I think this is him skipping around. I don't think that an adult would be having that much fun in the rain.

Remembering 1 year ago today, when Athena really wow'd Bonnie and I on the corner of Greene & Pearl, 2 blocks north of 101 Hudson. Stooped off the very top of 101 Hudson, caught a pigeon on the side of Plaza 5 across the street, and circled maybe 30 feet directly overhead while "dispatching" the pigeon! First time I've seen a Peregrine make a kill, and it was worth all the near-misses in years prior (in JC and elsewhere).

Posted one of my favorite pics from that morning (horrible lighting and wrong camera settings, but still a pretty neat pic). Link to that gallery:

Another Boss sighting after 5 p.m. After the 2nd pic, he walked over and knocked the parent off it's spot on the ledge :teehee:

It does explain the fertility problems Bonnie.
Mike, most people never get to see a falcon stoop, and it is an amazing thing to see. A sight you never forget!

Welcome zev, we are glad to have you here!

First, welcome zev and thanks so much for that video. :welcome

Catwoman, so cute, boss sitting there on that little platform the adult is usually on.

Mike, I sat here for several seconds staring at that amazing photo, but I hadn't read what you wrote and I was thinking, that's an awful lot of feathers. :duh: But not for two birds.

obxbarb, yes it certainly is a sight to behold!

LOL ljames, yea the trailing pigeon does throw off the general shape of the falcon. Would make for an interesting window silhouette decal! :teehee:

I hope you get to see a stoop someday SGB, it's amazing how much distance they cover in such a short period of time. Easy to see how prey, at least sometimes, never knows what hit it!

Bonnie and I were in JC from 10 a.m. to noon, watching from the 7th floor of the parking garage at Plaza 4A, a block NW of 101 Hudson. Got to see Boss hanging out on the ledge 3 parapets east of the box. He did some flappercising and skipping along the ledge, screamed at his parents, and dozed off a few times.

He then went to the next terrace around the corner from the cam when an adult landed nearby. By the time we left, he had either hopped down to the roof of that terrace, or went back to the main terrace by the box. Saw both adults and they did some flying (got to see at least 1, maybe eventually both, adults do some high-speed flapping westward; always nice to see those wings in action!).

Photos were tough, lots of haze to shoot through. We'll go through them and see what we can post later!

Here are a couple of my pics from this morning. More are on Flickr:

The Boss flappercising on the ledge east of the box:

Boss watching his parents in flight (he blends in so well with the building, it was tough to spot him with binoculars!)

One adult flying west past us, followed by the second:

While I was typing this, Boss appeared on camera! He spent a few minutes picking up scrapes around the nestbox, and was toying with one near that metal plate. A little tough to see, but that's him in front of the box (probably Athena perched above). He has since walked back out of camera view, probably going to the small terrace around the corner.

Great pictures of the Boss and his parents! Thank you for sharing them!
And I liked the video made by zev a lot.
But now I am constantly humming that song . . .
    Doo-dloo-doo-doo-doo
    Doo-dloo-doo-doo-doo-doo
    Doo-dloo-doo-doo-doo-doo
    Doo-dloo-doo-doo-doo-doo...

    I'm singing in the rain
    Just singing in the rain
    What a glorious feelin'
    I'm happy again
    I'm laughing at clouds
    So dark up above
    The sun's in my heart
    And I'm ready for love
    Let the stormy clouds chase
    Everyone from the place
    Come on with the rain
I've a smile on my face
    I walk down the lane
    With a happy refrain
    Just singin',
    Singin' in the rain

    Dancin' in the rain
    Dee-ah dee-ah dee-ah
    Dee-ah dee-ah dee-ah
    I'm happy again!
I'm singin' and dancin' in the rain!

I'm dancin' and singin' in the rain...

Thanks Beth, and LOL DEF, it was a fitting theme for the past 2 days!

Interesting Nestbox News entry last night (didn't see it until this morning):
http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/peregrinecam/jcp-2013nestnews.htm
June 18, 2013, 8:30 p.m. - An Adventurous Soul
Those watching the falconcam this evening may have seen some nice action.

Our fledgling was definitely feeling the north wind after the rain stopped for a few minutes. Perched atop the parapet wall over the nest box, he spread his wings and felt the wind through his feathers. He flapped, then flapped some more, and lifted off. An inch or two, then more, lifting off the ledge with legs hanging! He kept at it for 10-15 minutes, flapping, jumping, and several times lifting off and hovering in place above the wall. We can only imagine the feeling of being raised by the wind. (For those who are older, we might recall the opening scene of "The Flying Nun," angling into the wind and being raised up!)

Fledgling 44 was joined in the corner by mom, who seemed to be enticing him to join her in the sky by taking brief flights in front of him. She finally jumped down to the roof below, leaving him to perch and run along the ledge, looking down (presumably) toward her. This seemed like a lot of activity after an afternoon of heavy rains; perhaps they all had some pent-up energy to release!

I was only watching stills yesterday evening, but had saved these 2 that the above entry explained for me. In the first one, looks like Boss is on the spotlight in front of the box (if you look real close, you can make out the tan tail-tip band that juvie's have). The 2nd pic an hour later has 2 birds perched by the box (one on the top perch, the other partially out of view on the parapet). At the time I was wondering if it was both adults, or if one was Boss. Sounds like Boss was in fact one of the birds there! :ohyes:

The Boss definitely enjoyed 'Singing in the Rain.' And I liked the video, too. Must have felt good on his new feathers. Most of my pictures are the same as Mike's, but here are a few that might be a little different.

The runway:

Flaps down:

The plumbing works:

Both Athena and Six watch over The Boss from up top:

Why we can't see him on cam - he easily hops to the small terrace:

Thanks team JC! Great shots and those are super tall buildings. It's amazing that they generally fledge so well here when you consider the environment.
