THANKS to Sara we have started this thread early August 2009 because ...
we have a cam now at the training site!

--I believe the link is on in the a.m. hours--

Here is the link for the current-updates now and when they start the migration route...

Operation Migration has played a leading role in the reintroduction of endangered Whooping cranes into eastern
North America since 2001.

The cam is not always on so do not give up. Early in the morning is the best time to watch. That is when they are working with the birds teaching them to fly with the ultralight. Later in the day all you can see is the birds in the wet or dry pen. Sometimes the camera is zoomed out into the marsh where there are adults. This year two adults are usually there and causing some problems because they are trying to "steal" one of the babies. To get all the history of these birds you will need to go back and read the field journey. This is the first web site for birding that got me started which has just kept growing and growing and now there are just too many to keep up with. But I try.

And now the people in the crane outfits (who look like ghosts) are enticing the cranes back into the pen.

The cam is zooming in on the adult pair that are always around the wet pen. This pair were given an egg which hatched but then after the chick hatched it was lost, they not sure what happened to it. They seem to want to take one of these now. All of the chicks are gathered in the dry pen hopefully waiting for the ultralight to come for their morning flight.

If the weather and wind is right yes they try to fly every morning. This goup is one of three groupsthey are training. One group is younger and not getting off the ground yet just running after "mother". I think the other is older. Since they are different ages they do not work with them together until their flying is about equal. Then they have to try to put all three groups together which starts lots of other problems. The birds are not social and do not get alone very well together. They spend a lot of time watching them and trying to socialize them together. Last year one of the dominate chicks actually killed another one hurt another so badly he had to be put down. They eventually had to turn him loose with the adults and hope for the best. He did not survive the winter. got to go get supper finished.
