Went down to the site last night. Bev had not seen green all day. But, saw a falcon fly onto a building near by and when it came off of it, R went flying off in that direction. I was the only one with eyes on it, Peter did not have enough time to scope it. So, we can not say if it was her or not. Bev and I walked the buildings to the north of the site . They are many smaller buildings that she could hide on. As long as R is on the alert, then there is hope that R, didn't down her. and maybe Chase is helping her out. Last year he was at the nest site all the time after we could not find Fiest and R was gone all the time. So, maybe the tide has turned and Chase is with Green training her. One needs hope .

Peter an d I went for a n early morning look. Still no Green. About 8am R appeared on her perch.

We also went to Weber but men wee working on roof so Miss E and her man were across on Ramada. no sign of any kid or kids. I think the young one there may have left area.

I have to come to terms with the fact , I may not see her again but it does not mean anything has happened to her. Am I feeling down , yes, but she is a strong girl.

Gord said she needed to fly to take off some weight and in doing this she may be stooping and starting to get independence. We do not know if she caught anything before she was in rehab, As we could not see what she did when away from site. I can tell you, that while on site, while we were watching, she stooped everything in sight. LOl

On sunday she did stoop a magpie in front of Peter , but came low, so had to fly off. My hope is that she can get smaller birds , or some scraps , or she sneaks in at nihgt. And there are still lots of dragon flies out there. 7 of those are enough for a day of protein.

Jean said that on Sunday night ,(after Green was dive bombed by R and we believe, was chased out to north, after we all went home at Dark,) Jean heard a ruckus outside her window. (9:30pm) She looked out and R was still on her antenna and the young one was chasing Chase around College plaza , yelling at him. then no more yelling so she thought maybe they landed on south face of CP. She knew it was the young one chasing Chase and not vice verso , as she was big.
this gives us hope.

Was this the right move to release her. I am not the expert. I would not have because of the time of year( so close to migration) and I was almost 100 percent sure R would reject her.( it was too long a span away). I di d nto think she was independent at 3 weeks. But she is over 6 weeks fledged now, so who knows.

But I do know that Gord is passionate about his falcons and would never intentionally cause one to be harmed. He has always done what is in the birds best interests. She wanted to be turned loose. this was her best chance at flying free. You had to see her , to see she was raring to go.She took off from the roof an d looked amazing.
She is beautiful, and strong and so we have to think she has Radissons genes and Radisson disappeared from her area 5 days after fledge. Radisson may been fed elsewhere( who knows) but Tracy never , saw her again and thought the worst.

So we will continue to monitor as much as we can. and I will pray for the best.
As soon as I wash my head bone. I will work on pictures.

I will post a few and then you can look in gallery

sept 12 U of a

we were down yesterday from about 6pm till 8:30pm

We saw 3 falcons at one time. I went out to scout north end of campus from Ed parkade and there was a big falcon quite a ways down on an unfinished building on a beam. It was big , so I got to where Peter was an d we figured we would drive to north end and walk in from there and get a close look. As we were pulling out of Ed parking lot, I heard chupping and jumped out of car( lIterally) . Peter thought he also heard a youngster.

I saw Radisson fly over my head and as Peter was holding up traffic he proceeded to a parking lot a bit south. He saw Radisson on Med science building and while I was waiting at lights , I saw Chase on CP , eating. but as I had Chase in view and Peter had Radisson in view, another falcon was circling above Radisson. maybe Green???

It gently swooped R and R just did a bit of chupping. It did this a few times and then flew North. Peter took best picutres he could becasue of sunlight. When I got there it was gone and as Peter was taking out scope ,R left. We did not see where, so I mosied back to ed parkade. nothing in sight.

Jean joined us later on parkade by nestbox. We saw a falcon flying over by red apartments and then by Mckenzie building and then down . It may have been Green , we could not tell becsue if shadows and light. It looked dark underneath, but???.

I sent Gord our bad picutres of the one over RAdisson and Gord said it looked like juvenille plummage. no signs of molting. We are hoping it was Green.

Here are some bad photos
well I will be back with them Pb is just terrible . I am e-mailing them an d expressing my thoughts about their new and improved site this year. :furious: :furious:

So interesting that you saw 3 at once...I hope one of them WAS Green...and maybe R & C are warming back up to her?

Loved the "falcon whisperers"...LOL

AND...you and Peter MUST stay out of the road!!!

I am really trying to get better at staying out of traffic LOL

I just go and think later. Peter says he has to find a better insurance provider :teehee: :teehee:

It was very warm yesterday so no action. r was tucked in on ledge staying cool when we got there yesterday. We saw Chase come in later and they were both at box.

We did go around back end of campus yesterday but no cigar, but as I said it was 30C here yesterday and nothing was moving

I have been taking some time to gather my thoughts , as I have found it rough this season.. I will be going to both sites today and will have a few reports by thursday evening. then we are leaving for my haunts in Crowsnest Pass and then to Vancouver Island to see my dad . I have been holding off going as I wanted to see my falcons before I left. Never know if they will come back.

I had to go back and could not believe I had not posted pictures from Weber. All will be done. so sorry. I got so busy with my other life. :girlcrazy: :girlcrazy:

Give my love to the Crowsnest Pass and the Island -- two of my favourite places.

It has been a rough year, but you have been a real trooper. You have a huge heart, Bev. Enjoy your time away.

It is late and I am going to try an post as much as I can before I take off in morning.
thanks Carol for kind words.

I am looking forward to getting away to my old haunts. They are my comfort zone, my soul. I reconnect when I go back to the mountains and Vancouver island. It is like a cleanse.

Pembina

I posted of my first visit to Pembina but the second visit was a little piece of heaven. We had Jean and Barb with us and got to Pembina at 7:30am and stayed till after 5Pm.

Steve( the falconer ) spent the day with us. We went up to see the hack boxes. One falcon had been sleeping close to the ground and flew off when we arrived. Steve said they like it up there. What a view from up there. This is what the falcons imprint on when they are in the box.

We then went back below and walked the river , looking for falcons. We only were able to spot a few. Steve had Gords super scope. Put mine all to shame but what a view with it. You could read the band numbers.

We just sat and enjoyed the tranquil morning and walked and looked.

At noon we went with Steve to feed the falcons at the hack box. He has had to trap a few of the captive bred ones , so he said they wait till he is away from box and area before they come to eat.

They just kept coming out of the woodwork, so to speak. They flew out of spots, where we were looking before, but could not see them .. They camouflage so nicely. They were flying around in front of us and then landed in the famous tree. Steve would write down the band numbers as he saw them. He kept good track of them on his computer , to see who is still around. We did see our girl from the Weber and we do believe we saw our black band. Never did get to check with Steve , to confirm black band We saw the girl they rescued from Red Deer. the were gorgeous. Gord told us to look at coloring and we knew what he meant. so many different colors . just astounding.

We had 12 to 13 in view at once but they kept darting in and out so I am sure we saw over 20 .

There was a lot of food but when one would fly off with a piece , it would get chased. That was fun to watch . They would fly upside down with talons out to grab the prey. Sometimes successful. ( Just as you would see them chasing after adults at urban sites)). It shows this is pure instinct.
They would go so close to ground and cliff sides but you know what , no streets or buildings to worry about. If they land on ground , they can work their way up. But these guys were all flying like pros. You could hear their wings as they flew past.

We went back down to river and watched from there. What a treat. Two were feeding in the brush by the water. I had to use scope to see them.

Then one of females came flying by with a quail and she got chased by about 4 others. They ended up the side of cliff. She mantled as the others tried to take it. but she won out and then they took turns eating after that . that is the fascinating thing,
After they sort out who gets first dibs, they share. Some were sunning then selves after they got stuffed LOL , some sat in trees., some hid in trees and parts of cliffs. Their chatter was sweet music.

What a magical day. Did not want it to end. We had a visit with Steve's falcon also. He bought one of the captive bred ones. What a gorgeous girl. He has 4 falcons of his own.

We took him to supper after and then headed home. We saw the female adult falcon that was nesting under a road bridge , we saw a nest of ospreys and hawks.

the highlight for Steve was seeing a male yearling hanging out at the pembina and taking an interest in the scrapes. He was trying to Id it. they will be checking closely next year to see if any are nesting. And they will also be checking for a new location to hack from. Cannot flood the same area with too many. they like to hack males as they tend to come back to area , where females wander more.

I will post a few of my favorite shots and then you can look at my gallery. Some of the picutres of them flying are blurry because camera focused
on trees.

Weber and U of A

to do these two justice I will post a final write up when I get back in mid Oct. Hope you do not mind.( with photos)
sept28
We saw Radisson on aerial tonight. Met up with Jean. But at dark, we had both turned in so as of today , Both are still around. I expect Chase will migrate any day now. I expect Radisson to go next weekend.

We have only seen Miss Edmonton since Tuesday so male may have gone. He was new this year so I do not know his habits as well. the young female we had here did well . Very strong and we last saw her on Sept 2, but we know she was around for about a week and a half after that as we saw the adults watching from different posts ( you learn where the young are if you watch the adults)

I have lots of thoughts and some final touching picutres( some collages but I have run out of time. ) Because of my love and admiration for these two females, I will do a final write up when I return.
I always find this time of year quiet and sad in a way. We never know who will return. I did bid then good bye tonight and so I will go on my retreat and see you when I get back

We loved watching the Edmonton peregrines this past summer! Next year, Alberta Conservation Association is hopefully going to make the experience even better - hopefully more cameras including one for another peregrine nesting site, night vision, and more. If you enjoyed these beautiful birds being a part of your life this past spring and summer, consider donating to the peregrine project: http://www.ab-conservation.com/go/default/index.cfm/give1/donations/. :loveshow:
