to fresh food and decided to follow. Over the shift door ledge he went and explored the bamboo in Den 3 before discovering what his mom was eating. He became very interested in the smell of the leafeater biscuits and even licked them a few times! Then he discovered that some of the biscuits roll on the floor and was entertained for a few minutes as he rolled the biscuit around the den. After the excitement of rolling biscuits wore off, Mei Lun went back to his mom to see if she would play. Unfortunately she was more interested in bamboo, and after awhile he gave up and put himself back to bed in the nestbox in Den 2 where his brother was snoozing away.

Keep your eyes on PandaCam! You may occasionally see the cam shift to focus on the interior dayroom exhibit. As of yesterday, Lun Lun has been given access to the dayroom, meaning she can choose to go out there herself (which she has done) or to go out there with company! Right now, there’s no guarantee, but there’s a chance that in the coming days, guests may see Lun Lun and the cubs in the dayroom. We can’t wait until they’re out full-time – stay tuned for updates!

The cubs are so playful with each other! But we also know panda cubs love their sleep. Heather Roberts, Keeper III, has noticed that Mei Lun and Mei Huan have some scheduling issues with their play and nap time. She has this to share with Cub Confidential:
“The cubs have not coordinated their playtimes yet. One cub always seems to be playful when the other one is sleepy. The playful one then ‘harasses’ the sleepy one until he is ready to play. Mei Lun does not like to be woken up to play and gets annoyed with his brother if he bothers him while sleeping. However, Mei Huan does not mind if Mei Lun wakes him up for playtime! In the past, the same thing happened to Lun Lun when she was with a cub. Whenever Lun Lun would go to rest, the cub would wake up and want to play! I think this time will be easier on Lun Lun in that respect since the cubs will have each other to play with. Once the cubs are older, they will sleep less as well, so hopefully, they will synchronize their play times and nap times."

Thanks, Heather! That little Mei Huan loves to wrestle, especially when Mei Lun is trying to sleep!

Mei Lun goes on a field trip and more!

If you were watching PandaCam yesterday afternoon, you got a treat! Lun Lun came into the dayroom exhibit -- carrying Mei Lun! He only had a few seconds to sniff and explore this wide new world before Mom decided it was time to head back into the dens; she carried him part of the way back, and he obediently toddled along behind her as they disappeared from view. Keep an eye on the cam, or be sure to stop by the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation Giant Panda Conservation Center if you happen to be at the Zoo. For now, there's still no guarantee of seeing Lun Lun or the cubs in the dayroom, but yesterday's Zoo visitors know that you never know when lucky guests may enjoy sightings!

How's Lun Lun managing her "double trouble" lately?

Is caring for two curious twins as exhausting as we suspect it is? Panda Keeper Heather Roberts shares a few insights on Lun Lun's habits:

"Since Lun Lun and the cubs have been together all of the time, Lun Lun seems to be sleeping for longer periods of time overnight. Typically she gets up a couple of times in the wee hours to eat, but this last week, she has slept five or six hours at a time at night. At the same time, she is also not taking many naps during the day. The daytime and second shift keepers are constantly providing her with fresh bamboo. I don't know if having both cubs at the same time is more tiring for her or if she's exhausted from all of that eating!"

Thanks, Heather! We know Mama knows best, so we trust Lun Lun will manage her beauty sleep accordingly.

Black Friday with your favorite black-and-white bears
Image

Image

We hope everyone's enjoying a wonderful holiday weekend with friends and family! Lun Lun and the cubs spent most of Black Friday inside, hanging out and engaging in their favorite activities: eating, playing, and sleeping (in no particular order). Visitors to the Zoo on Wednesday, November 27 enjoyed two pre-Thanksgiving treats of equal rarity. While a few unseasonable snow flurries fell around the Zoo, guests at the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation Giant Panda Conservation Center got a real thrill with a lengthy appearance by Mei Lun, Mei Huan and Lun Lun, who spent several hours on exhibit in the dayroom!

Mei Lun and Mei Huan charmed all present with their curious explorations of the dayroom -- an adventure filled with unfamiliar substrate under their feet, logs to sniff and attempt to mount, and more -- but the climactic moment of cuteness happened when Lun Lun took Mei Lun on Baby's First Adventure in the Hammock. If you know from following previous cubs on PandaCam, this is the first of many times Lun Lun will be seen with a cub in that spot!

Image

We continue to refer to this time as what we call the "sightings" phase, since Lun Lun and the cubs can choose to enter the dayroom or remain in the indoor dens. But if Wednesday's events are any indication, Zoo guests may get lucky anytime when one or two or all three decide to make everyone's day. We'll keep watching and waiting, and we know their fans will do the same! On behalf of everyone in the Zoo Atlanta family, our best wishes for a safe and happy Thanksgiving weekend.
