Sad news: chick #3 has perished yesterday after beeing stuck between sticks
in a hole at left nest rim and couldn't free itself lying on its back for hours....

No sign of Clarach at all yesterday but this morning she has returned,
albeit perched by the nest rather than on it.
Nothing else to report at the mo. We'll keep watching

June 9 at 9:51 AM · Sad News

At just before 07:30 our middle chick sadly died in the nest.

We will never know exactly what happened, but the negative reaction to food on Thursday night
was clearly a trigger for what looked like a lack of appetite during the following two days.

We are all devastated at BGGW, but we must move on and concentrate on our other two chicks.
It has been over 10 years since Mrs G had a chick die in the nest, so we have had a good run.

Both in 2006 and 2007 when a chick died in the Glaslyn nest,
Mrs G carried the body over the nest side on both occasions.
We will probably see the same behaviour again.

We open the project as usual today, we will carry on with a brave face
despite our chick from the 50th egg not making it.

"Here we go - in this order Bobby 1-2-3

Bobby 1 - beast of a chick, big head, strong bird

Bobby 2 - feisty, rather naughty, ready to fight anytime

Bobby 3 - astute, small but smart, quick to assess situations

Males, females.. what do you think..?"

It’s been a miserable week all around Rutland water, and we’ve been watching Maya and her brood closely to make sure they’re managing ok in this weather. Osprey chicks are sturdy birds however, and seem to be growing well still despite all the wet weather and wind.

This morning, 33 brought back a large fish to the nest and this was welcomed by a very eager Maya and the chicks, whom she fed for almost an hour! As per usual, the three eldest siblings rushed in to get their fill, and then lay down with full crops, leaving the fourth chick complete access to the food source, and got a good full meal.

Hopefully the weather will improve over the weekend!
