April 14, 2017 shepnotes
6.15 am She walked into the box - exactly the same time as yesterday
She fusses around, pebbling
9 am Awhile ago River brot Missy a bird - which she grabbed like she hadnt eaten in a month!
I was pretty surprised. Wish there was a video of it.

Red Wing

I have a theory. First, I suspected eggs would be late because we have a new female, but I wonder if the original male has been replaced and she has had to start all over again with bonding..I've been trying to compare males when I see him, but I'm not watching enough to gather enough information.

I watch a lot
Thats a good theory sky
I'd wondered if there's been falcon fights over the box or the female
I've taken some snips of both
Maybe you can tell something, I cant even tell m from f
http://www.raptorresource.org/forum/ind ... c=2163.180

THOUGHT
I saw the male bring her a bird
he brot it INTO the box
she grabbed it - sudden - fast - stood with it awhile
At the time I thot that odd
Would that contribute to a new male theory?

I think it could!! maybe nervous with the male that brought the food gift?

Who knows what's going on outside of cam view..I've also been toying with the possibility of another female challenging her...she used to just hang out in the box...not so much for a while now...but, of course, I haven't been able to watch very much..

The male was in the box for awhile alone yesterday Apr 17
I got a pic of him
I put a pic of the male March 22
they are on RRP page

She appears to have accepted the cam now

Does she appear an OLD bird to you?

Baltimore is my fav cam - yep - crazy girl
Her eggs were pretty late her first year
because she fought the first female and took her mate and nest
If Amy talks to the Redwing people, they may have seen and heard things -
after all -
FALCONS FIGHTING IS NOISY!

:egg16: A falcon is sitting in the nestbox with prey in its talons, Sleeping?? I'm no expert, but this falcon seems exhausted. Took a bite of prey and shut their eyes again. Band looked like red/black with an X... Red Wing

She/he is moving around.... picked up they prey and moved closer to the nestbox opening. She? Is looking...looking....a peek of the band - a top number looks like probably a seven, but if I turn my head a little, it looks more like a one....

I am sure we have had troubles at this nest in 2017.
Lots of action probably away from the cam.

First egg last year was 4/12

Me too! I looked back on other posts so she is black/black 77... poor gal, I feel sorry for her. But you have to wonder how the other guy looks if Missy is allowed to rest in her nestbox...Or is the male running interference for her?

Thanks for the coverage...Tsusan, we "think" her band number is bl 77/X but this cam makes it so hard to read. She is new for 2017, so I expected the eggs to be late..

Also, she has kept prey in the box with her before and fallen asleep. No clue why she does that..LOL

She is currently hanging out in the box, doing a little dozing and preening...but, she's not in her normal spot...oh wait...she still has her dinner with her and she's nibling.

I don't have any reports of fighting at RWG (although that doesn't mean it didn't happen, it does mean that no one found an injured bird on the ground, since I would get called about it). We have seen males gift females with food in the nest box prior to eggs before - I don't know that I would call it common, but we've seen it at GSB. Maybe some males do and some males don't?

Obviously we don't have a nesting chronology for Miss Canada, although Canadian birds tend to lay later (in general, northern peregrines lay a little later than southern peregrines). She was banded on June 24th, which means she hatched around June 1st (especially given the bander's note about screw worm in her ears, which only happens to downies), which means her mother began laying eggs that year around April 20th - 23rd. So we could still get eggs here. I'll be watching with great curiosity since some studies on passerines have indicated daughters follow their mother's nest chronology.

If I hear about fighting or a downed bird, I will post here!

Shepherd, did Amy share ANY more information about the female? Like WHERE she hatched from? Parents? I would like to share this info with our Canadian members. (I'm guessing that 77/X is correct)

Female was in the nest when I opened it this morning.
