Copper Country Houghton-Hancock Lift Bridge falcons were banded yesterday and I missed it. Noticed the bands this morning and inquired on the blog. Here's what I got:

Female 17/Z
Female 18/Z
Male C/57
Male C/62

Let's hope for good fledges and no one ends up in the water!

Update: Found the following news article published July 2 that gives names for the Lift Bridge falcons, but doesn't match them to band numbers. Finnish words were selected: The two females are Silta (bridge) and Kesa (summer). The two males are Vesi (water) and Lumi (bridge).

The Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge falcons were named Bones (f), Zoey (f) and JC (m), named for John Collins, the first president of the Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Chamber of Commerce.

Dear sweet Louie. He was an amazing Dad. I will always remember him taking care of the two little eggs after his mate died. And then some time late his new mate laid 3 eggs. And all 5 Hatched. It was one of the most beautiful things I've see at these nests. I wish that we could have seen him at the nest site raising his chicks one last time.

:taz: Rachel returned to the nest at Hog Island after banding of chicks (male and female) with a left leg injury. Go to site for video of Rachel's return and Dr. B's commentary of both events.

Turns out there are 4, as of July 9. The mother covers the eggs when she leaves.

Hi Beth,

I posted on June 24th about the chicks that hatched in Brandon. I don't have specific dates but probably started about June 8 or 9th. I don't see it in the nesting calendar.

Once again there is very sad news from Hog Island. Dion a male and the youngest of Rachel and Steve's two chicks was taken through the night by a GHO! :sorrow: Dion!! I also want to report that Rachel has resumed fishing and bringing them to the nest this week to feed the chicks, even though I suspect the injury she received to her left leg a couple of weeks ago or so is actually significant. They continue to refer to it as a "sprain".
