Female osprey 'Lassie' returns to nature reserve
4 hours ago
From the section Tayside and Central Scotland
A young female osprey known as "Lassie" has returned to Loch of the Lowes nature reserve two weeks earlier than expected.
The bird hatched three chicks at the Dunkeld reserve last summer and was last seen on 7 August 2015.
She took over from long-term resident "Lady", who reared 50 chicks there.
Perthshire Ranger for the Scottish Wildlife Trust, Charlotte Fleming, said: "It's great to see the osprey back again."
She added: "Her behaviour is very relaxed and she seems very at ease in the middle of the nest.
"From initial observations she looks in great condition for breeding.

"We are hoping that she won't be on her own for long and are keeping our eyes glued to the webcam to see when the male will arrive.
"I am delighted that our osprey season has started so well already, and have everything crossed for another successful breeding season."
Once extinct in the UK, there are now about 240 breeding pairs of ospreys. The trust does not refer to them by names and Lassie is officially called Lowes Female 15 or LF15.

Across the sea

By Kayleigh Brookes on March 22, 2016

On 20th March, 30 set off around 06:00 and undertook an 11 hour crossing of the Bay of Biscay! 30 usually skirts around the bay and hugs the coast, avoiding a long crossing. Only once before has she flown directly across the bay, and this was on last year’s autumn migration. Based on satellite-tracking data analysis, ospreys generally only cross the Bay of Biscay on their autumn journeys. However, this spring 30 decided to fly directly across, making landfall in France at 5pm on 20th March. This is almost certainly because she felt the need to make up time this year, having been held up by strong easterly winds over Spain, which would slow her progress and also make it difficult for her to stick to her usual course....

On 21st March 30 travelled 95 miles (153km) through France, and last night she was 162 miles (262km) south-west of Paris...

EJ the Osprey returns to Loch Garten RSPB for 14th year running :sum9:
RSPB Scotland is celebrating the return of EJ the Osprey to its Loch Garten nature reserve in Speyside, a full 12 days earlier than it appeared last year.

EJ, a female Osprey, has been a regular resident at the site since 2003 and has raised a total of 23 chicks there to date, mainly with its usual partner Odin.

LM12 returns!!!

Posted on March 25, 2016 by charlotteranger

Fantastic news!!! After waiting patiently for a week for her partner to return, we are extremely excited to announce that LM12 has arrived back at the nest. He touched down at 11:20 this morning and despite not receiving the warmest of welcomes, we have already witnessed an attempted mating.
