:girlsad3: / :girlyes: With no fish brought in today, Iris left a little after 4 PM and returned approx 20' later with a fish. Unfortunately, the oldest chick has bonked the youngest numerous times today and continues to do so. The oldest got the lion's share of the feed. It's crop was huge and the youngest has a small crop now. I was quite impressed with the youngest as he attempted to self feed @ one point from between Iris's talons. There is a very noticeable size difference between the 2 that you can see from some angles. Hoping Louis returns with a fish this eve. They are reporting the river crested this afternoon. Hoping this will improve the fishing here.

Iris left again, possibly to Rattlesnake Creek it looked to me, a little over 30' min ago. Still awaiting her return. I must leave for a few minutes right now.

:girlsad3: I believe Iris was gone about 40', returning without a fish. She left again @ 7:22 PM staying gone about 25' and again returning without a fish. The chicks are calling for food. Eventually, Iris broods the chicks as night falls. I think I read on Twitter it was 52 F this morning. From what I can read, Louis has not been to the nest today.

EDIT to add: You may note that Hellgate charted the time Iris left the 2nd time as 9:22, I think they meant 1922 as it was 7:22 PM their time or they just confused their 7 and 9.

Hellgate Osprey are trying to be positive and I understand that. But, I do not think they have full crops. Capture per Hellgate Osprey:

Hellgate Osprey on Twitter says Louis was seen @ 8:30 AM on the nest yesterday, but not seen since. So far this morning, Iris has left the nest twice and returned without a fish. Looks as if the sunny forecast for the rest of the month has not panned out as there is @ least a drizzly rain right now.

At about 3:30 PM Iris returned with a small fish after being gone 40'. She was able to feed both chicks. Louis was spotted on the owl pole with a small fish that he consumed a little after 6 PM. Later during the hour, he came to the nest with a small fish. The eldest chick bonked the youngest once and had the fish for itself. Iris may have consumed some too, I don't know. Iris is off the nest right now. They are saying the long range forecast was wrong about the sunshine for the remainder of the month and are now calling this "liquid sunshine" as they continue to have rain. Also, they have pulled back on the Clark River cresting previous and are saying tomorrow. And so it goes! :girlsad3:

Iris just returned without a fish. Chick #1 still has a nice crop, chick #2 has none. Both are calling for more food.

:taz: No more fish were brought in this eve. From Dalit on fishing conditions here:

Montana Osprey Cams
4 hrs ·
Hello all,
I was driving around Missoula today looking at osprey nests occupancy. I was by the river most of the afternoon and wanted to share with you my observation - the Clark Fork river is HIGH. real high and very turbid. I put my hand right below the water surface and could barely see it. Fishing conditions are far from ideal. They are purely hard. The romantic Montana summer picture of fly fishermen and women fishing on the bank of the shimmering river while ospreys and great blue herons fly above, is not what we have going around. Average discharge for summer solstice is around 6,500cfs (cubic feet per second). It is currently running at over twice that at 16,600cfs!!
Best, Dalit

This is how Hellgate Osprey reported Fish brought in by Louis:

Hellgate Osprey
@HellgateOsprey
Louis swoops in with an early fish this morning! Hopefully the first of many today in Hellgate. https://youtu.be/KRjiV68x6n4

The fish was primarily consumed by chick #1 with Mom getting a few bites, mostly when fins were involved. Chick #2 did not get a bite, that I could see. It was bonked twice by #1 to keep in submission. After the feed was over, Chick #2 begged for food and Mom found some tiny, tiny pieces of scraps that had dropped to the nest floor during the feed and gave them to #2. She sent Louis on his way. Since then, when Mom is not brooding the chicks, #2 continues to beg for food. Chick #1 has a crop and chick #2 has none. Me, I cried. It continues to rain here.

10:48am Louis just delivered a live fish! Iris is going nuts! She's hooting and hollering and mantling the fish - I'm wondering if an intruder followed Louis home???
Hopefully, BOTH chicks will eat.

:15heartbeat:

Added: When the fish was delivered, the chicks weren't sitting close to each other. #2 was on the right side of the nest, #1 was with Iris. Iris brought the fish over to #2 (Awwwww) - but #1 went right over and started bonking #2. Hopefully, there will be enough left for #2...…
fingers crossed.

:sum9: Thanks, bonbon!! Boy, that was difficult to watch initially. Chick #2 got some bites in before being bonked again. Chick #1 ate till it could eat no more. Chick #2 finally got up and had a private feed as chick #1 looked on after he recovered from his coma without interference! Suddenly, chick #2 turns away from feed and had odd look from it's eyes and I was concerned something was wrong as in it's GI system after not receiving food in awhile and too much in short period or a bite of fish didn't go done as it should, food coma, etc.??? In awhile it got up and finished feeding. Crop did not look super big as I hoped, but it has a crop. Both have slept and #2 had a poop shot! So, I hope it is feeling better now. Both are snoozing @ intervals and Iris is shielding them from the sun. Bring us another fish, Louis!

According to twitter, both little chicklets ate :flirty:
They're napping now.... #2 is sleeping on Momma Iris's foot!

:flirty:

Added: Thanks for the great update, Swinwk!

All is well - no more fish deliveries (yet!).

This was posted on the Hellgate twitter about Iris mantling during the last fish delivery earlier today:

"This is mine, you can't have it...
...At the same time, she continued to food beg, flapping, calling, and moving toward Louis swiftly enough that he departed the nest. There are many ways to interpret this exchange, but central is the idea that she is trying to encourage and motivate Louis to continue fishing."

:teehee:

(Swinwk, I'll be in and out - will try to check on our girl when I can!)

Added: 2:05pm Iris left the nest and chicks are up and looking around. Both still have pretty good crops, #2's definitely not as large and #1; they both look good - nice and frisky.

Just clicked on for a quick check
and.....
Iris is feeding #2; s/he has a real nice crop. #1 is lying flat, I missed any bonking but it looks like his crop is so ginormous that's why he's lying down!
Hopefully, if the fish become more plentiful, the bonking will stop (IhopeIhopeIhope).

#2 is so cute, peeking at his sib gobbling up that stringy fishy! :teehee:

:15heartbeat:

Edited
5:35pm Uhoh - #1(?) is on it's back - I hope s/he's not so full that he can't get up...
It's ok - he's fine!

Edited (again): Twitter said that during the feed (above), #1 ate so much that he fell over!!!
:teehee:
