Wow, thanks for the bear-cam news Kitten!! Yea, Rock Star cubbie :pumpcat:

Cub Update:
Wildlife Center-VA

October 25 update
Wildlife rehabilitator Suzy Doell reports that the Bear cub #11-2532 has been eating quite well since his arrival one week ago. On Monday, October 24, the bear cub received a special treat — a whole pumpkin! While the bear may rip into the pumpkin and eat some of it, the main objective of this addition was to provide some enrichment for the cub. It appears as though the bear has been rolling the pumpkin around his enclosure since receiving it yesterday.

November 1 update on little cubbie... :pumpwave:
Wildlife Center -VA-

Wildlife rehabilitator Suzy and Dr. Miranda went up to the bear enclosure on November 1 for a weigh-in session and cleaning. The plan was for Suzy to scare the bear out of the den area and into a pre-weighed crate. That plan did not go so well … rather than being frightened into running away from the humans, the bear cub stood his ground — literally. Suzy poked her head into the bear den and Black Bear cub #11-2532 stood up on his hind legs and took a swipe at Suzy — so she promptly backed off.

Plan B is to watch and wait — if the bear ventures of the den, one of the staff will run up to the enclosure and will lock him out of his den by shutting the guillotine door from the outside. This will greatly increase the chances of the bear running into the crate. If that doesn’t work … well, the bear looks good! He has been eating well and appears to be plumper than he was two weeks ago. The next examination will be in two weeks — and that exam will require sedation.

Polar bears Kaluk and Chinook at the San Diego Zoo are giving another try to baby-making. They have giving this a good go in the past, all for naught. The zookeepers are hoping for a better outcome this year, and are watching carefully. The equipment for both bears seems to be all in order, but the expected results have not happened. But now, Chinook is in breeding mode again, and has been giving her man the come-hither look, and he happily follows her wherever she goes. Last year, he had a nice little dance routine going for her, and she seemed moderately impressed with his moves. Here is the report on the web site:

I can appreciate wanting to keep the public safe, but if they knew this bear was roaming there were much better ways to handle this than killing the poor bear.

This happens occasionally in metro Atlanta. Not once, the past several years, has a black bear been shot that roams into residential areas...They are trapped and relocated. I guess I don't understand why they didn't set a trap..especially if they are considered endangered...

Giant Panda gives birth to twins

BEIJING (AP) — A giant panda has given birth to twins, the first pair of the endangered species born in the world this year, according to a wildlife center in southwest China.

The China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Sichuan province said the panda named Haizi gave birth to the two cubs 10 minutes apart on Saturday.

Staffers at the center, which is part of the Wolong Nature Reserve, say one cub is a female and weighs 79.2 grams (2.79 ounces). Haizi has yet to release the other cub from her embrace.

Giant pandas have difficulty breeding, with females fertile for only two or three days a year.

Pandas number about 1,600 in the wild, where they are critically endangered due to poaching and development. More than 300 live in captivity, mostly in China's breeding programs.
