you know I watched this pair and watched Lil and Dan also.I got attached to both pairs but it was easier than I thought to accept Cher.

Her eggs were not infertile becasue of her, I believe it was circumstance. We will see next year.

I firmly believe, delisted or not, they should retrieve if they it is possible to hatch out in incubator. I do not think the job is done until we can get them back to the wild and off buildings , that are not nature, man made structures.

They've been trying to do that, but the falcons aren't listening. They seem to like living in cities. Biologists hack kids in the wild hoping they'll nest there, but most end up going to cities anyway. From my perspective, the best humans can do to help these birds is take steps to reduce the amount of glass & power lines these and all other birds have to encounter, such as burying power lines to the extent possible. There are dangers in the wild, too, as we have seen from nests on cliffsides.

These biologists kill me. Why did they let poor Dan sit on those eggs for so long? How is it that they didn't know that falcons will incubate their eggs until heck freezes over just about and no internal clock tells them differently?
:gaaaaah:
Every falcon cam watcher in the world knows that. It was like watch year 2 when I realized it and at the time, I still thought the smaller juvies weren't getting enough food, not knowing that the males were smaller.

Plus they should have taken those first eggs and tried to save them or at least get them out of the way when hatching was way past due. I know that permissions need to be obtained, but why is it that the least knowledgeable seem to be the decision makers?

Well, it's over now. I hope that Dan and Cher have success next year.

It was upsetting to watch Dan incubate all that time, but as DEF pointed out, this didn't happen because there was a nestbox provided by humans & didn't happen because of humans at all. This is an unfortunate part of nature & likely happens all the time in the wild. If they're going to intervene, I personally would prefer they save their resources for helping sick or injured falcons. On the plus side, they did eventually remove the eggs or Dan may still be incubating! :girlsad3:

Jim caught Dan and Cher in the box this morning:

Good to see them together. Looks like Cher is molting.

Someone posted this link on the SF Yahoo Forum.

Yesterday, a new eastern span of the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge was opened after 11 years of construction.

In the graphic, it is mentioned "Custom platforms under the skyway will provide a roost for seabirds". I'm not sure where the prior nests were, but I think this is fantastic news, and hopefully the design will help any falcon chicks survive fledging!
