:15heartbeat: Lady left at 8:16 EDT per chat and so far Steve has not come in. Normally he comes in to incubate for the night within a few minutes of her leaving.

Checking back in at 12:30 am, Steve never came in to incubate tonight. Lady may come in at 4 something this morning to resume incubation.

:dancingegg: Banded female Osprey landed on the BH nest at HI earlier today! She looks dark in this lighting and is a beauty. Wouldn't it be wonderful if this osprey is offspring of Steve and Rachel, although it only has one band and I think they banded both legs at HI!! Footage sent to bander by mod to see if he can make an ID from what of the band numbers can be seen.

:15heartbeat: Steve left incubation a little over 2 hours ago. The eggs are alone most likely for the night till Lady comes in early morning.

:1val: Lady to resume incubation and then Steve both came back to the nest in the 4:00 am hour. So incubation continues in the early morning through the day only here d/t the GHO attacks on Lady and Steve in the night.

:1val: I think Steve left as it was getting dark, so this will be the 4th night without incubation.

:1val:The eggs are not being incubated again tonight. A few hours ago they announced Lady's official name:

Drum roll, Hog Island Osprey Friends!
After a mutual decision between Audubon Hog Island and Explore, we HI moderators were given the opportunity to name Lady, Steve’s new mate, properly. The name is Phoebe, after the famous birder Phoebe Snetsinger. She was an American birder, famous for having seen and documented birds of 8,398 different species, at the time, more than anyone else in history and the first person to see more than 8,000. Her memoir, Birding on Borrowed Time, explores this achievement. She traveled the world multiple times to find birds in their habitats. She was described as having had an excellent memory, and a strong competitive spirit. https://en.wikipedia.org/wi...
A little fun fact: When Lady – err Phoebe – showed up for the first time on April 14 at 1:29 pm EDT, an Eastern Phoebe was singing. Isn’t that a good omen?

:7val: Phoebe :7val:

Can these eggs still be viable after so much unattended time.

:1val: Not unless the osprey know something we don't I guess. Not only are the eggs not being incubated for about 8 hours every night, apparently from chat, they are not turning them as normal either. It's really a shame of this turn of events. This morning Phoebe returned at 3:58 and Steve at 4:48. She left at about 8:00 tonight and he at 8:51. I wonder if they will return to this nest next year or build a new one ...

:1val: Gigi, I hope you see this. It is possible the osprey may know something we do not! And yet there remains the question if they have been turned often enough. I don't think there have been freezing and wet conditions since they quit incubating at night. Tried to find what the temps were at night during this period, but was unable to do so. But possibly 40's - 50's would not be out of the question. For eagles, I vaguely remember Dr. Sharpe mentioning 60's could be too cold for eagle eggs not incubated especially if wet conditions I guess. Don't quote me on this though as I don't remember exactly what he said. Saw this at site here a few minutes ago.

Hog Island Audubon Camp Mod • 2 minutes ago
Many people have been asking about the viability of the eggs and if the pair will lay a second clutch. We asked Don Lyons, our Director of Conservation Science at Audubon, and he provided the following statement:

“While I don’t have personal experience with Osprey eggs, I’ve seen Caspian Tern eggs abandoned for most of the night over 10 days due to coyote disturbance still hatch. The eggs of many waterfowl, songbirds, etc. are pretty resilient to neglect while adults feed, etc. The main issue is if the eggs get too cold (getting wet is often the way this happens). I don't think it is completely out of the question that Steve and Phoebe's eggs are still viable.

To my knowledge, clutches are replaced only if all eggs are lost early on in incubation. Not likely in this case where eggs are still present and viability is not known.”

For now, we will just need to wait and see how it unfolds. Thanks everyone for tuning in!
