Dyfi Osprey Projekt 7 Mai 2017:

Yesterday's Intruder: A massive female osprey, unringed (what a shame!), thick legged and dark chested. We can see evidence of the same secondary feather moulting on both wings (flight feathers usually moult in symmetrical pairs), but all the other feathers look in pristine condition. Maybe this is a two-year-old bird just returning back to the UK for the first time as an adult? The time window is exactly right for 2015 returnees.

This huge female caught both Monty and Glesni by surprise. Ospreys build relatively flat nests so they can see intruders and predators approaching, even when sat down incubating - if this intruder were a goshawk or eagle, the outcome could easily have been very different. This female flew low and fast from the south, gaining height at the very last minute; in a second it was over, she was on her way.

It is extremely unusual for two experienced ospreys, both situated on or around a nest, not to see another large bird approaching like this.

From Loch of the Lowes blog:

New life on the loch

The countdown has begun, we are now at 38 days of incubation from the first osprey egg. Usually the female LF15 incubates her egg 38/39 days. Now we are very close to D-day and we are waiting with impatience, making sure that nobody disturbs the pair while incubating. This morning a crow came to visit the male on the nest and LM12 began ‘mantling’, a specific posture designed to cover the eggs and protect his nest.

Rutland, UK: Some sad news…By Holly Hucknall on May 15, 2017

It has been an upsetting day at Lyndon today, as we arrived this morning to see no movement from one of our chicks. Our volunteers in Waderscrape called first thing to let us know there had been no sign of life from the chick all morning, despite the other chick being fed – not a good sign...

Looking back over the footage, we did notice that when the chicks are exposed at 8.30pm, Maya seems to accidentally stand on one of the chicks as she settles back down on the nest – the chick seems to bounce back from this, and Maya has her talons carefully tucked under, but this may have done more damage than it first seemed.

We can’t know for sure if this is the reason the chick died, as we don’t know how much weight Maya placed on it – at this stage the chicks are still very fragile and unfortunately there are a number of things that can happen to end a young chicks life. We are of course devastated by the loss of this chick, but for now we take comfort in the fact that the remaining chick seems healthy and strong.

Two on the nest once more, By Holly Hucknall on May 16, 2017

We are delighted to report some happier news today – we arrived at the centre this morning to chick number 3! It’s not clear exactly when the chick hatched, as 33 has recently added a few sticks to the front of the nest, but we got some great views of it at around 5.50am. Here it is a bit later, being fed by Maya.

:redface While Lassie does not realize in this video that she has a Tawny Owl on the front rim of her nest looking @ her ... eventually she sees it flying above and gets upset, but I can"t find this part on video!

Video by Scottish Wildlife Trust

This is the first time this season I can actually see the nest on cam! :flirty:

Dyfi, Wales: DAY 37 - As hatching time gets closer the excitement is mounting here at DOP. All eyes are on the eggs for the first sign of a crack. Glesni has had a quiet night, but she can clearly feel and hear her first chick trying to emerge from her egg.

Read on the blog for Lowes, they believe the 2nd chick hatched is from the 3rd egg.
They are unsure if the chick that hatched 1st is from #1 or #2 egg. They continue to watch for a possible hatch from the remaining egg. There is a TREMENDOUS size difference between the 2 chicks! :shock
