Update on the Decorah Juvenile Eagle June 27, 2014~

Yes, surgery is possibly scheduled for tomorrow. Kay will take him to the vet and they will take another xray and re-evaluate. The morning rounds are described below:

From Kay Neumann, Executive Director, SOAR

This morning our juvenile eagle is being feisty and uncooperative, which for rehab is a good sign. It is sitting on the edge of the water bowl. He is drinking on his own and his food is staying down so he was hand fed with meds until his crop was full. We will move him to a bit larger area later today with a bath pan as he is acting like he wants to take a bath. Which again is a good sign.

Update on the Decorah Juvenile Eagle June 28, 2014~
Message from Kay Neumann, Executive Director SOAR
"The juvenile eagle is out of surgery. It was not an easy surgery because there was not much bone to connect to on the shoulder end of the humerus. (Versus a break in the middle of the bone.) Dr. Dirks got the pin in and the wing is wrapped and he has woken up from the anesthesia. So far so good."
That is all the news right now. We thought we should post and at least let you know he did have the surgery and he is awake. We will post more details later. Kay is a little busy right now

and 5 hours ago

Evening update on the Decorah Juvenile Eagle from Kay -
He's back in his little ICU room and has had high calorie fluids and a crop of food and his antibiotics. In three weeks we will do another xray to see if there has been enough healing to remove the pin. We should have some pics loaded up for you tomorrow.
SOAR also took in two baby turkey vultures, a screech owl and a very hungry juvie kestrel!

Biting, blood-suckin gnats, blackflies have done the birdies a lot of damage this year.
In the RRP reports it does not seem Decorah eagle parents have been feeding their young.
This is not normal. The RRP reports *could be* flawed, I dont know and hate to guess.
I am not watching Dec cam or blog. I only tuned in when eaglets fledged.

The GSB falcon chick was driven out of the box cuz of gnats, and because box is faulty it fell.
Other birdlings have suffered too.

Check out new puffin chick hatched June 28! :egg17:
I cant start new threads so put it here.

news by SOAR - Saving Our Avian Resources

Update on Decorah juvenile eagle admitted 22 June~
Kay reports that the eaglet still is not interested in eating on his own. Hand feeding continues... which is not a bad thing because he's also getting a mild antibiotic, always good to know the piece of meat you've hidden the anti-b in has "gone down the hatch." Antibiotics will be given for 14 days from surgery, at minimum. An x-ray recheck of the right wing will be done 2-3 weeks from surgery.

Your Top Thirteen Questions For SOAR and Dr. Dirks
Last week we asked Decorah watchers for their questions about the Decorah fledging that went to SOAR. Thanks to Kay and Dr. Dirks for answering them. Next week we'll ask for questions from Bob and Brett about development and fledge, so stay tuned!

Thanks Priscilla - Be mid=July before we know much about the SOAR eagle.
The other 2 appear fine - but - are the parents feeding them?
Last I read humans were throwing them food - I havent had time to follow Decorah.

(time? whats that?)

Am I bluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuueeeeeeeee .......
remember that song? FIRST thing I thot when I saw his blue wingie.
Dont say - poor baby - say - thank God he was found and rescued!

July 3 RRP fb report on the wild fledglings
We know that Dad is regularly delivering food to the juvies. Both parents have been observed making fly-bys and also sitting in a tree on a ridge about a quarter mile southeast of the "mulch pile"
I wondered who FOUR is - thats what they call the fledgling with the satellite transmitter.
I preferred EWT and EWOT - eaglet with and without transmitter! O well.

WHERE will the SOAR eaglet be released?

The veterinarians at the Janet L. Swanson Wildlife Health Center report that #CornellHawks E3 has had a good week. Today they noticed the beginning signs of healing in the bones. There are no visible complications and E3's behavior suggests that he is comfortable. E3 continues to gain weight, has a great appetite, and is casting pellets regularly. In this picture you can see the “figure of 8” bandage around the wing and the body wrap under the feathers on his chest. This technique immobilizes the wing and keeps it in position. There is still a lot of healing to do at this point, making it difficult to predict the final outcome, but last week's setback does make it less likely that E3 will be releasable. As the healing process continues, we know that many of you will have questions about what will happen if E3 is unreleasable. The main consideration would be whether he is comfortable and otherwise healthy, and if so, we would seek the best options for him to be transferred from the Wildlife Health Center to a licensed facility for longer-term care. Thank you for your support and concern. We will keep you posted. Best wishes from us here at the Lab for a good Fourth of July weekend.

I didnt see this posted. I reviewed RRP fb page and saw this.
I have an awful time with facebook! ugh.
I myself watched the owl attack video. It did appear to me it raked the eaglets.

RRP July 2 Q for SOAR on Decorah
Do you feel that the break in his/her humerus was due to the owl attack?
This break is way up in the shoulder area – there is a lot of muscle around the bones there. Owls look big – but they are big puff balls – mostly fluffy feathers. These eaglets out-weigh owls by a lot. There were no puncture wounds near the break area. I don’t think owls could have done this. Dr. Dirks and I discussed this a bit. This break would take quite a bit of trauma – like being hit by a car. But we just have no way to know for sure what happened. His feathers were grown in well enough to glide/fly from the nest, so it is doubtful leaving the nest would have resulted in this type of break either. [Amy's note: Bob made a similar observation after handling "Four", the fledgling formerly known as EWT. He also confirmed that the eaglets were developed enough to fly].

Statement from RRP posted a few minutes ago on FB;

"7-8-14 ~ We are Heartbroken to Announce the Electrocution of our Male Juvenile Decorah Eaglet (EWOT / believed to be D18)

Bob Anderson has released this statement:
"This morning the one young 2014 male eagle was seen soaring high over the bluff near Decorah compost site. We were all impressed by his flying skill. We believe that the young eagle was on his way back to the compost site when he attempted to land on the power pole about 1/2 mile from the compost site. This was a high transmission power pole and the eaglet suffered burns on its wing (wrist) and singed feathers on his feet. The electricity either entered through its feet and out the wing or vice versa, and his wing was nearly severed. We are all very saddened as his flying prowess led us to believe that we would have a long lived male eagle to compliment the data from our famous D1".

You may recall the Decorah eagles D12 and D14 were both electrocuted in 2012, and while many of the power poles around the nest and hatchery were retrofitted, not all poles in Decorah were, and this pole was quite a distance from the nest tree. "

RIP
