Bachelorette #2
January 9, 2019
AEF is NOT naming the eagles
5.45 am I heard Twitchy shake himself - he is offcam, the stinker
I think I heard a squirrel scolding

Twitchy arrives with a big fish - and eats it
He's done this daily. Chat guesses are

1 - Attract a mate
2 - Claiming the nest as his
3 - Hungry
4 - All 4 (my pick)

Bachelorette #2 shows up to eat his fish
This is NOT Missy! Uh oh :o
Nice of her to appear during chat - they agree its NOT Missy

B2 has one advantage over Missy ....
she's QUIET!

9.45 am No mating as of 9.45 am ......
They did do nest restorations together
If Missy returns, there may be a fight

AEF believes R&J will return, I dont. They've been evicted.
This pair have defended the nest against others, and attempted mating

I took LOTS of pics

Nice pics, Shep! She is also beautiful. I came in when they were doing a close-up of her head. When I left RR it said my download was still in progress. I thought I was just enlarging your pics, so I could see them better. :teehee: I have a new computer and I am having trouble navigating with it.

10.15 am Vocals (singing) - on branchs on opposite sides of the nest
Reminds me of typical eagle pair dawn or evening song

Jan 9, 9:15 AM cyn_AEF (Admin):
We have an attempted mating at 10:09. Both flew off at 10:13
(it DID NOT sound like mating to me)

tweetie_AEF (Moderator):
1:35 pm Male and new F (Bachelorette #2) arrived, she brought partial fish and ate it on the nest, while Male perched. Both seemed to be tracking another visitor from above, (Missy??) both flew with loud vocals at 1:51

2.45 pm Bachelorette #2 arrived in nest, ate fish, left 10 minutes later

My guess - and its ONLY my guess,
Missy didnt want this mate and has left the area.

Samson?
NEWS FROM THE HAMLET

Jan 9, 2:12 PM gretchen_AEF:
The male that is claiming the nest closely resembles Samson. Samson (and Delilah) were offspring of Romeo and Juliet hatched in December of 2013. He appears to be 5 yrs of age.

We compared details of their beaks, nares, ceres (which are different on the left side from the right side) and they remain consistent. Samson visited the nest in June and July 2018.
His middle toe is somewhat flat (smashed). Juliet stepped on Samson’s toe when he was in the nest.

AEF-NEFL GOOD NEWS FROM THE HAMLET!!
Unfortunately Romeo and Juliet haven’t been sighted, but we haven’t lost hope on that! However, we may have the next best thing - as the male that is “claiming” the nest closely resembles Samson. Samson (and Delilah) were offspring of Romeo and Juliet hatched in December of 2013. Through observation, this male appears to be 5 yrs of age and after serious collaboration among the AEF-NEFL Team, we have drawn our speculations by intensely reviewing photos of the male that is currently at the nest from photos of Samson. We compared details (both sides) of their beaks, nares, ceres (which are different on the left side from the right side) and they remain consistent. The male also visited the nest twice in June 2018 and once in July 2018 with dated photos to substantiate. The final indisputable characteristic is the middle toe that is somewhat flat (smashed). Many of the AEF-NEFL Cam Volunteers have been on staff since the inception of the NEFL cam program. We credit Camera Operator, cynmari_AEF, who has been diligent on the cams since day one. She knows the eagles and off-spring on cam better than anyone. She has memory of Juliet stepping on Samson’s toe when he was in the nest (see photo). The photo from June 2018, as well as today clearly show the flattened toe (see photos). Thanks also to Camera Operator, jd_AEF, for capturing many photos that helped us determine this finding and resemblance. Be certain that we are well aware that there is no way to positively ID the Male. With the insight the live cams provide combined with our diligent cam staff, we have hope and good reason to believe that we could have Samson back in the nest!

:flirty: I personally think Samson is "head over heels" in "eagle Love" with the newest female who showed up today. I noticed that the mods mentioned more than once, how he IMMEDIATELY flies after her when she leaves. I remember seeing M15 do this when he was trying to court Harriet and Aries when he wanted Durand as his mate. They both convinced their lovely ladies that they were the one!! :teehee:

:15heartbeat: This is very nice news. I had mentioned when he 1st arrived that he might be Samson. A 2013 hatch. He looks so very much like Romeo. How wonderful would that be to have Romeo and Juliet's offspring continue at this nest - their legacy. What a blessing indeed for Grechen. It makes a changeover so much easier to accept. Today, Samson came home with a new girlfriend. F was last seen on Jan 7 at 1145AM. AEF is calling this new girl F2. Samson tried to mate with her today, but she is not quite ready.

Nice video today from the American Eagle Foundation of Samson with his new sweetheart. :loveheart2:

:flirty: As I leave for the night, Samson and the beautiful, new female from today remain perched together as they have all evening. There was an unknown incident (intruder?) that caused both to respond vocally earlier. Samson then eased a little closer to her. But thankfully, everything has been calm since.

:flowers Woo hoo….thanks Swinwk. Sounds like she has accepted his advances. Samson seemed quite smitten with F2 yesterday,...following her around and occasionally nibbling on her feathers. They slept very close to each other last night. Love is in the air! :15heartbeat:

Ohboyohboyohboy! I'd love to see little ones this season (if it stays peaceful, that is!).

Thanks again for all the updates!
