AEF NEFL Eagle Cam 12-12-18:17.49 Romeo and Juliet Protect Nest and Eggs

This video, captured by our night-time infrared lighting, is from the nest of NEFL Bald Eagles Romeo & Juliet. Both eagles have been very busy the last two days protecting their territory, nest and eggs. Today Juliet was scarce but she did show up a couple times but was not there long (most likely protecting her territory). Romeo was incubating most of the day. In the afternoon Juliet arrived and Romeo and Juliet flew off with vocals and were gone for a period of time. Romeo arrived back and started incubating right away, but then a subadult flew in and was perched on the outer branches of the nest. Romeo was not happy and was vocalizing, but he settled down continuing to incubate. Juliet showed up with many vocals, went to the nest and both she and Romeo continued to show their unhappiness with the subadult intruder. Romeo got off eggs and escorted the subadult away, while Juliet incubated her eggs. They both got some much needed sleep.

:nailbite: It has been a real nail biter of a week at this nest as Romeo and Juliet have been dealing with an intruder. Loza, thank you for the pics and videos. Juliet still appears on edge and I wonder if the intruder is still in the area.

This all started the evening of 12/11, when Juliet became scarce. She returned at 2 AM, when Romeo, who was incubating, called for her. Juliet incubated the morning of 12/12, but became scarce again most of the day. Romeo incubated in her absence. She returned to the nest tree that afternoon, all puffed up with no visible injuries. The eggs were left unattended for 2 hrs. By nightfall, a subadult eagle appeared in the nest tree. Romeo incubated that night and Juliet perched in the nest tree. At that point, Juliet had visible beak injuries. At 10 PM, the subadult was chased off by Romeo. On 12/13 at 2:30 PM, an adult bald eagle perched in the nest tree while Romeo was incubating. The eagle had no visible injuries and flew off in haste. It is believed that this is the same eagle that was seen at the nest in Oct. A 1/2 hr later, an adult bald eagle landed in the nest and Romeo got off the eggs to confront the eagle, pushing it over the nest edge. Romeo then resumed incubation. I don't know who incubated that night or the events of the next day. On the evening of 12/14, there was very heavy rain and Juliet incubated through the storm. Romeo took over in the middle of the night while Juliet perched nest side. Today, Juliet was scarce again and Romeo incubated all day. At 11 AM, Juliet checked on the eggs, but looked nervous and took off. She returned again at 2 PM and Romeo took off with her. Mating was heard off cam as they reaffirmed their bond to each other. The eggs were left unattended today for 1 1/2 hrs. This evening, Romeo is incubating while Juliet is perched sleeping in the nest tree with a very large crop. I understand that during the day, the grounds crew saw Juliet perched at the top of a dead tree, from which she could view the nest and her territory. She is clearly putting up a front and not hiding from anyone. It is presumed that the intruder was a female.

This nest has always been peaceful, but with an increasing eagle population searching for territories, we are unfortunately going to see more of these skirmishes. I am praying that peace once again returns to the Hamlet. I hope Romeo & Juliet and their family to be, remain safe. Pip watch is in 4 days, beginning 12/19.

Here are some pics of Juliet's beak injury from this morning. It is considered minor and should heal. I also saw some scratches on her talons. Last nights heavy rain washed away the bloody stains from her feathers and beak. She looked much better today. Romeo has really been Juliet's right wing through this ordeal. He has been on egg duty almost constantly while Juliet's been distracted protecting her territory. Such a team effort. He is a terrific Dad and mate. :15heartbeat:

Juliet slept perched in the nest tree last night, but did not take over incubation from Romeo until 2:49 AM. She incubated for almost 4 hrs until leaving at 6:35 AM. She has not been back to the nest since. Romeo has been incubating all day and has started taking more frequent breaks this afternoon, leaving for very short intervals before returning. I hope someone on the ground sees Juliet. I'm getting worried. Juliet where are you?

:ohyes: Whew is right! What a relief. She got back at 5:15 PM and it looks like she is settling in for night. She looks fine. I hope she incubates all night. Romeo could use a break. I understand that an hour earlier, she was seen in that same dead tree she was in yesterday. That must be her lookout post where she can see and be seen. Since Romeo was not calling for her, I was beginning to get the impression he knew where she was. Thanks Bonbon.

5:15 PM Juliet comes home.

oh my. there appears the intruder was in the nest around 4pm . romeo is back. ground crew is monitoring area, so I hope Juliet is O.K.

I just remember this happened at Berry last year, but al turned out O.K. talons crossed. Juliet will probably try and draw intruder away, instead of confrontation around eggs.

:sum7: This is not a good situation. There is a new female at the nest.

I had a feeling that Juliet's long periods away and Romeo's constant incubation meant an intruder was still hanging around. Juliet last visited the nest yesterday morning at 9:21 AM with a long look at her eggs. She has not been seen since. An adult female approached the nest today and Romeo confronted her. He is unscathed. This is not the same female from last week. This female is large and believed to be about 4-5 yrs old with dark streaking, so she may be in her 1st breeding season. Several times today she inspected the eggs, fluffed the nest, and looked like she was about to incubate. She is in the nest tree tonight. Whenever she moves into the nest, Romeo gives her space and moves out. He is not interested in a battle with a larger eagle that would cause him injury. He needs to stay healthy for the eggs. He is not chasing her away, but is wary. We don't know what tomorrow will bring. This eagle has a small cut on her left talon. The fact that she has penetrated the nesting area is concerning to me for Juliet's wellbeing. Here are pics from this evening.

Here is a video of the interaction with Romeo at the nest around 330 pm this afternoon. She did not fight him, but he could not budge her out of the nest. She appears to mean no harm.

840 pm - New female in the nest. Romeo had moved away from her and the eggs.

hi Nadia,

I have been following and following their chat. I do believe the ground crew will be out looking tomorrow again.

I am holding onto hope, fo r Juliet. If you remember we had that interloper at Berry last year that did hang out on the outer branches for a few days. and then finally they chased it off. I am hoping Juliet is watching or healing. She would not want a big fight on her nest either. not at this time.

prayers for this nest . :15heartbeat:

Hi Bev,

I just added a video to my prior post. It is of the confrontation between Romeo and this new female at the nest this afternoon. She appeared more curious than anything when she moved into the nest. The behavior is quite interesting to watch. She actually took a juvie submissive posture with him when he attacked her, but he could not move her out of the nest. She is a big girl and quite good looking. She appears to mean no harm. We will see what tomorrow brings.

HATCH WEEK
December 19, 2018 (SW FL hatch week too)
It'd be so sad if a new female replaced Juliet!

RRP thinks she is a 5 year old.
Juliet has not been seen since yesterday morning at 10:00 AM.
