Thanks all. Sometimes I think I'd rather not hear about when they find them when something bad has happened. Statistics show that a good number of first year raptors don't survive, but if you don't actually hear about it, you can believe all is well.

so sorry Kim. I am very slow in reading things. Been trying to get caught up on things. hugs to you all there. you do a great job of trying to keep them safe

I sometimes prefer not to know after they leave area, when something bad has happened also. that way we can stay positive. It is nice to know when things are great,

But then , here we very rarely hear of our guys, because there is a vast area they can go in Alberta, and not the interest in some areas, they may nest. and if they nest below the border, we never hear.

CJ, the old male, disappeared sometime in the early Spring and was replaced by the new male,Trinity. No word on where CJ is or what happened to him. We suspect a fight between the tiercels. At least Trinity hunted for the kids and helped Red Girl feed them until all four fledged; the kids almost certainly were CJ's.

thanks Greg. I had forgotten that. So busy at my sites. I was thinking Trinity was one of kids( :girlcrazy: :girlcrazy: )
Once my season starts I can only check in occasionally.

Always hard when a dear falcon is replaced.

thanks for all your reports

Off topic, but do you have prairie falcons in summer and gyrfalcons in the winter? Betty and I went to Churchill last October to see the polar bears. We also saw gyrfalcons. At least two were hanging out on a big cliff-like building (grain elevator?) at the Marine Terminal. You could hang out and wait and pretty soon one or both would come up to duel with each other or a passing raven.

we do get gyrfalcons in the winter, hanging out at one of our railroad in Edmonton. It is nice to see.
and yes we do have prairie falcons also.

As a matter of fact Gord had one of the biologists ,that follows that prairie falcons, make scrapes in the cliffs at Pembina. Then they used a kind of paint to make fake droppings.( he does this for prairie falcons)We have been hacking peregrines from there , for the last 3 years. this year a male yearling showed some interest towards the end of season. they will be checking the pembina cliffs next year to see if we are successful.

Great looking site -- cave with a roof to keep the weather off and hopefully great horned owls away. I hope that you have customers next year.

That is extremely interesting, Bev. Greg, there has been a Prairie Falcon show up near Shippensburg, PA the past several winters. I am STILL waiting for a Gyr to show. That's on my most wanted list. Dipped on a Gyr in Churchill several years ago.

Right now I think that it's Trinity on top of the nest box and Red Girl three ledges to the left (se).

The 2013 issue of the Delmarva Ornithologist (the journal of the Delmarva Ornithological Society) just came out. The front cover is Kim's photo of Red Girl about to catch a Red-bellied Woodpecker in front of the nest box. This is the first photo posted on the June 28, 2011 entry on Kim's blog: http://wilmfalcons.com/blog.htm

The issue also includes an article and table of mine on the Peregrines' prey. Here's a quote:

"From 2003 through 2012, Peregrines in downtown Wilmington are known to have captured 2002 birds of 71 species. Three additional species first noted in the Spring of 2013 are also listed on the table. Prey species ranged in size from a Ruby-throated Hummingbird (0.11 oz.) to a drake Ruddy Duck (1.2 lbs.). The falcons also caught two Little Brown Myotis bats (both dropped to the sidewalk uneaten) and at least one Green Darner dragonfly."

I was wondering what people were talking about so went back. totally missed that

congratulations on being recognized for all your hard work Kim and Greg

Even though I love flickers and waxwings etc, I am hoping our green girl has manged to snag a few to become independent and a proficient hunter

I didn't realize how far behind I'd gotten here!

Belated thanks to Greg for posting the information about the 2013 issue of the Delmarva Ornithologist. Congratulations to Kim for getting her photo of Red Girl on the front cover and to Greg for getting his article and Peregrine prey table published (those were really interesting statistics about the number and species of birds caught).

Thanks too to Bev, Greg, and Jane for the interesting discussion of Prairie Falcons and Gyrfalcons up north. I really enjoyed seeing Bev's picture of the man-made scrape in the cliff . . . most impressive!

And as always, thanks to Greg for reporting his sightings of the Wilmington falcons. Those reports have been especially welcome and helpful since the cam froze on August 23.

There are only a couple of records of gyrfalcons in Delaware and none of prairie falcons. I'm sure if either one shows up Red Girl and Trinity will let us know. They are about to get busy defending their airspace in any event. It's time for tundra peregrines, merlins and accipiters to start migrating through, then redtails in another month.

Trinity is on the box.

Got to spend a little time in Wilmington this morning. Pretty sure it was Trinity was perched on the box the entire time. Red Girl was a few floors below the nest ledge and to the left of it. My friend and I missed seeing her take off, but did see her return toward the building, but she continued behind it. We did not see her return. Trinity stayed put the entire time.
