:sum9: :hapdance: I have been watching this site from a distance after the death of 2 chicks and then watched the remaining 2 chicks take a leap of faith from the nest box when the black flies became too much. I've been praying that they fared OK. Well,...today I had a chance to watch the cam and was treated to the best news of the day that everyone here is celebrating...both boys are alive and well, preening, messing around with each other, flying, and getting high on the bluff. I couldn't be happier. Here's some pics from today, Minnesota time.

1:22 pm - Both parents were kekking and upset when a bald eagle perched near the nest box early afternoon.
Image

4:57 pm - Both juvies spotted on the bluff - one is top left and one is bottom right in the grass.
Image

5:13 pm - The two boys were messing around - beaking and poking at each other. The one on the right was more active and eventually took off in flight with no hesitation.
Image

5:15 pm - The remaining juvie seemed a bit reluctant to follow his brother in the air and did some wing flaps instead.
Image

5:17 pm - The reluctant juvie. He eventually took flight when I believe the parents were flying past, possibly with food.
Image

5:22 pm - The circled area is where the two boys were hanging out together...quite high up.
Image

I am so glad the two brothers have found each other and are sticking by each other. It is so nice to watch them in their natural environment. You can really see how their juvie coloring helps them blend in with the dirt and their surroundings. I am so glad they are doing well.

From RRP's FB page:

Raptor Resource Project

Both fledglings were spotted at Great Spirit Bluff today! John was operating the camera when he found Hamilton and Burr-D on a ledge. The ledge provides a great base for flight school, with a nice combination of cover and height for the two fledglings. While black flies might still be a little bothersome, their fledgling feathers, more robust immune systems, and ability to fly away will help protect them from bites. Good luck, Hamilton and Burr-D. It was great to see you again!

Burr-D with stunning close-ups: https://youtu.be/YMG-MmP83l4
Vultures soaring over the river: https://youtu.be/Onbu4-UzSws

I included the vulture video because it gives watchers a great look at dihedral soaring - a useful thing to understand when trying to separate vultures from bald eagles at a distance! Body shape and flight style can be very helpful in bird identification: http://bit.ly/2o5XEjp

Thanks Shep. I had a chance to watch them again today on two occasions and they each have found their own favorite perching spots. Today, Burr-D chose a tree limb and Hamilton chose a small ledge. I don't know if Burr-D is older, but he seems a bit more advanced than Hamilton, making more flights and being more rambunctious and adventurous overall. He is quite the little explorer. It could also be their personalities or perhaps Hamilton is more cautious if he had a rougher 1st fledge. In either case, they are a joy to watch. I am accustomed to watching peregrines in an urban environment. It is so nice to see them in their natural surroundings with so much to explore and play with. Here are some pics from today - Minnesota time.

After a brief fly-about, Burr-D checked in on his brother on the ledge.

Here is where they were located on the ledge in relation to the nest box.

4:00 pm

When I checked on them again in late afternoon, Burr-D was back on the same tree limb as this morning and Hamilton was still on the ledge.

Once again, Burr-D went on a fly about and visited his brother on the ledge.

Burr-D went on another fly about and discovered "home". I don't if he recognized the nest, but he was quite excited by the find. He got down low at one point, as if to dig a scrape. He then found remnants of a bird wing that he nibbled and pounced on. He really had a ball exploring every corner of the nest.

Nadia, my opinion is the opposite.
Ham is the noisy aggressive screamer,
Burr the quiet more laid back one
Its been a pleasure watching them.
They show affection to each other.

That's certainly possible Shep. I only had time to watch 2 hrs yesterday and 1 hr on Saturday. I am seeing a snap shot of the whole day. From what I saw yesterday, Burr-D was doing more fly-abouts and was intent on checking in with his brother on the ledge for some playtime before departing again. Both of them are having a blast playing with the grass, sticks, and loose rock slivers on the bluff. Early yesterday afternoon, I believe there were several fly-catchers feeding on the air just off the bluffs. They caught Burr-D's attention, who watched them intently with that famous head tilt,...the juvie look of curiosity. They are such fun to watch. I won't get to see the cam the rest of the week....so best of luck to both of them on making their way into the world. They have two terrific parents to guide them on their way. :15heartbeat:
