This is what I recorded on May 22...I didn't post it because it wasn't a great recording because my settings were all wrong..I had planned to go back and record a better one, but got distracted.
If you go full screen, you can see the swarming flies.

SUDDEN DEATH
Its appears Death was very sudden, quick

Thanks sky, I am putting my notes here also which I posted on RRP with your video

May 22 at 3 pm
All 4 chicks were ALIVE
They must have died rather suddenly

Lano RRP 4:54 pm May 22
Sadly, one of the little ones has passed. Michelle has been trying her best to keep the bugs away. It looked like it was having difficulty breathing, maybe food stuck?

bugs, gnats, mayflies
did the bugs fly into their breathing, suffocating them?

:help:

RRP FB this morning "We are aware of the two dead eyasses at Great Spirit Bluff and are planning a recovery tomorrow, weather permitting. We believe that
insects may have clogged their nares, causing them to suffocate, but we
can't know for sure unless we recover the carcasses. We will also try to
capture some of the insects while we are down there. We've called them
black flies and buffalo gnats, but blackflies come in roughly 30 species
in Minnesota and it would be helpful to know what we are dealing with.

---------

Its close to banding time,
will RRP band them at this time?

Just so incredibly sad.. :tissue: .they have issues with these flies every year...and I'm not sure if they can do anything about it...I know this is a very difficult nest to reach, but I hope they can go down there and at least clean the box and dust the chicks..maybe it will slow down the flies.

Good for them!!! I hope the other 2 chicks can hold on!! I can see the flies clogging their nares, but then they would mouth breath, which would probably be worse, as they would then inhale the flies.

one year GSB went down in May and replaced the gravel and put vanilla in the box - which is supposed to aleviate the flies

This is one of the sites I check every day at a least half dozen times or more. I thought all four chicks were thriving. This happened so suddenly. Feeling so sad........

ATTENTION all you Falconistas
This is from Lano on RRP today

I have watched other falcon nests and have not seen the deceased eyasses fed to survivors. The few times I have seen failed nests, the hatchling was small, parent removed from nest. In the five years I have watched Michelle, I have not had to see her deal with this as food is plentiful here at GSB.
Do you happen to know what is the "norm" for peregrines?? Thanks in advance.

Sherri Elliott posted this on the DNN Explore site:

Raptor Resource Project would like to express our thanks to all the fans and viewers of the Peregrine Falcon eyasses at Great Spirit Bluff for your thoughts and kind comments at our loss. RRP plans to rappel down to the cliff box tomorrow (5/24) to remove the carcasses, and to hopefully take some samples of the gravel and insects so that an analysis can be completed. We had intended to band the eyasses this weekend, and perhaps that will also be accomlished tomorrow ... we're not sure, we'll have to see how that works out to cause the least stress to the remaining young and to the parents. Here is a link to Amy's blog just posted about the infestation.

I'm not sure there is a norm...some falcons (and other raptors) feed the deceased chicks to the survivors and some don't. I think the "norm" is either way. It will be tough to watch if Michelle chooses to do that. I don't recommend watching that if it does happen.

I've checked the cam a few times today...what's odd is the lack of swarming insects...at least when I've checked..

So sad. Why can't they come up with a time-release natural repellant that can be placed in the box that would not be harmful to the eyases and repel the bugs? The technology exists for time-release air fresheners and material used in pet collars.

As I think about yesterday I don't recall seeing any flying insects! It must have happened when I wasn't looking. :girlsad3:

From the squawkin of the parents,
I think RRP is coming down the cliff
to remove 2 dead chicks

and hopefully examine the other 2 for bugs
and clean that house
