I wonder if he already knows they are not viable.

MN DNR nest

I a m recording last night and today. I am noticing a staying behavior. maybe new male, but is very protective of female. they panned out and saw male was either sitting in tree to left side or to right side.

I am trying to not make comments as some get offended, but just my guess here. the male either does not incubate because it is new male and is protective of area, and will come around eventually or it is old male and is protecting her, when she flies off, or protects area, when she leaves. . just say8ing this as this is what I see with our falcons when there is an intruder around. and I think they have a lot of same habits.
but I noticed male brought in new hay and sticks today .

will do a slideshow today of what I have seen. the eggs were left alone but not for a long time. Female is always watching. the calling when she got up was same as berry when male comes in.

I have not been watching but you almost have to keep cam going to get a clear idea of what is happening.

these are just my observations . everyone has their own ideas.

slideshow with times stamped later today. believe it or not I have a life :girlcrazy: ( just have a recorder on :girlyes: )

I have gone and done my homework.

this male they are naming Mr. Bill. last years male went missing in December. the new male bonded with female and they had 3 eggs and then take over, by this male after territorial dispute. . hopefully other male O.K. in these situations, we know the strongest get the nest.

this male is doing what I would expect in this situation. He is not bonded to eggs but if like falcons at all, he will eventually bond to nest . H e could have destroyed eggs but did not. whether she has been off too long , time will tell. But I have not seen her off for longer than 75 minutes, which is doable.
he has been bringing in fresh hay and sticks. He just brought in a fish which hed id not share but she mantled and eventually stole a piece. He appears hungry right now. but he has left and there is food at nest if mom wants it.

when mom leaves, he leaves with her. also quite common, in this situation. they have mated, so we will see.

I always try ot think positive and hope. but at least there is a pair there. If I have said too much I apologize :sum8:

I have to go out but slideshow will be posted later this evening

here is slideshow.
hope you can see it.it is all o f today. you can see eggs only uncovered for a longer period twice, all day and never more than 70 minutes. male is doing what he should at this point. hopefully if eggs hatch, he will stay with young one s or bring food in. still time for him to get in sinc. it would be nice to see at least one. a legacy to other male. he did bring in a fish which he ate in front of her, but she go t up after a bit and grabbed a chunk and ate. there was food on nest after he left , if she wanted it.
it is a wait an d see.
I will monitor best i can.

march12-

was very impressed here.

female was off once fo r 90 minutes, I figure feed time. other than that, when she was off it was only for minutes. male brought in a fish real early and she grabbed it and left nest with it. this was only time she was gone for longer than a few minutes. she was gone for 8 minutes.when she leaves he leaves, so he has not got idea to incubate yet. but that will come. at least I think it is female incubating all time. I try and look for band.

sometimes you cannot see male but he i sin tree out of sight , to right of nest. so the cam does no t see him bu ti see him go there.( or you see his shadow.

march13
today is even better so far. will post pciutres later. but he brought in a fish again , which she grabbed. so she is more comfortable to do this now.

when I see them call , I am not so sure it is other eagles as he comes in when she calls. He gets real close to her, and normally this would be an exchange . it will come. but she leaves and he follows. they zoom in all the time but they nee d to ask me. LOL

1:05pm- right now she has left after calling him in and he is still there eating leftovers. he sniffed eggs, could not tell i f he rolled them . they are zoomed in. this is time of day she is gone longer( and that is because she is supposed to incubate). he jsu t left to upper branch. there again I saw him go , they did not.he appears ot guard eggs while she is gone.

so it is a wait and see. do not know how long eggs were left before but lengths right now, would d not prevent viability.

so it is a wait and see

if yo u know if they need info. I am keeping track. just do not want to post pages of notes here

here are some photos from march13- I really like this male he is acting as he should. He stays with eggs a bit now, but doe snot incubate. this does not surprise me. sometimes yo u do no t see him but he i sin tree to right . they did zoom there today. they heard me LOl

MN DNR...I too have been keeping track of this nest..just no time to post here....I don't think there is any hope for these eggs...I've checked periodically, late at night, in bitter cold and they have been uncovered. Not only uncovered, but not a bird in sight when I opened the cam...

I didn't wait for the zoom out, but assuming this was one of the males, who left shortly after I took this pic.

MN DNR wed march15- was not as good a day as yesterday as far as eggs go but female now is expecting male to stay with eggs and cover). he brought no food yesterday, so she would have to get her own. so she was gone one long period( over 2 hours) and one a bit shorter(1:30 hours) , but for most part was again , not away from eggs for too long. I did notice male would come back and stand by eggs for a bit. he is just not in that incubating mode yet. he does sort of sniff them and did roll one.
he comes in just after 6am every morning and then they leave together. ( for a few days he brought in fish, I guess this was the courting). if they are at all like falcons, this is normal behavior. have seen this many times at my sites. eggs may not hatch, but it is not because he i s not a good male. just not at right time in his cycle.

I have my recorder running on this nest and Shepherdstown. if I miss something here, I use DVR so covering it pretty well. sometimes they zoom way in and then leave so you can not see much. that is too bad.

will post today's report late nights

did not see your post SGb. I am keeping my recorder up so I do not miss anything

today again, they were two longer periods where she was off eggs.
2 hours first thing morning. male comes in around 6:30ish every morning and they havebeen leaving together last 2 mornings. a few mornings ago, he brought in food an d she ate, but I believe he was courting her ( this we know) so now she has to hunt.
normally we have bonded pair at seasons beginning, and then after eggs female would be relieved by male first thing in morning. Sh e is expecting this. he does come in sometimes and sit at eggs bu t does not incubate. so when she is off, sh e is expecting eggs are being incubated.

there was one more time today where she ws gone for 50 minutes, but other than that, when she left she was never gone for more than 25 minutes, but usually not that long.

these eggs may not hatch, but she is doing her part and for now so is he.

I have full documentation for 4 days for all of this
he is a big male

two longer periods away form eggs ( not quite 2 hours) bu t the rest are doable. male came in after 6am again and they both left for a bit.

male sat by eggs longer today when he did come in after she left, but no incubation by him.

cam was down for a bit
I coudl write a longer report, adn I have it but this will suffice

male rolled egg so it is out a bit

out most of day but it was nice to see male being in fish. he ate some with his back to her and then lifted it over to nest bowl and she immediately took it and got out of bowl and ate. then she flew off with rest and I assume devoured it. male stayed at nest for a bit, rolled one egg LOl

even if eggs do no thatch, it is so nice to see this male progress. he is learning.

will post march17 on march18 a funny vido eto show

female was gone fo r one long period today. but male came in , in that time with fresh hay , stayed a few minutes and then came in again.

he has been bringing in sticks and arranging sticks. so he knows what to do to get nest ready, and that is where he is (IMO)

a lot of times when he comes in they both leave, and then she comes back not long after. do not know if they mate or what. I would give anything to be a fly on the wall so to speak

do not ant to get too involved here. just curious and learning

forgot to post.

we know there will be no hatch here, but I have been learning so much. this young male has progressed so far. yesterday he stayed at nest a whole hour while female was away.

he rolled the eggs but did not incubate. he has been bringing in branches like no body's business. he even walks over female to place LOL

he even brought her a nice snack last night. too late for this clutch but he is very good.

Image

female objected when he dropped stick on her lol

he brings in large amount fo rsnack( at his beak)

female grabs and eats
