The little one was front and center for this feed. Cam has been on and off today so don't know if first feed or not. Female fed for a while and male then took remnent off nest to enjoy!! Little one has darker feathering on back today too!! Hope the deliveries continue so all 3 can survive!!

Dunrovin nest is doing splendidly this season.

No lack of fish with frequent and consistent deliveries by Dad. If the situation continues as is, all 3 chicks should do well.

QQ for you all. The last two feeds today that I saw, the male brought nice size fish, the female comenced a great feed and then the male, on both occasions, reached in and took the remains of the fish off the nest presumably to enjoy himself? Feed was not finished! Both fish were nice size too!! Seems to not be a lack of prey--curious. Thanks!!

jr- I asked a guy who does all the Montana osprey nests on OspreyWatch and this was his answer (he's a great guy!)

i've seen this behavior on a number of osprey cams, so i don't think it's that unusual. this is what the blog at the loch of the lowes nest had to say about something similar just last week (scottish wildife trust folks):

"The ospreys have had another good day, with two fish delivered today so far, both of which were recycled at least twice to the nest. This pattern of the male delivering the fish, then taking it away after the female and chick have fed, then returning with it to offer it a second time, is becoming typical. It shows the males instinct to provide is really strong and that there is more than enough food to go around at the moment."

i don't know if this is exactly what happened at dunrovin , but it sounds pretty close. or maybe dad just decided everyone had had enough and he was starving! i DO know that osprey will remove fish from the nest if there's an eagle hanging around, something i saw with my own eyes, and the fish wasn't in the nest long enough for the chicks to even get one bite!

gosh obxbarb. that's good info!! happened again this morning. watching it's a little disheartening as the little one is not getting as large a feed as the older two. all three certainly look healthly tho. here's a pic right after male took this mornings prey. female is on the right. male flew off with the fish.
how interesting. Thank you for checking. 825 eastern time. we can see the female trying to retrieve.

Just checked back and the first hatch was being very agressive towards #2. Are we seeing this because the prey is removed before feed finished?

#2 submissive. i do not know if #3 was involved before i arrived.

That looks like a shortage of food to me. Hopefully the little one makes it.

Caught a zoom today during a feed. All three are growing. The male again tried to retake the prey but the female decided that was not to be and took the fish back and finished the feed helping herself too!!!
345 Eastern time.
