Nest news from Lisa-webmaster...

Nest Update

01/01/13:
Technical Alert:
Because our new pan/zoom camera requires more power than our solar panel/battery can handle,
we're working with the local power company to get the cam power hard-wired so we won't have to worry about maintaining the batteries.

FYI~First egg for Blackwater - 2012- ...> Jan. 11th

Just found this post on their FB page. . .dated today!!!

The new pan/zoom cam uses a lot of power, and our old battery (driven by a solar panel) just wasn't up to the task. We were running through a battery every day. So Choptank Electric is coming out to run a cable under the road and to the power box. The process is moving along, but we have to get it inspected and then up and running, and it's taking a bit longer. But we're making progress.

:popc: The kids will be ready to fledge by the time we see them. ..First egg last year was 1/11!!!

The nest isn't too far from the road, although I'm not sure why they need to get inspected. It will be a great cam once its done though!

1/9 update:

    Technical Alert:
Choptank Electric will reportedly have electricity flowing to the new cable near the Eagle Cam next week. We'll then be able to get the electrician to inspect our setup, which will move us closer to having enough power for the new pan/zoom cam. Last we heard, the eagle couple was adding material to the nest and having an occasional meal there.

Posting this in small type...> I try to stay postive BUT - Not happy - that it is taking so long...Maybe the cam will be up by hatching time.

I don't think we need to worry Beth!! They are working on it. Sherri (on WOW) sent Lisa an email and this is her response! We may miss the eggs ... but then we just sit and watch them on top of eggs for over a month anyway ... :teehee:

" Hi Sherri,
Fortunately all our work is being done on the ground now -- away from the nest. The electric company is doing their work out by the road (where the cable is being run to the powerline) and then we have to get our software working for the new cam, but that's done at the Visitor Center.

So if we can get the power running this week and then the software set up, we'll be good to go. Meanwhile the eagles are hopefully doing what we think -- building up the nest and maybe laying the eggs. We might miss the egg laying this year (unless they start later this year for some reason) but we're working hard to make sure we get a good view of the hatching - or as good a view as we can provide with the new cam.

I know folks are a little impatient this year because we're getting a late start, but the new equipment created some added work, and once we get it straight, it will hopefully be much smoother next season.

The one thing I saw that was exciting with the new cam was the pan feature. When we use it, we can get a great view of the surrounding branches, and that means we'll be able to use it to observe the eaglets branching and maybe flying in and out of the nest -- which was something we couldn't see with the old cam.

Lisa "

Lisa's update on the Blackwater Eagle campage...

Nest Update
01/16/13:
Technical Alert:
We hear Choptank Electric has added electricity to our cam equipment. We're now waiting for the electrician to pay
the cam equipment a visit and finish the final ground work.
Then we'll get our software up and running to get the cam feed online.

1/22 Update

    Technical Alert:
Choptank Electric is finishing up their work in running electricity to our cam equipment (they had a delay with the heavy rain). Next, our electrician needs to inspect and approve the work, then we'll get our software up and running to get the cam feed online. It's possible the eagles might have an egg on the nest, but it would take about five weeks for it to hatch
