Osprey in Distress Sighted in Dunedin
Local bird watchers report an osprey tangled in fishing line near Bayshore Boulevard and Curlew Road this week.

Local bird watchers report an osprey in distress sighted near Bayshore Boulevard and Curlew Road this week.

The bird appeared to be dragging a fishing line with lots of materials attached, according to Sparky Jones, founder of DunedinOspreyCam.org.

"I had a monitor in the area yesterday but we have not had any further tips," said Barbra Walker, of the Clearwater Audubon Society. "The osprey may have picked the line off himself but just in case, if someone sees and osprey on the ground please call me."

She warns not to allow ospreys to sit on the ground overnight because it exposes them to predators.

Walker said the Clearwater Audubon Bird of Prey line responds to calls involving injured birds of prey (eagles, ospreys, hawks, owls and kites), also entagled or possibly electrocuted birds of any species. She said they take the birds of prey to specialty veterinarians and rehabilitation facilities.

The Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary no longer accepts injured birds.
Her organization is not equipped to respond calls about baby birds, duck relocations or seabirds.

The cam has been down (for me several weeks) but today I caught the adults at the nest.

Just found this on FB

Dunedin Osprey Cam

Both were on the perch this evening and Male has some blood on his chest. We will keep watch to see if it's a wound or if he just got blood from a fish he caught. — Was Male wounded? 3-1-13

Kitten, this nest has obvious intruder/territory issues.

Sent you a PM :loveheart:

SGB, it looks like someone tossed a can of something out of a car :gaaaaah: Thanks for observing, a hard cam :loveheart2:

This nest appears to have serious intruder issues, but, not unusual for the area. Barb Walker is aware of the male's injury and will be monitoring for infection.

Barb is also aware of the territory/nesting site issues near this nest, from Barb:

"There could very well be intruder issues and it won’t be for the first time. The last new nesting attempt was 330 feet to the south on a power line. The one before that was 288 feet to the west on a power line. Some of those birds were electrocuted and are buried there. There is at least 1 unused platform just about a half a mile to the north but along the Dunedin Causeway that goes to Honeymoon Island. That is where one of the banded young was hanging out before he was taken by Tropical Storm Debby. We had a great horned owl electrocuted at one of the power lines right by the cam nest too."

Thanks jazzel...I should have saved the video..nope..it came out of her mouth. She ruffled her feathers, leaned forward and let it fly...then stood back up and "licked her lips"..so to speak...strangest thing I ever saw...but, she appeared fine after that...
