- Berthyn Going Nowhere -

DyfiOspreyProject ~ 4 hours ago, am 30.08.2019 veröffentlicht

We've just popped up the road for some internet...

Berthyn is still here as is her personal fish-deliverer, Monty.

Very high winds, lots of crows and it's starting to rain.

Could this be the last time we see all four of the Glaslyn birds together this season?

We last saw Mrs G in the Glaslyn valley on this date last year, the 2nd of September.
She has been seen on the nest this morning, before flying off towards the estuary.
Has she gone fishing? Or have we seen her for the last time this year?
We'll have to wait and see.

The Dyfi, Wales season has come to the end: My final post

Both Berthyn and Monty still with us this morning - 5th September. Today's a big decision day for our ospreys...
we have high pressure over Wales with gentle northerly winds, perfect for migration.

The urge to fly south will be very strong today; should be interesting...

6 September 2019

As the sun sets and the shadows lengthen this evening,
this is our final, nostalgic photo of the nest taken through the shutters of the Observatory just now.

Monty and Berthyn have almost certainly gone.

We last saw both of them yesterday morning - they may well indeed
have taken advantage of the good migration weather on Thursday morning.

It's been an amazing season. We're taking this weekend off - the first since early March -

and we'll be right back at 'ya next week with a blog, video and updates on the Dyfi Wildlife Centre.

But for now we say goodbye to our ospreys for another season.

So long and thanks for the fish.

Bon Voyage.

Happy St David’s Day to all Glaslyn Osprey followers!

Despite the wind and rain, there are signs that spring is on its way. The snowdrops and daffodils are in flower, the frogs are spawning and already the birds are singing and finding mates before they start building their nests. Of course, spring in the Glaslyn Valley means only one thing! It heralds the return of our magnificent Ospreys.

To celebrate St David’s Day, we are launching our Annual Live Streaming Appeal. We had planned to switch the nest camera on early this year to coincide with the launch, but while we were testing the system we discovered a fault. At the moment we do not know whether the fault is related to the terrible weather and flooding we are currently experiencing or whether a piece of essential equipment has failed. We will keep you informed of the situation. You can rest assured that we will be working hard over the next few days to ensure that the fault is fixed and we will switch on the nest camera as soon as possible to make sure we don’t miss any unexpected visitors to the nest – be it a raucous raven or cheeky squirrel or an early osprey! We will be prepared for that special moment when our iconic Mrs G lands on the nest for her 17th breeding season, with Aran not far behind her!

:1val: At about 12:37 or 12:38 am CDT, while I was reading the forum for Loch of Lowes I heard a bird land on the nest and went back to the cam to see a heavy necklaced female. Within a couple of minutes or so, I think Laddie landed on the nest with his back to us and mantled never turning around and then he flew. I am in no way certain of my ID'S and am unsure if this is Lassie or an unknown female. She is banded. If this is Lassie I have not seen any report of her arrival previous. He returned again with the same behavior (mantling) at 12:47 am CDT. He left within a minute or two. From his behavior, I do not think this is Lassie. Back again at 12:51 with his back to us and mantling and shaking his wings. He flew again after about a minute. He never faces us. She has a blue band. He's back again at 12:56 lying on the nest with his back to us and mantling. This female is not Lassie. He stood for a few seconds and flew and right back for a touch and go on the nest. He is obviously upset. Back again at 1:01. And he flew at 1:02 and right back. He flew off at 1:03. He's back at 1:06 and mantling while lying down. He flew at 1:08. And back seconds later. He flew at 1:09. Have been able to read the forum in between Laddie's coming and going and this female showed up early afternoon on the 28th. Her blue ring indicates she is from Scotland, but numbers have not been clearly read as yet per forum. Possibly NC0. Lassie is not banded. He's back again at 1:20 with a clump of moss and then mantles in another spot. He finally faces us and he flew up and partially landed on her at 1:23 and then landed elsewhere on the nest before flying off again. She just stands on the nest and looks at him when he's there. She seems very calm about the situation. Cam op took control of the cam a few minutes ago, so maybe an ID later today. He is back at 1:26. He worked on the sticks around the nest and flew at 1:27. She does talk to him. The new cam gives a very clear view of the nest and it is beautiful. He's back again at 1:34 and lying on the nest. Then up walking around flapping his wings and to the rails and flies. Back at 1:38 and he lands on her and mates ... Okay, I'm outta here and will check back later to see if they ID this female. Okay I didn't leave and a 2nd mating at 1:45 am CDT ... He's gone at 1:46 and so am I!

:1val: From Loch of Lowes blog (videos at site):

The new bird on the block
Yesterday afternoon just after 12pm a ‘mystery’ ringed female appeared on the nest. This morning she was kind enough to give her a very clear view of the blue darvic ring on her left leg ring, allowing us to ID her as NC0. Osprey expert Roy Dennis’s has told us that she is a young female, ringed in either 2016 or 2017 in Easter Ross, and we’ve contacted the ringer to see if we can find out more.

LM12 and NC0 have spent a bit of time together today but they don’t seem too sure of each other yet. Our breeding male LM12 has been showing mixed signals, displaying a lot of defensive mantling behaviour, but also trying to mate with NC0. So far she has not seemed impressed with these amorous attempts, or by being presented with clods of grass rather than fish!

More birds are appearing around Loch of the Lowes. This afternoon an osprey, possibly a male based on the chest markings, dive-bombed the nest at high speed. You can see how close it comes to a clearly startled NC0.

Many people have been asking whether or not our regular breeding female LF15 will come back this season. She has arrived at Loch of the Lowes as late as 31 March (in 2015) before, so it is still too early to rule out her return. One thing is for certain, if she does return then things could get very interesting indeed!

:shock Kayaker on the Loch of Lowes about 8 and 1/2 caused NC0 and Laddie to fly off each with their own fish! Can still be seen on the DVR here. And the Loch's response:

Loch of the Lowes Visitor Centre and Wildlife Reserve
3 hrs ·
Following an incident this afternoon where disturbance by a kayaker caused the ospreys to leave their nest for over two hours, we'd like to remind members of the public not to approach or access the reserve at this time.

Our reserve is monitored 24 hours a day, including by CCTV. Access to the loch and surrounding areas of the reserve is not permitted from March - September during the breeding season. Due to years of persecution from which they are still recovering, ospreys are classed as a Schedule One species.

They are legally protected from any kind of disturbance, including during the critical period of nest building and pair bonding. Please help support the recovery of ospreys in Scotland by letting nature go about its daily business, and staying away from the loch during this critical time of year.

Please enjoy following all the latest developments on the nest on our live osprey webcam.

Edit to add: Also, this afternoon NC0 was dive-bombed by a 3rd osprey and Laddie can be seen flying in immediately to the nest to defend possibly.

:1val: NC0 showed up at the crack of dawn to the nest waiting on Laddie. He greeted her from the air with a mating at 6:25 nest time. There have been 2 more attempts at mating by Laddie ... one through a small fluff delivery he was bringing to the nest! He's back again with a stick and mantling. No definite sightings of Lassie's return from migration as yet, but some are wondering if it was her that dive-bombed NC0 on the nest yesterday. In the meantime, it looks to be another fun-filled morning with Laddie's antics and anxieties ... :teehee:

:1val: NC0 Is still on the nest with Laddie. Now they are saying they think the osprey doing the dive-bombing of NC0 on the nest is a female, but unable to tell if it is Lassie or other female osprey/ospreys. They have video of the incidents on their blog here with slo-mo. From the latest blog:

NC0 stands her ground on the nest!
At this time of year there are many ospreys travelling through the country, both returning to their nest or establishing new nesting sites. This means we often see an increase in ospreys making a play for the nest and “dive bombing” any osprey sat on the nest.

NC0 appears to be getting comfortable on the nest at Loch of the Lowes, and on at least three occasions has stood her ground against, what we believe to be, female ospreys making a play for the nest. It is difficult to determine if these incidences are the same bird or multiple different birds as the intruding osprey appears to be un-ringed. As the incidences are often very short we are unable to identify whether this is LF15 or another bird.

We’ve pulled together this footage from around 5pm 30th March and slowed it down. Who do you think it is? Has LF15 returned??

:1val: Still no Lassie ... From the blog:

51st year of Osprey arriving at Loch of the Lowes
On 21st March, LM12, our ‘resident’ male osprey, flew back on to the nest at Lowes.

His arrival, the 9th year for this incredible bird, marked the 51st year of osprey choosing to spend their
breeding season in Scots Pines beside our protected freshwater loch. As LM12 returned on 15th March last year (2019) many of the regular volunteers and staff lost any chance of a prize (there is no prize – just a certain satisfaction) in guessing his arrival date.

LM12 found the Lowes nest looking decidedly scruffy! This was immediately attended to by bringing in new twigs and branches, scraping (like a chicken) with his feet at some of the most stubborn tufts of grass or simply plonking large sticks on top of the luxuriant green growth to squash it down. Within days, he’d managed to create a slightly raised, nest shaped circle, and would lie down in the very middle, appearing to rock from side to side while his legs and talons dug out a deeper ‘cup’ to hold future eggs. Then came moss and clumps of dried grass to fill in amongst the uneven floor of sticks, so it was soon obvious he wasn’t staggering around with sudden holes opening below his feet.

A week later, 28th March, while he was in the process of ‘nestoration’, a female osprey flew onto the nest! This was not his usual mate, LF15, this was a bird we had never seen before. Looking a little hesitant at first but healthy and alert, she had dark brown plumage, a very striking dark mask over her eyes and a broad brown/speckled necklace (or like a mayor’s chain) across her breast. Happily, she was ringed: NC0. Our new female osprey on the loch was ringed and fledged from the Loch Ness area in 2016.

LM12 received this newcomer with mixed feelings. He would turn his back on her, mantling defensively, or ignoring her, but then, prompted by her begging calls, bring a fish in to the nest only to struggle to keep a hold of it while she tried to steal it. She is not backward in coming forward and resorted to pecking him on the head when he wouldn’t let go! LM12 and NC0 have been mating, frequently, and while some attempts have clearly failed, several have been successful.

On Thursday 2nd April, it was extremely windy across Perthshire with 48 mph gusts battering the nest. This caused LM12 no end of trouble as he valiantly tried to mate with NC0, 80ft up a Scots pine with the wind pushing and blowing him and his carefully laid nest sticks all over the place!

As I write, there has been no sight of LF15, although she might still arrive on the nest. Who knows what the next few days will bring in this unpredictable season, we will all just have to wait and watch.

Please be reassured that the ospreys at Lowes are under rigorous surveillance and protection despite the current lockdown situation.

Cherry and Amy

Our Osprey Protection Programme at Loch of the Lowes is kindly supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

:1val: At Loch of the Lowes an osprey has landed on the nest just a few minutes ago. It is still dark and I am unsure who this is. It is not NC0 as it has a white chest. Have read on chat that another female has showed up to the nest and altercations continue. The newest female is not banded, but it is not Lassie. Lassie is past her latest arrival date from migration. NC0 was still here yesterday.
