The following information was originally posted on the HEGPS forum:

HEGPS is excited to announce we have been given the opportunity to install a cam on Gregg's tree to give us all a new view of our beloved Hornby Eagles. This will be very different from what we have seen in the past because the camera is 230' away from the nest. We have purchased a PTZ camera with 37x optical zoom so we hope to be able to show a good view of the nest.

Nothing like this has been done before, that we are aware of, and we don't know for sure what the view will show. We are hoping we can see into the nest reasonably well plus Mom and Dad flying, other eagles in the area, beautiful panoramic view of the area and maybe witness what happens with intruder alerts. We hope to be able to see Mom and Dad perched in the various trees close to the nest and also if there are fledging eaglets we hope to be able to see them flying. The equipment has been ordered - and we hope to begin installation within the next couple of weeks.

We feel it important to recognize the vision of Doug Carrick, who, in concert with the Hancock Wildlife Foundation (HWF), first brought us the Hornby Eagles. Without their vision, we would not have shared in the lives of Mom and Dad Hornby, learning so much along the way. We look forward to continuing to chronicle the lives of the Hornby Eagles.

We appreciate the generosity of the owner of “Gregg’s Tree” and the nest tree land owners, who gave us the opportunity to make our dream a reality. Most important, thank you to all of the fans of the Hornby Eagles, who have been hoping and waiting to see Mom and Dad Hornby again. We are delighted to be able to share this new view of them with you. Please join with us on this new adventure, as we all learn together what view we will have and as we learn to operate the PTZ camera.

"HEGPS will be launching the new Hornby Eagles nest and territory cam on Friday, April 20, 2012 at 10:00 AM PDT.

We appreciate your patience and understanding while we worked on the installation and testing. There are a few minor issues that will soon be resolved, but we have decided to begin streaming so that you can share in the fun.

We hope you will join us in the chat room for this happy event. See you at Hornby!"

Hope you enjoyed the unveiling of the cam. The opening video is still on the site (for a few hours). Some viewers had to refresh their browsers several times. I had the best luck on FireFox. IE was cranky (or was I cranky?) Most of us were up well before 6 AM, PDT, making last minute checks.

You might enjoy these test videos. When you look at the first test video, keep in mind that was Day 1 of the cam streaming and it looks very rough, but this is what we saw. And were thrilled with it!

Some cam-testing videos:

Rainy Hornby Morning (recorded April 16)

Fly In & Fly Out on a Windy Day (Recorded April 15)

Hornby Island Dawn (recorded April 15)

Fly by the Hornby Nest (recorded April 14)

Hornby Shore & Nest – First Cam Test!! (recorded April 10)

Dad loves to arrange the sticks in the nest. But this time it is Mom. It looks like she puts it right on top of Dad. He gets up and flies off, giving Mom her turn to incubate the eggs.

Mom soars through the air, landing in the top of the nest tree. And then she gracefully glides down into the nest. Dad flies out.

April 24: around 3:12 PM PDT

Dad arrives with something in his talons. By the action of his wings, it looks like she grabs it from him. Is it prey? Judging by her vocal response, it can't be a wad of grass. Watch Mom after Dad leaves. Is she eating the prey? Setting it aside? Has the first egg pipped, spurring Mom and Dad to fill the larder?

Best to view it on YouTube, using the large player window.

About four seconds into the video, we see Dad on the bottom right side of the video window, flying left to right over the water. He catches a fish and enters the nest on the left, landing on the prow.

It is really cool that you can see them out over the water like that, love the way he came in so gracefully

6:15 AM PDT (May 20)

She's up early, looking around. And then she settles down under Mom's warm feathers. Very windy this morning.
