:hatchegg: B14 cleared the half shell at 8:27 this morning and just a few minutes ago possibly had 1st 1-2 bites of food from none other than Pa!! Was on the half shell starting at around midnight.

Here's a video of Pa meeting B14 for the 1st time by Bel-a Donna. Saw this live during the night and it is hilarious. Pa held his position!

:7val: Another late night visit from Pa. He arrived to the left rails at 2:40 am and made his way across the rear nest and eventually up to the right branch and out of sight. Unfortunately, the AC cam went down earlier this eve, so we will not be able to see him till he comes back down the branch some. I believe he will spend the night. Rocky peeped up over the left rails at 2:22 am and seconds later she heard him and did a short wing slap.

Rocky returned and messed around between 3:35 and 3:36 waking up the Mom and she got up for a wing slap.
Eventually Pa eases down the right branch at 3:39 and heads for the bowl to settle as Mom is up messing with the food again. She normally does not do this, but this is the 3rd time I have seen her up messing with the food on the nest between earlier this evening and now. She has yet to feed B14 herself, but the desire to do so seems to be there, but she just doesn't seem to understand how to yet. She backed up onto the base of the left branch and eventually feaked, so she did get some bites in for herself this time I guess.

:15heartbeat: Unfortunately B14 climbed out of the bowl earlier this eve during a feed in the rain and Mom was unable to get him back in the bowl. B14 is well into the dying process from exposure. :15heartbeat:

I am too heartbroken to post tonight on today's events that started so joyously and ended so tragically. Will try to post tomorrow in this spot.

:15heartbeat: Mid afternoon, she buried the egg under fluff. She and Pa were both back to the nest a few times and Pa would get on the bowl and settle a couple times, but eventually leave. She did come back to the nest and eventually up to the right branch and out of sight on cam 1, but can be seen on the AC now. Looks as if she will be spending the night. She is hard to see, but up high on the right branch and her tail is illuminated.

:1val: She ended up spending the whole night on the right branch. She flew at about 6:30 this morning. Both have been in and out and he brought her a fish today. The nest and tree are empty tonight.

:1val: Multiple visits to the nest today by Pa and/or the female. Many were short visits, especially when alone. Fluff and a stick were brought in by Pa. Most visits were spent on nestorations or looking around. Pa flew at 6:37 for the day and she flew at 6:49 for the day. The nest remains empty at 1:54 am.

:1val: Lots of nestorations today with sticks being brought in. They got into a snipping spat and even heard and saw a mating at 10:13 on one of the back trees this morning! She came in quite awhile before dark this evening and perched on the left branch calling and calling for Pa, but he never responded. She flew at 6:20 from the rear nest toward the left and then to the rear and upward. Pa showed up to the left branch at 6:44, then to the nest at 6:45 and flew out toward the left into the darkness seconds later. It is raining and the nest and tree remain empty at 11:17 pm.

:1val: Gigi, I don't know, but remember what Dr. Sharpe said. Update from Berry:

Berry College Eagles
Favorites · 3 hrs ·
Although nesting season came to an early end at the Berry nest, we will continue to see the eagles visit, probably to make changes to the nest like they did this morning! Chances of the eagles laying another clutch appear to be low, but we promise we're keeping an eye out and will update you immediately if it does happen.
ETA: If you are just coming in to this nesting season via this post, you can find our past updates on this season's eggs and eaglet by scrolling back on this page.

:1val: You are too quick gigi, I was going to add this above as I said I remembered what Dr. Sharpe had said about 2nd clutches (after an eaglet/s hatched from 1st clutch, but died. Remember eaglet/s not simply eggs lost in a 1st clutch) I personally was one of the 2 people who asked him about this last year.

It seems even Dr. Sharpe had not heard of this before. Dr. Sharpe was asked about this very thing today and here are his 2 responses to those questions.

"I've not heard of that before and I think it would only be likely in extreme southern latitudes that breed early (see explanation below)."

Institute for Wildlife Studies Mod • an hour ago
"I've seen questions about why the birds in Florida were able to have another clutch after raising a chick for a few weeks. I think it is probably because down there they nest before the winter solstice. Because laying is primarily driven by day length, after they failed the day length was still similar to when they laid the first time."

Gigi, I know Harriet usually has always laid eggs in November and a time or two as late as December. Always before the winter solstice. Her 1st clutch that produced E14 that we lost in January 2020 was laid in November 2019. E14 lived about 27 days. At Berry it is usually after the winter solstice. The female at Berry laid January 1st and 4th. B14 lived around 1 1/2 days.

I did the math and Harriet laid the 1st egg of her 2nd clutch within 33 or 34 (from my memory, I have it written down somewhere.) minutes of the daylight hour conditions for her 1st clutch. (Which would be similar light conditions as Dr. Sharpe referenced above.) For the Berry female to achieve this (I calculated to take her out to within 33 or 34 minutes of the light conditions of her 1st laid clutch, to meet the same timing of Harriet's success with a 2nd clutch ) she would have needed to have laid her 2nd clutch on a date near the end of January 2021. And Harriet's chick lived about 27 days whereas the Berry chick lived about 1 1/2 days.
