:sfwave: OMG - the baby polar bear has a really, really, BIG mouth!! It puts Hope to shame!! I thought Hope was loud, have you all heard this polar bear baby scream? My volume is down to 1 and the people in the apt above me can probably hear it, the cub is SOOOO loud! Here is a pic of him throwing a temper tantrum screaming, then a second one where he is suckling LOUD also, purring like Hope does, where you can see he is laying on his stomach suckling with his back legs sticking out. He almost fell asleep too, but mom made the mistake of washing him. Remember how Hope would resist a bath? Well, that woke him up and the screaming resumed! :vallaf:

Ted and Lucky den action today...I watched most of the guys -talking

From facebook - Ted&Lucky thread.

Carol Bauer Peterson posted...
I had to settle down myself before trying to add something here after seeing and hearing the conflict between Ted and Lucky today (2/10/11). It was right after new bedding was delivered to the boys. Ted was very interested in what was going on outside too. He acted as though he wanted to go out - he would set a paw out a little and then pull it back - he was so hesitant. After awhile when he and Lucky began raking the bedding both boys had words to say to each other. It was quit an ordeal and I think many of us were actually afraid they would have a knock down fight right there in the den. Lucky seemed to be the aggressor in the beginning but then Ted had enough and let Lucky know by charging Lucky. We heard snarling and high pitched whines. Lucky quickly retreated to the side and back of the den and proceeded to bury himself in the new hay. Was he instinctively trying to lay low? Their reaction to one another was so astonishing. We all wondered what is going on and were very worried. Several people had to leave the den cam because of it.
As of this writing (4:00 CST) Ted and Lucky are peacefully sleeping. It took Ted a long time to settle down. He kept alternating between raking the bedding, looking out the opening of the den, sniffing the hay, looking over at Lucky, licking the air with his tongue and clacking his jaws. He seemed like one nervous bear. Was it caused by the new bedding - a different smell introduced probably, as Gail Wanner suggested? If only we could read their minds!

Don't know exactly where to put this, hope it is ok here. For those of you who remember the little polar bear newborn rejected by his mom and raised by a handler at the Berlin Zoo, beloved Knut died saturday in his exhibit at the age of 4. An autopsy will be done tomorrow to determine what happened. Such a loss of a young polar bear that had the whole world pulling for him. Rest in peace Knut, you were beautiful.

Sad news from the Toronto Zoo. The pregnant female, Aurora, attacked and killed two of her three newborn cubs on Thursday. The third cub is clinging to life in the Intensive Care Unit. From what we all can gather, Aurora did not understand what she is expected to do as a mother. She is 10 years old and has been in captivity almost her whole life.

Here is a recent newspaper article about Aurora and her newborn cubs:

I sure hope the little guy makes it.

That is so sad and bizarre. I wonder if it has something to do with hormones being out of balance.

I have been looking for updates, but there has not been anything. I don't know why they are not giving us updates on the poor cub's condition; I guess the Zoo feels that it has nothing new to report. I guess no news is good news; i.e., if the cub had died, we would have heard about it.

Thanks Elaine...

October 19 update on the Suffolk bear cubs...The Wildlife Center of Virginia.

When Dr. Miranda and wildlife rehabilitator Suzy checked on the cubs this morning, they found one bear cub in the main chamber of the bear pen and the other sleeping in the den. Both cubs appear to be doing just fine and most of yesterday’s meal was gone.

October 20 update
~ The Wildlife Center of Virginia.
:cryinggirl:
On Thursday, Center wildlife rehabilitators found Bear Cub #11-2531 had died in the bear enclosure. This is the smaller, quieter of the two cubs admitted after the sow was killed in Suffolk on Monday.

At this point, the veterinary team does not know why cub #11-2531 died. The Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study at the University of Georgia will perform a necropsy on the cub. It will likely take several weeks to receive results.

Bear cub #11-2532 will be monitored closely over the next few days. At this point, the veterinary staff have scheduled him for a weigh-in on Monday, October 31.

I just went to look at the GHO at The Wildlife Center of Virginia. and found that they have a cam on the cub now I didn't get any pictures but short video, it looked like it was having a ball in its hay/straw pile. :leaves:
