E13 appears fine this morning. Lady Hawk has You Tube video of event from last eve that begins with Dad bringing in the catfish @ the 2:50 mark. You can clearly see that the barb is impaled as E13 is flipped onto his back.

Feeding in progress, but E13 self-fed on scraps while E12 snoozed just prior!! :flirty:

:flirty: Went back on the DVR this morning to catch E12 and E13 alone in the nest, although Harriet was above on a limb. They are so sweet together when food is not in the equation, each moving sticks, having a peck @ the barren fish head, gentle pecks @ each other. Ferenz, nice capture above of E13's close-up relishing his scrap between bites of what flesh remained as E12 slept just out of view!! Proof once again they find a way to eat despite the bonking!!

:15heartbeat: Feed in progress with both getting bites. No bonking while I was there. In fact, each waited quietly and patiently while other being fed several bites in a row!

:penguin: Class is currently in session and I noticed this exchange and thought it was neat to see! They wanted to know if an eagles feet get cold as there are no feathers. The following is Ginny's (admin) reply:

GinnyLWI (Admin): Nature has provided well for the eagles when it comes to cold weather. Birds’ feet are cold resistance, consisting of mostly tendon, bone, and sinew - with very few nerves. Their feet are also covered with specialized scales that minimize heat loss.
Jan 17, 1:28 PM
GinnyLWI (Admin): There’s not a lot of active tissue in a bird foot. The muscles are mostly located in the thigh region, and so that leaves the mostly hollow bone, skin and some connective tissue. So, the bird feet do not require a high amount of blood flow.
Jan 17, 1:28 PM
GinnyLWI (Admin): Most birds have the ability to alter blood flow to their legs through the use of a counter-current system of blood vessels. It is an adaption that keeps their feet from freezing - called “rete mirabile” (latin for ‘wonderful net’). It refers to a fine, netlike pattern of arteries that interweaves blood from a bird’s heart with the veins carrying cold blood from its feet and legs. This interweaving warms the cold blood in these veins before it reaches the bird’s heart.
Jan 17, 1:28 PM
GinnyLWI (Admin): The system cools the blood so the little blood that goes down to the feet is already cold, so the birds don’t lose much heat. The small amount that goes to the feet is likely just enough to keep the feet from freezing.
Jan 17, 1:29 PM
GinnyLWI (Admin): In simpler terms, birds can control the temperature of their legs and feet separately from their bodies by constricting blood flow to their extremities, thereby reducing heat loss.

Harriet and M15 are up on the branches blowing in the wind, drying off I guess from the rains during the night. Noticed while still dark this morning, Mom looked very wet in the nest.

E12 is stretching it's wings and E13 playing with a stick. Really miss the sound of this nest, hopefully that will be repaired by next season.

Note this morning from site mod:

Good Morning! Midnight-4:00am The E’s have spent their first night alone in the nest and both have slept very well. Harriet and M15 are perched quietly on the attic branches watching over their eaglets and resting peacefully.
