I finally found what I was looking for about hormones and why we can't always expect these new birds to just pick up with incubation/feeding or whatever...(now I need to find the rest of it)

Thanks SGB, we've had several sites here where a new male came in was pretty much useless so I get where you are coming from. Stormin here didn't do much to help Haven at all at Y&E from what the watchers told me, she raised those babies on her own. All he wanted to do was play!

Stream just crashed on me...grrrr.

I wish I had read it at the beginning of the season...then maybe I wouldn't have gotten so Frustrated with Cher and the other nests where takeovers had occurred. there is more to it that what is mentioned...that's the part I have to find..Somewhere I read that visuals on eggs/chicks will at times trigger production of the correct hormone..that hormone triggered with instinct kicks in..I guess that's what has happened at Wilmington..and certainly did not happen at Zwolle several years ago.

So true, Carly...

But, that is a very cute pic of B. She is not gonna allow herself to starve. Sadly, if she has to sacrifice the eggs for her health, she will...

Great coverage today. Thank you!

I'm sorry that DC hasn't been located. That has me very worried.

just checking in. A few quail would be nice about now.

We experienced new tiercel last year, Chase. he was useless for a long time. then he started hunting.

this year he is doing goo d job.

I think if they are mature , when they take over like 3 years ago at our site, they know more what is expected. First nesting is a challenge for a lot. they are all so different.

If this one is to stay, he wont be doing too much till he knows all is safe and so maybe DC is still around. Survival.
After that , let us hope he goes near eggs a lot to stimulate hormones. Chase did no incubation last year, no brood patch, but hormones kicked in enough for him to hunt and did start feeding a bit later, but in big scheme of things was useless. Not his fault

Tiercel at San Jose last year came in just before last egg was laid so he had more time to get stimulated. took him awhile to get going, and so Clara carried the load but he eventually incubated and turned out good. All in timing

I think the best B can expect is food. After all he will eventually court her if he has truly won.

so come on angels and provide B with some larder

I am happy tears. See B knew something we did not.

That is second falcon they were reporting earlier. I had posted tweet earlier in day. one falcon flew with B to box and another on a building. Cannot remember exactly.
