Video: Chehalis Fish Hatchery

Better than watching an aquarium :thumbup

“Chehalis River Hatchery is a salmonid enhancement facility operated by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (Government of Canada) near Harrison Mills in the province of British Columbia in Canada. We use modern fish culture techniques to produce coho salmon, chinook salmon, chum salmon, pink salmon, steelhead trout, and sea-run cutthroat trout. The juvenile fish are reared for two months to one year (depending on the species) at the hatchery and then released into the Chehalis River and the Harrison River. The juveniles then migrate to the Fraser River and out to the Pacific Ocean. The fish grow in the ocean from a few months up to four or five years. Those that have not been caught in various commercial and sport fisheries then return to the Chehalis River, the Harrison River, and the hatchery to spawn.”

This unique video is of a tourist who sat on the beach to watch the seals and penguins on Gold Harbor , South Georgia . Unexpectedly, one of the seals is apparently attracted to her and, slowly works his way over to her. He seems to 'falls in love' and snuggles and flirts with her. It is quite an unusual and interesting scene. The seals are huge (up to 6,000 lbs), yet she never seemed afraid . . . more amused . . .. while someone shot the video of this incident.

Gold Harbor , South Georgia, is located off the southern tip of South America . (sub arctic) It is a small bay five miles SSW of Cape Charlotte, with Bertrab Glacier at its head, along the east end of Georgia . The west end of the beach where a glacial stream flows is a breeding ground for various types of penguins and large seals. It is not a frequent destination for tourists.

:hithere: Hope its ok to post this info here. First, a couple years ago I saw a video and absolutely fell in love with cuttlefish. YES, thats right, cuttlefish. Have you ever seen them? They are the most intelligent and high functioning invertebrate creature, along with the giant pacific octopus, both in the family of cephelapods. Wanted to share a link and some pics with you folks. The video I saw was NOVA: Kings of Camouflage, The Cuttlefish. I will post the link for anyone to watch the video, just clik on the arrow to start movie. You will be amazed. Now, the other creature I fell in love with was the Giant Pacific Octopus. They are extremely intelligent and high functioning vertebrates too. They can fit their bodies through anything the size of a quarter, as that is the size of their beak, which is solid. The National Zoo has a cam showing off their female giant pacific octopus Caroline. She is quite a show off and I can tell you today she was really showing off to the visitors. There is also a video of Caroline in color in a tank, and I will give you a link. The cam is "slow" viewing compared to birds, but I can assure you, you will want to check in on Caroline from time to time once youre hooked. The most precious thing about the female gp octopus is they live only 5 yrs. They have one clutch, hundreds of icicle like tubers hanging in her cave, with her precious eggs in them. She cleans them daily with her suckers and legs, also blowing water to wash them. When they are ready to hatch, they are blown out of the cave to get caught up in the current. Her last act as a mother to them, an act of total love, takes place. See, she tends to the eggs for months, not eating, and then will succumb to death. So as she sees them being taken into the sea current, she throws herself down onto the sea floor for the predators to attack and consume her, as a distraction, so they will not get her offspring, and the hatchlings can sneak away safely. No other creature does that. Here are some pics, the light varies according to any visitors blocking the light, etc. Today Caroline was scooting herself from end to end of the tank, entertaining everyone and putting on a show for real! Hope you enjoy these pics and links, and thanks for letting me tell the story. Maybe you will come to love these creatures too or at least find them extremely interesting, and a story to tell your friends about.

40+ years ago here we had alot of box turtles and due to the growth of suburban sprawl here they seemed to have dissappeared until now i hope. This one was sunning himself on my back lawn this am and is the first turtle ive seen here in over 40 years. He doesnt resemble the ones we used to see when i was a kid but if the eyes are indicative of the sex like they are for box turtles this one is a male due to the red eyes. A female box turtle's eyes are amber while the males have red eyes

I hope he finds an eligible "lady friend" to make eggs with as i would love to see more turtles in the future here after a very long absence
